I downloaded EB today and the icon that came up looked like a website window. When I click on it, it says I need to insert the correct cd rom and even if i do i still get vannila RTW. I read some of the thing you guys posted prior to installing but still nothing this is my third time and im tired of getting it wrong, error messages, bugs( one that prevented me from playing the first time), wierd twist of fate, or any other cr@p I get. im starting to think that its impossible to do this. I wouldnt have posted this if it was not important but this has been going on for months! if anybody helps it would be GREATLY appreciated. I know you guys are tired of help me questions but i cant get this thing to work. please! any help!

Probably annoying, but: could you be a little more specific?
Currently you leave me utterly ~ .
Correct me if I'm wrong:
you got a clean RTW install, patched to 1.5, downloaded EB 0.8, installed EB 0.8 in your RTW directory, and it went more or less bonkers?
What download link did you use, btw?

RTW directory? i did every thing but that, also i tried installing it before this time(current install) but i pressed cancel when (i think) the files were extracting and i was unable to uninstall that so maybe that was corrupted. anyways does that have to do with this? corrupted files from another install? and the icon has not changed to a EB icon and when i clicked on proporties for that EB file it said there is no short cut key thats the info i have right now, i used the down load link EB FTP. but installing it to the EB directory i dont think so, all i followed everything up to downloading EB on what you said. and THANK YOU not much people care about install issues
Hello and welcome to the Org K COSSACK ~
ALBM's big short simple guide on how to install EB with no problems.
Uninstall your current installation of R:TW.
Re-install R:TW.
(If you have Gold do not do this step, skip to step five) Download the 1.3 patch for R:TW from here (http://www.sega.com/support/pcdownloads/rometotalwar_patch/English/rome_totalwar_patch_1-3.zip) and follow the instructions in the readme. If you have problems with this just ask.
(If you have Gold do not do this step, go to step five) Download the 1.5 patch for R:TW from here (http://www.sega.com/support/pcdownloads/rometotalwar_patch/v1.5/English/rome_total_war_patch_1-5.zip). Again follow the instruction in the readme and if you need any help ask here.
Download EB from here (https://www.europabarbarorum.com/ccount11/click.php?id=1).
Install EB and follow the instructions until it askes you where you want to install EB.
(If you don't have Gold skip this step) If you have Gold change it to C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome: Total War
Let the installer do it's magic.
Play EB from the shortcut on the desktop. Whatever you do do not delete it. It is the only possible way of accessing EB.
Keep the EB installer somewhere safe on your hard drive. You will need it if you delete your shortcut.ALBM's short simple guide on how to access EB if you have deleted the shortcut on your desktop.
Right click on your desktop, left click on new and then click on shortcut.
(If you have Gold skip to step four) When it says "type the location of the item" type in "C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\RomeTW.exe" -mod:eb -nm -show_err" (without the punctuation marks).
(If you do not have Gold got skip to step four) When it says "type the location of the item" type in "C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\RomeTW.exe" -mod:eb -nm -show_err" (without the punctuation marks).
Play EB using the shortcut on the desktop.
This does not work if you have pointed your R:TW to a different directory on installation.
Good luck playing EB,
Avlvs

Avlvs, your short simple shortcut guide doesn't work when one has not installed RTW in the C\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome: Total War folder...

Thanks glad to be here and be a fellow EB member! some more info, I do not have gold, I have patch 1.3 and 1.5 but not 1.2, and... C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome: Total War.. I simply do not know how to do this, actually Ive never succesfully downloaded a mod in my life. Maybe I will have better luck this time.
Maybe you could tell me where the C:\program files\ is or what it is:inquisitive: . I have only accessed RTW but not played it yet, and have the patches installed(1.3 and 1.5 but no 1.2 becuase I don't have it) but I will uninstall anyways and I guess i'll have to download EB AGAIN...

*Never mind the exact paths.*
As long as:
you have a clean (that is unmodded) version of RTW, patched to 1.5 somewhere on your harddrive;
and you can still find it;
and you have EB 0.8 downloaded;
and you have installed it properly (that is, following the installer instructions & don't cancel it... never).
You should then be able to play EB... :balloon3:
So if anything went wrong, check the list to see if you might have forgotten something. Also, if you get any weird/ unexpected errors, be sure to read the FAQ...

alright I just hope I get it this time, also I still have the same vanilla RTW there and only accessed it once. I hope that doesnt affect the EB install. I havent even played it though I did click on the prologue and imperial campaign.
Though that C:\program files\ thing has me worried, I never used or did something like that before... Oh! I found out that my game points to \ACTIVISION\ instead of CREATIVE ASSEMBLY the rest is the same
C:\program files\ is the directory where your OS normally puts everything. You /are/ running windows, arent you?
If you want to find it, simply double click on the 'my computer' icon on your desktop, in which you should find icons for your hard drives, cd drives, etc, etc. 'C' is usually the main hard drive. It is the one windows was installed onto. It usually has a name like Local Disc or something. The (C:) will be in brackets after the name.
'Program Files' should be a folder in there when you open it. Normally you have to click 'show files' to make them visible, as windows tries to prevent people who dont know what they are doing from tinkering...
C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome: Total War is like an address. If you follow the string along, you will find what you are looking for.
You might have 'Activision' instead of 'The Creative Assembly'. I do. I think it depends when you bought your Rome discs. So the shortcut may look like C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome: Total War

.......I tried again... I even switched \activision\ to \creative assembly\(this time I got an EB icon but when I clicked on it it said missing shortcut). But still it seems someone really doesnt want me to play this game. you know maybe I should just give up(i am a quitter) and just stick around and watch screen shots of EB. I could still play as the julli in vanilla (for the 15 time) and I should just forget about ever trying again since i'll only get my hopes up and dashed. Everytime I do this I end up with dissapointment. So i'll just stick around the forums and read what everybody has to say knowing I cant give help because I have any EB experiance. so thank you

Pity...
Perhaps if you posted all steps you took, one by one, someone, peraps even me, could help you out...?
If you don't know where to start:
I understand that you do have Vanilla RTW patched to 1.5, and are now sick and tired of having to point an installer to it over and over again?
I also understand that you downloaded EB 0.8, without any trouble (perhaps your download was interupted, perhaps you used a link which is not officially supported... describe it all. My download is 363.065 kb in size, thus, should a quick check on your part lead to a different size...> probably corrupted/wrong download link.)
I got it that you hadn't any trouble at all during the EB installation process (you double clicked the installer, ran it, and didn't do anything but specify what your Vanilla RTW 1.5 folder actually was, it did it's work and gave the sweet 'installation succes' message)?
I got it also that the installer made a shortcut on your desktop, which has the correct path (adress) and the -mod switch in the target line?
Perhaps, if you posted some screenshot's of the screen that pops up when you run the shortcut? (If you don't know how to make such a screenshot: press the 'Prnt Scrn' key and open some picture editing programme, (photo editor, paint, whatever), and 'paste'...) Always do this when you get an error report, it allows you 'acces' to the error later on.

Right, right... I pressed print screen but i dont know if anything happened... and um.. I deleted paint but ican describe alot of what happened (from hours of trying) i'll work on that and does adobe work? now to what happened.
the EB icon (decietly named 0.8 and not dissapointment and sorrow) was there, I put the cd in and clicked on the icon( also the RTW vanilla icon was their too but didnt click on it) that square RTW vanilla screen poped up I did not click on that only the EB icon. so the screen showed those logos and that RTW trailer. Then a greek phalanx picture was in the background while it loaded. the phalanx picture was still there (I entered several times and it would switch to the battle thing) I clicked on prologue, imperial campaign, just about everything. when I clicked on the options it said it was ver. 1.5 and thats when the tantrum I had was at its peak.
In short, everything was vanilla. The load, background, screen, EVERYTHING . Its as if I never installed it.
EDIT: yes it gave the install success.
What is the EB screen supposed to look like? I almost had it one time before 0.8 came out and almost made it if it wasnt for a load bug.
Tellos Athenaios
01-08-2007, 22:34
Perhaps, dunno, but it's always worth testing: if you tried to run EB after you have closed the Vanilla thing you mentioned? So, put the cd disc in the drive, wait till it pops up, close it, and then double click the EB shortcut on your desktop.
Boyar Son
01-08-2007, 22:45
Ok, i'll do that. And also I think this is more than mere download problems. It is impossible to think that my computer (dell) refuses to run EB. I must be getting closer to it since I finnaly got the EB icon instead of some window icon. Did I mention I the last time I installed EB I did not reinstall the RTW game? still fresh though. I only clicked into menu's and imperial campaign.
EDIT: I tried what you said Tellos and it did not work... what if I reinstalled it? I saw one time when I pressed save instead of run when I downloaded this I saw an EB install thing. maybe that would work or reinstall both EB and RTW....and I tried to access EB through start and it said
"problem with shortcut" furthermore"the item 'RomeTW.exe' that this shortcut refers to has changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly.
"nearest match based on size, date, and type: C:\program files\ the creative assembly\Rome...\ RomeTW.exe"
then it just told me if I want to fix it so it point to this target or just delet it and I already tried the fix it option.

I wonder if EB team can fix so the patch 0.81 works like when I installed 0.74?? Becouse I also had some problems before I could play 0.80. Becouse the patch for 0.74 was much more newbie friendly, that one was only to open and play lol. Thanks

Also, that repair thing that shows along with remove and install, it says it fixes shortcuts and I think I narrowed the problem down to that (shortcut). I ran that and it still hasn't fixed my problem.
do any of you guys out there know how to fix shortcuts?
the computer says there is a missing shortcut when clearly I downloaded it and the icon is there.

Ah, this may very well explain everything: you need to save the download first; and then run it. If you try otherwise, you're merely trying to run something that doesn't exist (yet).
So: save your download, when it's done, run your download by double clicking it (a box will pop up) and confirm that you're going to run it, follow the instructions you're given by the installer... And perhaps, who knows (most likely), you will be able to play EB... :balloon3:
Boyar Son
01-09-2007, 00:42
Um, run it? I saved it but to get that running thing i would need to install it all over again (just to get the RUN button). Unless there was another way to get there i.e somewhere in the start menu? I need help on that.
I clicked on the icon again STILL it says missing shortcut...and by EB install I'm correcting myself, it says EB setup
EDIT: nevermind l I think I know where your getting at. And why do I get a modify, repair, or remove option? doesn't that mean I already have it installed? Btw I think I have a solution uninstall, reinstall, press RUN instead of save and wait till it installs!

Yeah I understand now. I think I know where my mistake was. I'll wait till the weekend to install again, I already uninstaled EB and rome TW, so I'll be sure to correct myself and play.
and I think that people should be stongly recommended to press RUN instead of SAVE. Or else you won't know what to do.
THANKS TELLOS!:2thumbsup:

Uh dude.. seriously.. have you never saved a program from the internet before? Heres what you do bud. Save the file to your desktop. once it gets to your desktop hit double click it to unpack the program and install EB into your RTW directory.
Boyar Son
01-11-2007, 22:18
Sorry ZAKNAFIAN but...nope. Every time I try I always fail. Really this is sort of my first time(not counting the other failed times, lets say generaly). I almost had EB once if it were not for a load bug before 0.80, and that was theonly time I even saw the load screen, so I have never played this.
I did the steps over and over, unpacking the program several different ways
(like going to start) but still nothing. I cant understand why my computer refuses to let me play.

Why don't you make a bunch of screenshots (download box, several pictures of the installation process...) and upload them using this link (https://imageshack.us/)? Use the first tumbnail code for forums, when you upload you'll find out what I mean, because that's just a line in the 'form', after you hosted you picture, and perhaps those pictures can explain what you may have been impossible to explain.
Oh, and on a side note: did you happen to leave your PC during download, because you thought "he's doing fine without me, he'll be busy for quite a while, so let's do something else somewhere else", or anything like it? Because if you did, your PC may have shut down your Internet connections: WINDOWS considers it to be nice to you & safe for your PC to switch to stand by mode in case of a prolonged inactivity of the user, and to do that, it shuts down internet connections and such... Such a thing may have resulted in a series of incompleted downloads, which may in turn explain why time after time EB didn't work: it would not have been fully installed (as part of the files would have been missing).

I read what you said but it was too late...
Now how do I take pictures? I'm very new to this. Also how do you upload on to that link?
The screen saver poped up once or twice when ever I dowload this so your saying thats the problem? and I still did not do a good job of explaing... well then I guess its on to pictures.:help:
What browser are you using? maybe if you use a browser with a good download manager it will be easier.

If you had to log on after the screensaver, then yes: that would have *screwed* it up.
To take sceenshots: press the PrntScrn key, and paste it in some picture editing program, save it in .jpg file format. Then upload using imageshack (https://imageshack.us/) & tumbnailcode... and we, the readers, will be able to *see* what the probem actually is.

I'm going to have many heart attacks in my life, I just know it...
First: Please reduce your use of smilies. They do not help getting the message across when overdone.
Second: This problem is certainly not something you should go to a professional for. Some of this (downloading stuff from the net and using it, I mean) is basic computer knowledge that you WILL need again later, so keep trying.
Finally, to actually try to help :beam:. I suggest getting Firefox from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/download.html?product=firefox-2.0.0.1&os=win&lang=en-US and install that first. I think you can safely use "Run" rather than "Save" at this point. It's a browser rather than a download manager, however it still is able to restart a download if it botches (sometimes at least). It's also easy to see how far along the file transfer is so you don't try to run it before it's complete.
When you download the EB installer in Firefox, there will likely not be an option for running directly, but when you choose to save it will automatically store the file to your desktop (unless you tell it otherwise). The desktop is the screen with all the icons when you have closed or minimized all your windows, where you start when you turn on the computer.
Now comes the tricky part: At some point you need to tell the installer where you have installed Rome Total War. You may be confused as the installer instead asks you where you want to install EB, but this MUST be the same place as RTW is or it will not work. While this follows the pattern C:\some\folder\RomeSomething, it can be pretty much anything, so you'll need to use a trick to find out just what it is: You need to find the shortcut for Rome Total War, but do not run it. Right-click it and choose properties. You should get a window with a couple of information fields, you are currently interested in the field called "Start in". Select the content of this and copy it to the clipboard by pressing Ctrl-C.
Now you have where RTW (which must be clean and patched to version 1.5, as stated in a post here earlier) is installed, so run the installer from the Firefox downloads window or your desktop, either should work. Click next, delete what it says in the Folder textbox, then paste from the clipboard by pressing Ctrl-V. Click next and install. Finally, once it's done, use the EB shortcut to run the game.
Righto, good luck :sweatdrop:! If you need more help, be very precise telling us what you are doing, preferably step by tiny step, so we can best help you figure out where you are doing wrong.

Ok I'll follow those steps but by proffesional I meant there was a problem on the computer. It wont let me play or uninstall, that is why I need to go somewhere to fix that. Its very annoying to try and install something only to find out theres a problem...
Also those werent smilies, some were angries, some were jugglers, and some were skulls (sorry couldnt resist, please dont stop helping me!)
guess I'll have to wait a while longer... and is firefox a safe product you can trust?
and Zaknafian your from Bartix...
Firefox is used by millions of people, it won't damage anything.
So... HOW does it fail when you start vanilla or try to uninstall? Any error messages? I assume the reason you are trying to uninstall is in order to get a clean install again?

01-15-2007, 02:58
Dude. first of all, you unable to uninstall sounds like the registry issue. you should run winreg and delete the CA keys in the registry, then use add/remove programs to remove RTW completely. Install a fresh version of RTW, patch to 1.5, then run the EB .08 installer program into the RTW directory on your computer.
Boyar Son
01-15-2007, 18:23
Alright I'll try that, and I tried to run "winreg" but my computer says that it refers to a location that is unavailable.

5. Point it to "C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome -Total War\"
(Most likely Gold/Eras install location.)
We can't know exactly where you should install, "C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome -Total War\" is only the most likely place. You'll have to use my instructions to find out for certain (that is, use the RTW shortcut to see).
MarcusAureliusAntoninus
01-17-2007, 09:49
True, but having said, "creative assembly", I assumed that is the one he had.
The other option is "C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome -Total War\". These are the different default targets for RTW (depending on your edition):
C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome -Total War\
C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome -Total War\
C:\Program Files\SEGA\Rome -Total War\ (?)
You may have a different drive letter or may have manually directed to a different target (which you would know then). If you have an ancient version of Windows, it may send it somewhere screwy as well.
Boyar Son
01-17-2007, 23:19
Right, and just so you know, I have windows XP. I have a newer CD( the other older one messed up) this one has SEGA (tm) on it, so I'm pretty sure this is new since creative assembly switched to them.
Any other hints or suggestions?
1. Install RTW
2. install patch1.3

IF you have installed your latest RTW in the default directory, then, that's most likely something called: ...\SEGA\....\Rome Total War

Um, well the "latest" update is seen under my signature, just click the title and it should take you there. I have not updated in a couple weeks because ive been busy doing some things for the Romani for 8.x, and have been busy with work. I plan to restart my game when 8.x is released publicly.

SEGA huh...Ok, I really thought I got when I put creative assembly. This time I'll put that. but I'm also going to try BOVI's tip.
Any other hints or suggestions? :help:

Go to "My Computer" (probably on the desktop and in the Windows Start menu). Double click on your main drive (probably C:). Double click on the file "Program Files", look for the folder(s) "Activision", "The Creative Assembly", and/or "SEGA". If you find these, double click on them, if they contain the folder "Rome - Total War" double click on that. If it contains the folder "data" and the application "RomeTW.exe" (as well as a bunch of other stuff) you have found the install location.

Any other hints or suggestions?
1. Install RTW
2. install patch1.3
3. Install patch 1.5(both I got from TW command)
4. run EB (like i said, i thought i uninstalled it but it showed up in my documents.
5. point installer to SEGA (capitalized? exact?)
6. let the installer do its thing
7. play EB
So I'm thinking this time I'm gonna put SEGA. It just makes sense since creative assembly and Activision did not work. Need some luck! And I'm gonna do what Marcus said.

 I tried to install RTW and when it said where I wanted to install it, had the usual and I noticed " the creative assembly". I erased that and put in cap SEGA. Then, when I put the 2nd disc in, the computer said its not responding. A whole bunch of mishaps later and a restart and I cant play (exactly like the last time) and I tried regedit and traced where I put it but still it wont let me install or play. SIGH, SHRUG...... some people just have it so easy.....:skull:
I guess I'll have to wait later till I fix this problem.:skull:

um, thats because you have to direct each cd to instal to the correct directory. if you changed one to SEGA, they would all have to be SEGA. if yours wants to instal to CA, let it.

The key is to install RTW and EB to the exact same folder. When installing RTW, not where it goes (it matters not where) and type that exact thing into the EB installer.
I think he might be a troll. He's had solutions offered to him, which if followed to the letter would make it work. Not just mine, several would work. Still he persists in asking for more advice, without performing the instructions he's been given.
My last contribution on this thread is this: As Marcus last said and which has been said a lot of times before, don't be hung up on an exact value that should be at point 5 in your list. This simply isn't a constant value, it varies according to where you or the installer decides to install RTW. Marcus and I have both given you valid ways to determine what this value should be. Now try them. Mine won't require a reinstall of RTW, but may be (slightly) more technically difficult than Marcus'.

yeah, ive thought he was a troll too. he obviously speaks english so theres no reason he would have this much difficulty, unless he's like 7 years old.

Oh ok...insult me then, but I thought you guys were really trying to help me out. Now I have to deal with not playing and Bovi and Zaknafian insulting me? jumping to conclusions huh? well then dont help me then, ask someone to lock this thread... and in fact insult every new member that joins. Zaknafian your're just bieng a jerk ( and it's spelled "install" Zak) and Bovi too. I am not a troll, and have never sucessfully downloaded anything so this is difficult for me. you guys don't want to help anymore fine, actin like you havent even gotten to puberty...
I did not insult you, however if you want to take it that way I can understand why. You do have a bigger share of problems with this than most, and that can easily get you on the defensive. I don't mind if you do feel insulted however, as you return the favour in an unmistakably trollish manner. Why didn't you prove you are not a troll by disproving the arguments why I think you are, rather than confirming them with flame?
As far as I can see, the reason why you'd have so much trouble is either that you are completely computer-illiterate, or good old-fashioned stupid. I find both unlikely because you could successfully navigate the registry and make the uninstaller work, even without detailed instructions (something my smart AND semi-computer-literate friend was not able to do). So why would you be unable to follow simple, detailed instructions on installing?
EB members are VERY polite compared to any other forum I've ever been in. And we welcome new members. We've tried to help you. A lot. You do not follow our advice. Note that I even gave you a final piece of advice in my last post even as I decided you were likely a troll. Why don't you use it? It's not hard. It's straightforward. I can see no other reason for your continued whining (<== you may want to make a note of this. This is an actual insult, by deliberately using a negatively loaded word describing your actions without arguments or examples of why I think so) than that you want to keep wasting our time.
If you do exactly as laid out in my instructions, EB will work for you. If you do exactly as Zak says, EB will work for you. If you do exactly as Marcus says, EB will work for you. There is no more help to give when you are unwilling to follow detailed instructions. If said instructions are not detailed enough, say what you've done, step by tiny step, so we can say where you're going wrong. Help us help you.

:dizzy2: Point taken everyone?
Okay, let's move on then, shall we? :inquisitive:
@ K_COSSACK: Perhaps you feel like giving it another try:
If you still have a clean RTW 1.5 (one that works, you might as well check this because of all your installation efforts, something might have been messed up...), find out where it is on your Harddrive - pick a piece of paper & a pen and write the precise name of the RTW directory down.
Now, use your EB 0.8 download & point the installer to the RTW directory, you might want to use your piece of paper by now...
Try it... It should work. (but I feel that I'm not to guarantee you, for I've done so a couple of times before and... well you know exactly what I mean.)
If you don't have a clean RTW build: get it.
You might have to uninstall RTW using the add/remove programs feature of your control panel (you can acces it via the start menu, search it for the control panel, and you'll be on your way.)
Then install RTW to whatever the default directory is (saves you the trouble...), but before you press continue: paper & pen + writing down the precise path that has been prespecified according to the Installer.
Let the installer do it's job; patch RTW to 1.3; then patch it to 1.5; then install EB 0.8 using the paper again.
You might even come to consider it a piece of cake... provided that you'll be enjoying EB afterwards. ~;)
Smiley tour today, but you kinda had guessed already.

Ok ok... I came of the way I did because of going through so many install problems, then out of nowhere I get some insult to injury. Like i said if you don't want to post, its ok, I'll just go through the process of trial and error.
Just please don't accuse me of bieng a troll(and don't jump to conclusions about others or it'll just show that you're quick to start a war, not a insult just a recommended suggestion)
really, I've had too much cr@p thrown my way because of this frustration only too find out other people think my problem is fake.
I'll just look back at this forum and use the tips.

That was a response, u got there before me.
I tried to post something even remotely funny to ease the tension, but I can't think of anything. I, being computer-illiterate (and good old-fashioned stupid), sometimes run into problems that seem to be created by the Random-Problem-Generator TM that have no logic. Thank god my brother knows these things and usually fixes them with little cursing and kicking.
K COSSACK, you have my deepest symphaties. You'd have my help too, if I had any.

Thanks Thaatu, but when I installed and it froze with error, I delleted everything except for 3 files which where like, impossible to take out (at least to my knowledge) so I my RTW game is screwed, so I don't know... guess I can't play EB. And unless they sell it for 9.99 I'm not buying another copy. I'll just hang around the forums, so I think this is the end of this thread. Thanks for the help everyone.
Thaatu, the tension is gone, Cossack did what I should have done and just let it go.
Anyway, this is a new problem. Those three files are likely locked by Windows if the installer froze up. Try to restart the computer and then delete them. If it doesn't help, you could try running scandisk and see if it can clear it up. Is it the RTW installer or the EB installer that hangs? Both have run okay earlier, right? A tip is to make a copy of your RTW folder once it's patched up to 1.5 so you won't have to install that part over and over. But if you haven't got that far, obviously it won't work.

Ok! I'll try scandisk, and so you know, it was the RTW that froze when I put in the 1st disk.
Also getting another would fix the problem? or would it also think the game is already installed?
And I'm trying to find them but it just so happened when I took another look, they're gone! I'll keep looking.
And really I'm not making this up (for everyone that doubts the number of problems I have) the installer did go:skull:
EDIT:I have chkdsk but I don't know how to run it...
