View Full Version : Walking vs Sailing

OK, so can someone please explain why its quicker to walk on foot (not ride mind you) from Denmark to the holy land versus Sailing a sea going vessel?

Is this just the way it is and chalked up to game mechanics or balance or ???? what?

I know nothing about modding this game, but would it be possible to change how much a ship moves in a year?

Taking over a decade to sail to the holy land is just a bit much

Thanks in Advance

I've tried changing the values in the descr_character file for the movement rate of admirals, but it doesn't seem to work. You could assign ships a trait that increases their movement by 100%, but the moment you put an army onboard it slows to their speed again. The only way to increase ship movement speed is to increase the speed of everything across the board.

Well, if you select the fleet right before the move, it uses the full movement of the fleet.

@ Loki's original question, yes it is for game balance reasons.

Thanks Katank.

So did you two mean to say that you *can* change the movement of the fleets effectively?

Could on of you kind sirs give me a bit more info/detail?

Thanks

try putting a spy on the fleet.

Select the fleet, prese ctl+A and you will have a lot more movement points...

I don't think the spy matters. What matters is selecting the fleet unit cards rather than the fleet icon. This somehow causes the game to consider only the ship's movement (unhampered by its cargo). Use of this means that you can move a lot further than if you do the regular way (esp. with artillery).

@ Loki, I think if you try to select the unit cards like I said combined with dopp's editing would yield the result you are looking for.

The main problem is the water terrain itself... I'm still looking for the strategy map terrain file but I can't find it anywhere.

OK I think I get it... Select the fleet on the map *THEN* SHIFT select the ship icons *in* the fleet?

presumably then when doing that the ships green "movement footprint" will change size? Or do I have to edit a file first?

@Dopp,

Could you give me some more details on what file to edit and how/what to edit in it?

Thanks

Please, verify my post with empirical observation.

Try this.

Set up a fleet of 1 ship
Set up an army of 1 siege unit
Ready a spy

Then try moving the first two by their own.
Then try again moving them after loading the spy and pressing CTRL+A

The extra movement is erratic as there are some areas were it does not work.

I've sent armies with siege equipment from France to the holy land in far less time this way, you should really at least try it...

it would be much quicker and much less dangerous I would ahve thought to walk to the holy land instead of sail from denmark because you have to cross the british channel, sail around the Iberian Peninsula then sail across the mediterranean and then finally land at Jerusalem (you are most likely to lose alot of people sailing this way because to the AI its going in the completely wrong direction and therefore alot of desertions). Marching on a crusade from denmark would mean crossing HRE, Poland (possibly), Hungary, Byzantine Empire and possibly the Turks and finally reaching the egyptian lands.

Try selecting a fleet and note down its movement range. Now select and army. They are almost the same.

yes Dopp you are right and that was my original point.

It should *not* be that way.

PS and historically when the scandinavians did go on crusade they did it by sea. Just an FYI

@ elbasto, I'm away from my M2TW comp right now. I'll check as soon as I get back. For me, I noticed a huge difference between moving the ship loaded with siege normally (by selecting the fleet via the map) and in a different way (by selecting the ship's unit card). I haven't tried it with a spy and have a feeling that your ctrl-a approach yields the same result that selecting the ship's unit card does. I believe that your approach works but can be made simpler.

@ Loki, sea travel should be faster. Also, crusaders shouldn't desert when you go around northern spain simply because you are traveling the wrong way temporarily. They should realize that it's faster in the end.

When I crusade from north Europe, I walk south/southeast untill I hit the coast then hire a merc boat and sail the rest of the way. Works fine, so long as you don't bump into a big ol' Egyptian fleet. Never had significant attrition doing it this way.

From England, I walk to the south coast of France and boat it from there. From Denmark or Poland, I walk down to Greece and hire my boat in the vicinity of Thesselonika.

I mostly do this to avoid walking through Asia Minor which can be a real pain with all those narrow passes etc.

I miss the good old MTW where you could sail across the map in a single turn. You did need a large fleet for that, however.
