1) Why do some of my men glow in battle sometimes?

2) How do I make merchants better? My assets keep getting taken

3) How should I maximize my merchant's productivity?

In RTW, your men sometimes glow in battle when they go up a level of experience. Maybe that is what you are experiencing?

On merchants, I suggest you read the stickied forum FAQ and the links referenced to in it on merchants. There are some good tips.

The glowing might also be a result of them carrying torches in sunrise and sunset maps.

The value of Merchants is quite dependant on where you are and the trade resources around you. As the English I found them to be only moderately useful, but as the Moors in merchant heaven (otherwise known as Timbuktu) I had some earning over 800 per turn.
