I have a mixed force including cavalry. If I siege with towers I can capture the walls but apparently I cannot open the gate from the inside and my foot soldiers are insufficient to capture the town. If I use rams I can only attack thee gate and the ram always gets stopped by fire arrows and apparently rams cannot break walls. Do I have any options other than wait until the town surrenders?

I presume this is M2TW

Once you take the walls, move the soldiers down onto the ground, clearing away any nearby enemies. Once thats done, to triple check, move a unit from inside to outside.

(that works even if the gate isnt yours, and it captures it in the process)

You can either build sap points, or just generally get more infantry. Or, buy artillery.

Finally I let the computer do it and we won. What`s a sap? Is this a tunnel? I have no artilllery as we are waiting for the Chinese to invent gunpowder.:beam:

A sap point is one of the pieces of siege equipment you can build - basically you send an infantry unit into it and they undermine the wall (in complete safety) and it eventually collapses.

They were removed in m2tw, probably because they were almost impossible to defend against.

Thanks. Useful info. When I finally got to Rome there was noone there - probably all away fighting wars. I enslaved the 88 occupants and that was that, Now to Invasio Barbarorum when hopefully the Goths will have taken Rome and there might be a bit of a fight.

In RTW and BI:

- Send infantry up a ladder or seige tower. Find a nice quiet place and a blind spot in the wall towers field of fire
- Once on the wall run the infantry across the top of a gateway. You will get a message 'Building captured'
- Order your cavalry to a point inside the city. The gates should open automatically as your troops approach it.

Here mercenary infantry was hired to do just that. To get on the walls, capture the gates and let the Hun horde into the city.

Apparently, you can; since sap points have a life jauge like rams and towers, they can be destroyed. What it takes to bring them down is another story...

More importantly, if you're playing a barbarian faction, remember that most barbarian infantry units can't sap - with the exception of barbarian peasants.

That explains everything. I have had nasty surprises when besieged with the enemy entering my closed gate. Now I understand and will be able to cope.
Thanks

Andrew

PS In Invasio Barbarorum we are beseiged all the time by the barbarian hordes from the north west and eas and hence we need all the help we can get.
