For anyone also here in the UK, is www.play.com a good retailer?

Well I'm just wondering because right now they have a sale that seems too good to be true, and I'm just making sure they aren't going to con me or something...

I've been using them for 3-4 years and have never had a problem.

They can afford to be so cheap and offer free postage as they are based in the channel islands which are tax free AFAIK

I seem to recall you can alos orderthrough the US site adn it comes from the same warehouse - so you can get stuff that only has a US release, and at nice cheap US prices.

Could be wrong but it yused to be the case...

Play.com is a quality site. Usually the cheapest prices and order delivery times seem improved over what they used to be. Unlike Amazon you won't get the games the next day or necessarily the day after that, but you seldom have to wait more than 3 days. Though if you're from the Isle of Man, I suppose waiting an extra day or two is normal anyway? I just picked up Dawn of War Anthology for £17.99 from there and I'm pleased. I even uninstalled M2TW to make room for it. Play.com were one of the first operators based in Jersey to become a success. Now loads of other retailers also have a Jersey depot too.

I pre-ordered the Settlers HoK from play.com. The following day Ubisoft (the publisher) released the same game for ten pounds less. Of course I cancelled my order right away. I now always order off the publisher if possible. I would recommend that you do the same.

I've ordered a few games and CDs from Play.com, never had a problem, always comes within 2-3 working days, their price includes delivery and is still usually the cheapest you can find online. I just got MTW2 for £24.99 inc postage. Ordered it on Friday, came on Tuesday (and thats including a 3 day weekend for New Years). Last christmas I got RTW + BI for £25 when BI was just released, a good tenner cheaper than elsewhere for the pair.

Now, if only they had Morrowind for the Xbox in stock.... ~:(

Thats the first time I've ever heard anything positive about ordering from any publisher - its usually a recipe for receiving the game at full price, 7-14 days after the rest of the world get it.

Amazon.co.uk is nearly always cheaper. I recently looked at something like 7 games on both websites. One was a bit cheaper on play. A couple were only a few pounds more expensive than amazon. Some were double the price amazon were charging. One game Play didn't have in stock and wouldn't be getting back in, but amazon had it ready to go. It's the same each time I check both sites. I've never actually ordered from Play becasue of this.

Mount Suribachi, amazon have it. Regular is them and third party (third party is 1/3 of the price! £8.45, and special edition is third party sellers only. If it's any help I've ordered a lot of stuff from the third party markept place sellers and not had any trouble. Whereas I don't trust the likes of ebay.

Before anyone asks, no, I don't get commision. More's the pity. Been using them for five years now; without them I'd have been able to afford less than half the games I have, and been able to get one fifth of the books I own.

I usually buy from Amazon.co.uk right now. I would only consider buying from Play.com if it's cheaper. I just signed up and I intend to order a copy of Civ IV Warlords in order to take advantage of the January sale they have right now which makes Warlords an amazing £9.99.

No actually from Amazon I usually recieve orders nearer the lower limits allocated for them to arrive.

I seldom ever see any games cheaper on Amazon. Not when you add an extra £2-3 for postage and VAT anyway. Typically all new PC releases are a couple of quid cheaper than elsewhere at Play.com. Amazon are good if you want something fast or you're buying a few things at once though. The 'recommended for you' feature is nice too.

Thanks for that Froggy - I've always been a bit wary of the 3rd party thing.

And I need a decent Xbox game now my wife uses the PC every evening (works from home).

:inquisitive: Postage is free if you spend over £15 (not hard) and VAT is included in the price - there's no VAT free price listed on the items pages, only when you get to the checkout and look at the breakdown of your bill.

I never pay for postage when ordering from amazon itself; whatever the supersaver delivery claims, I still get my items within two working days, and very often the day after dispatch. Free postage isn't an option when ordering from market place sellers, but still I usually manage to get the game cheaper once it's included. If Play were cheaper I'd use Play; I don't like burning money. But it's not when I check.

Huh, if you want bad try the Game website. Expensive. Doesn't have much in stock, comparatively speaking and for a web-shop.

Oddly the HMV site is pretty good too. Makes the retail shops look disorganised, messy, expensive, and badly stocked.
