View Full Version : Videos (not replays)
I did notice that "videos at youtube thread" but I would like to bring a little more sophistication to the game. That is, not just plain replays, but stuff that is edited and so on.I am right now having a work in progress that hopefully vill end up on about 10 minutes and a cheesy plot in it. And on paper I have a longer one.
But just to kick start the thread and all videomakers/producers out there I did something extreme short to se how it looks when I render it and to try out some transitions (not so good that is) that you kan download @ http://www.dxl.gameclan.nu/rome/goof.rar (it´s in a rar archive)
So let this thread be open and I will be glad to answer your questions if you can answer mine.
Cos there got to be more "editing" geeks out there.... right? ~;p
If you need a ftp to put it on when its done let me now, (I have loooaaads of server space).

MOST IMPRESSIVE!
Especially the scene in the beginning where there is a flyby while greek is heard on the horizon...
:2thumbsup:
I recommend that you download this!
~;)
Thanks, gota say I feel a bit embarresed since that video to my standards are a bit crappy...
But if you like that one you will love it when learn to controll the ingame camera a bit better and render it in a better way... In other words when I make it so I think it is good.
And by the way, anyone know if there is a way to loose the counter in the top right corner in the replays? And while we are at it loose the controlls that in my vid is in the bottom right, it is not so much a nuicanse now but I am sure it will be some day.

DXL: Jag laddade ner din fil för att titta på men hör bara musiken. Jag undrar vad jag gör fel? Måste man ha något specielt program för att se filmen?
Tar det på engelska ifall någon annan har samma problem
If it don´t work:
The video is renderd for DIVX 6 or later.
You can try out http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ that program can shorten down videos though.
If you using DIVX anyways and it dont work let me know and I look in to it.

Flyby? All I get when I open it is the audio, there is no visual when it plays.

You probably need to download a codec.

Media Coder is a cool unintrusive free program that plays most video types (but i'm sure there are many others out there that do the same thing).
Oh and DXL... thats a really cool movie. As an amateur editor myself (though i haven't made any movies in ages) i take my hat off to you. Can't wait to see more of your work :2thumbsup:.
2 DXL:
I haven't seen your video yet.Do you use RTW movie_cam command to make your videos? It has some cool features, that could help to make great movies.

Nop. That is for me a dream, a rumor, a tale. I would love to get some info on that. I remember reading somewhere about something that the devs used to do the intros for historical battles and so on, but never found it. So if you have any info I would be your slave for a whole day. :smash:
edit
ok I have now found som info about it... made a few searches and it turned out to a tricky one to find but not impossible. I am going to see if I can make it work now. Let you all know if I get in to trouble..
edit2
Let us just say I do not have to be the slave of Barigos :)
Things happen fast when you have the fear in your body...
Thank you very very much for this..
Ok.I hope you will impress us with something really cool.Have you read this great tutorial:
http://www.freewebtown.com/creepfilms/RTM_Doc06.html ?
BTW,It says about 1.2 patch necessary, but we all know it also works with later versions of RTW.
Couls someone suggest some good software to edit videos too? I would like to make one too, but I don't have a clue about this stuff :sweatdrop:
The short version:
The software you nedd are: (that I use)
FRAPS and Sony vegas for editing
http://www.fraps.com/
and a free trial of vegas is here http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/products/vegasfamily.asp
In case you missed the great page Barigos linked to that page is here
http://www.freewebtown.com/creepfilms/RTM_Doc06.html
you can use the ingame stuff to but I think it is just clumsy, using fraps is much smother, be warned though a few minutes of recording and the clips pass the GB limit.
If there is intrest I may write a noob guide to this stuff. Just gonna finnish my "spartan" video and I can write the guide at work :laugh4:
also make sure you have latest codecs to divx
Thanks..i am looking forward to your Spartan video, the first one was great.:2thumbsup:

Why not someone with the knowledge and creativity does an awesome intro video for EB?:idea2:
I hope we can see an intro video soon. Maybe for 0.9 or 1.0
Thanks =)

Here is one I did

ywingpilot: That was real nice. good work. What are you using to edit with?
Is it the ingamemusic that you use? If not what is it?
good to know I am not alone in this, I have had loads of stuff at work, but this really inspired me to go on.

We have none currently for the mod itself, btw. If people have "mad skills" in this area, and are interested, we'd like to have short faction intro videos. Just something to keep in mind.
I am intrested indeed. Besides playing EB, Company of Heroes and doing all the boring stuff that come wit a real world life, editing EB vids is all I do with my computer at the moment....
How long do you want the videos to be and is there any big nonos or gotabein when it comes to music?
edit:
just upploaded a video www.dxl.gameclan.nu/rome/untitled.rar
it is just some tryingout stuff, I think it is kinda cool that it is just one long take, didnt cut or ad any other scenes. I wont say enjoy but download and say what you think about the how the camera moves if you wanna help me :)

Using the EB music would be pretty much required I think. We don't want to get in trouble using music from other, non approved, sources. All the mp3's are in our game files though, and there are like 26 or so different pieces, so there are a good many to choose from. We will have to have some voice over work for them too I suspect, but I don't know if anything is planned at this point. I also don't know what format they need to be saved in - foot is the man who is in charge of this area (but we've been using him for other stuff lately). The length should be pretty close to the intro videos for vanilla (the famous eagle videos  when you start a campaign), but I don't know how long they are. I'm just the guy who tries to poke people with sticks to get things done - I dunno the specs really on this.
Sounds doable, I got a good mic and a good recordingthingy and a scrambler so the voices can sound cool I give it a try..
DXL who would feel reel cool and put it in is CV if he had a offical EB video out there :2thumbsup:
Cool vid.
A little bit laggy with the framerate, and also slightly pixilated, but I guess thats unavoidable.
Very nice depiction of the chaos of battle when you pan round at knee level through the grass!
One thing though...
...WTF was with the music!?!?!
I think I have momentarily lost my sanity after listening to that on repeat loop for 5 mins... I think TA has the right of it when he suggested using EB music...
I look forward to seeing EB intro vids with voiceovers and the works. That will be amazing!
The vid aint realy ment for public viewing, as I stated before, it was just to try out som camera moves... Thats why the music is there... so people dont take it to serius

I wil try and post something that is edited properly, I don't use grass in any videos because it kills your fps plus the grass is way to high and obscures some of the action. All the music is EB and I a using move maker
If you want my advice, moviemaker sucks (if its windows default moviemaker we talk about) I am suprised you got it so good anyways.
At least try http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/pro...egasfamily.asp
There you can do good stuff fairly easy, and it has much better rendering qualitys and you can do very cool transistions between clips...
friend of mine think you should try http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/
I never used it, but lots of people that has editing for a living use it so it cant be that bad I guess.

If someone is interested in close ups with high detail and good grass, try small unit sizes. For zoomed out battles and such, reduce the detail and grass then (if it gives you trouble).

Hey ywing, for some reason I never saw that carthage video of yours. Spent a while downloading it on my dialup this afternoon and just saw it. I don't know that I ever saw the original one in RTW, but was that voiceover acting from it or did you do that yourself? I guess that was the RTW eastern music. I liked some of the approach, but it was a little too peaceful for my tastes overall. :laugh4: We still are interested in getting some help in this area - we don't have anyone making them at this point. We'd prefer our music in them also if at all possible. Anyone who has some skill at this, feel free to offer up your services.
Yeah that was the vanilla Carthage voiceover. *shudder*
I'm sure Hannibal sounded JUST like that...

@ Ywingpilot, personally I loved it. As Teleklos said, however, we could do with something bloodier. Do you feel like doing anything in that general direction?
