This is my first post in a RTW forum, so please be kind to this MTW old boy.

I have RTW 1.5 Gold edition and have just started a Julli Campaign on H/H (my first). Things are going well enough with gains against the gauls. The thing is I'd like to wrap up the gauls quickly with some bribes, but I don't seem to be having much luck. I have read a quick guide on bribes, but even gift offers get rejected, when I try to soften them up before the main bribe.

Can anyone offer some pointers on how to best use bribes?

bribes aren't cheap in v1.5 so if ya don't have enough money in your hold the AI will simply refuse....

I don´t believe that giving gifts to a faction does increase your chances to bribe an army, city or diplomat of that faction. A gift is an official handout, it improves your diplomatic relation with the faction in question (at least it´s supposed to - it´s hard to say) while a bribe is unofficial, offered only to the leader in charge of the respective unit ("unit" meaning strategic entity, that includes cities and diplomats). As a matter of fact, I think if you sucessfully bribe the army of another nation (something which will happen rarely, since it´s really expensive) and you were neutral to that faction, you will immediately go to war with them (or was that MTW I?)

I remember as Julii on m/m a year ago we bribed some German Spear warbands. They were harder to combat than the Gaul troops.

Small stacks of enemy are cheaper to bribe.

The most expensive army to bribe for me, costed around 50k if I remember correctly - Greek army, couple of Spartans and mostly Hoplites -, so, if you have that much money to spare, you can go around bribing them ~;)

Bribing did not result in war in R:TW 1.0, but this was changed in the 1.2 patch. R:TW 1.2 also made bribing much more expensive. I believe that the cost of bribing is partially related to the size of your treasury: the more money you have, the more expensive bribing becomes. However, this doesn't mean that bribing is free or almost free when you are poor, so the option of bribing doesn't appear if you don't have enough cash.

So am I right in thinking that you will always get a negative response to bribes if your bank balance is well below, what it would take to get that army just interested in the idea. I was getting so little interest in bribes I thought I was going about them wrong.

If you dont have enough you get a negative response.

Think it last cost me some €1500 to bribe an enemy diplomat, €14,000 an enemy family member (RTW V1.5)

If you have enough you will have the choice to proceed or not once you are told the 'price'.

Try it on a diplomat to make sure you have the process right. I wouldnt recommend it as a habit...its an expensive way to gain diplomats.

The only one ive ever been able to bribe cost me 62K denarii (My diplomat had 1 influence the rebel family member had 4) and he had 20% less than he should have to bribe due to a trait.

Im fairly lucky this play through and got it back within 5 years :)




Do you know how placement effects bribe prices? as I have noticed captains are harder to bribe the nearer they are to thier factions settlements or to a lesser extent another of thier factions armies.

I was just wondering if this is due to randomness or if it is actually a programed erm, function.

Only 14,000 denarii. The cheapest I ever got a family member in R:TW was for 120,000 denarii, and he was only in charge of a small army and had several traits which made him easy to bribe. However at that time my treasury was over 1,000,000 so I presume that that had something to do with it.

I used to bribe full stacks of Greeks for the max of 90k! That is, in my Scipii Campaign RTW 1.5. (AFAIR.. And my treasury would be 110k, yeah I don't care, it will come back soon enough ~;) )
