Hi all, I just wanted you to know I'm starting research on a book I am going to write based on the Narva front in northern Russia and Estonia. It may take a while as I am tapping into some Russian government files (a friend works there) and I have veterans from the German side to talk to as well as very many large libraries. Many private photo collectors are offering support if they find any pictures from that base of operations.

Right now I have lots of information from articles and books written down. I'm going to first spend a long while getting completely familiar with both sides of this battle as well as prebattle and postbattle stats. I have talked to a couple of people (some from Estonia) who are willing to help me out. Some have some pictures that they are going to get up for me.

You all can help by advertising my effort on this book. Also keep your ears open if you find any vets (German or Russian) from this battle. These are SOME of the German divisions/regiments/corps involved:

-Großdeutschland
-III Germanic SS Panzer Korps
-9th and 10th Luftwaffe-feld divisions
-502.Schwere Panzer Abteilung
-Estonian 20. W-SS Grenadier division
-61.Infanterie-Division
-Panzer Grenadier Division "Feldharrnhalle"
-Nordland 26.SS Panzer Grenadier regiment
-49.SS Freiwilligen Panzer grenadier regiment "der Ruyfer"
-48.SS Freiwilligen Pazner grenadier regiment "General Seyffardt"
-"Danmark" regiment of Nordland
-"Hermann von Salza Panzer Abt."

Thanks for your interest! :2thumbsup:

I hate to ressurect this thread but I just want to offer my verbal(or vitural as it may be) support for your work. While I am in no way a professional, I do consider myself a young history enthusiast and hope you have the best of luck in writing your book. And on the very off chance I meet a vet from that front I'll send you a PM. :smiley2:

Russian government files? Is there any way I can access the older ones from the earlier part of the Soviet regime/later part of the Empire over the Internet? Things such as records of individual soldiers in the Red Army and the Imperial Army?

I doubt you'll get those files. Why you ask?

because Alexanderofmacedon probaly had a hard time getting those files (More Modern) imagine getting files which dated to times that the RUssian Government killed if someone knew those secreats!

But people have accessed these documents. Biographers, directors (for documenteries), authors, and the like. I doubt these files are on the Internet, but the older ones must surely be declassified. The Imperial files, at least, if they weren't destroyed by the Soviets.

I know that the soviets were letting western historians into there records for World War II. Now that the SU collasped it should be even more open.

Hey Alexanderofmacedon, are you writing about the battle for the Bridgehead, or Tannenbergstellung? I got these form Wiki(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Narva_%281944%29) while looking up what you were writing about. I have read about this battle here and there catching little snipits of it and it kind of reminds me of the battles of the Kurland Pocket which some of these forces would later participate in with nearly the same characteristics. Good luck with it and hope all goes well.

P.S. Have you written any other books before this one?

My book is based around the retreat from Leningrad, the breakout from Oranienbaum and the main part; the fighting in and around Narva.

I have not written a book yet. This one is coming along quite nicely though.
