View Full Version : Help Needed - Getai Concept Art
Hi everyone!
I'm the Getai faction coordinator, and we're lining things up right now to make skins for the lesser general and several other factional and regional units. However, the text description from the historians can be difficult for the skinners to translate into units. A middle step can be very helpful.
That middle step is concept art, simple sketches and the like. Now, I can make bad concept sketches on my own if necessary, but it'd make me really happy and probably speed things up if there was someone out there with some art talent who'd be willing to work with me in drawing up some nice concept art. Plus you'd get to take an early look at some new units.
If you're interested, post here or PM me.

Argh my complete and utter lack of all drawing skills comes back to haunt me again!
I'm interested. But if someone who has more talent and is more responsible than me is willing to do it feel free to ignore me.
I've sent you a PM Lignator.

You guys with talent should step up. paullus is the shiznit and has been doing a bang-up job as FC for the Getai. If we can save xprime some additional steps in developing the unit it will push things along more quickly and smoothly as well and lead to faster and better unit development.

I'm an 'eh' artist but I enjoy sketching soldiers of this era technologically speaking:

Why not give us an example description of a getai unit and we display our graphic work in this thread?
I think it would be really nice to see what different people make of one discription and xprime could choose which drawing suits EB best.
just my two mnai ~D
Edit: I forgot to add that i want participate as well, all i need is a new scanner (going to buy it on friday).
You get your wish, Bavarian Barbarian.
The GETAI LESSER GENERAL
This man is one of the wealthiest and most promising among the Tarabostes nobility, and so in the absence of a member of the royal family, he has the experience and authority to take command of the Getai army. This means that the lesser general will be built off of the existing Tarabostes model, visible here:
https://img175.imageshack.us/img175/1903/tarabostesfc9.jpg
Now, here are the desired changes:
1. First off, we'll go with a bronze Thracian helm (see the helmet of the pezhetairoi) with a nice red crest. You can have the tarabostes' cap showing underneath the helmet and over the hair if you like.
2. Keep the bearded, graying look.
3. Change armor to an iron scale. The scale cuirass should cover the shoulders and extend down to mid-thigh (divided in the middle so it doesn't stretch when mounted).
4. Change sash to a dark brown (or nearly maroon) cloak hanging loosely from the shoulders. The cloak's ends should not touch in front. Instead, have two fibulae on each end, connected to one another with a small gold/silver chain.
5. Add a scabbard off of the belt, which you could embroider, or at least give a nice buckle.
6. Other aesthetic improvements: we'll want a different shield design from that already used by the tarabostes. Similar in nature (circular patterns and the like) with the iron boss and iron rim. You could add jewelry in the form of necklace or bracelet if you so desire.
7. The weapon. I'm thinking of sticking with the sica. If you would like to show him with a sword instead, feel free to experiment.
Thx a lot, paulus!
Will be fun drawing it (well, except the horse ~D) and i´m really looking foward to see the pictures of the others.
My contribution to the cause:
:charge:
You must admit, it's better than nothing... In theory.
here is a quick sketch of a komatai:
https://img80.imageshack.us/img80/4214/komataicd3.jpg (https://imageshack.us)
Made a sketch for the sketch during a (rather boring) lecture today, will do some research (helmet, ornaments for the shield and scale cuirass) so please dont kill me for historical inaccuracies :sweatdrop:
If you tell me what needs to be improved, i´ll make a more detailed one and colour it with Gimp
click to enlarge, looks (a bit ~D) better

My idea for the helmet, not sure if it looks "thracian" (especially the crest)
https://img165.imageshack.us/img165/1222/img004bz2.th.jpg (https://img165.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img004bz2.jpg)
That's moving in a pretty good direction with the helmet. The cloak and fibulae look good. The scale should not part until after the belt, and the belt should be above the scale. No Torcs. Good luck with the rest of your work with it.
Ah, ok. I was pretty confused about the look of the scale, thx for clearing that up. The torc will be replaced with a silver necklace, found some nice pics.
*Off drawing* ~D

I'm finding myself unfond of the two-fibula look - any idea how they arranged it so it wasn't pulling back on the neck rather than hanging on the shoulders?

Hate to doublepost, but hey here's a first draft:

From all i read a normal fibula is pretty heavy (~400g, plus the chain), so the weight alone can keep the cloak in place.
My second try (hope everything´s correct this time)

Thanks guys. There's some slight alterations we'll want to advise the skinners on, but these should be help us a lot. Thanks again!

Its a Dacian Standard bearer, but I think It can be used as a minor general too
Also here is a link I found that can be helpful.

I thought I'd let you guys know that we have had one submission in response here (well, more than one now from the same person) that is really quite amazing; and I think you'll understand when you see it. The ones here are quite helpful, and I know for sure that some of them have helped paullus figure out how he wanted to depict parts of the unit too - so they have not just been appreciated but also directly helpful in getting the unit designed. Back to that one submission I mentioned: we may work it into some publicity stuff though - so we don't want to reveal it just yet. Just wanted to say how great this post has turned out to be for us.
And good to see a new member here interested in EB too Eduorius, hope you enjoy the forum and these wacky EB folks. :2thumbsup:
Yes indeed, thanks for the contributions!

Thanks for the warm welcome and I hope we can see someday those cool Dacian generals that the people draw instead of the vanilla ones. :2thumbsup:
By the way I am known as Eduorix in TWCenter, but dont know what happened to my first account try. :laugh4:
Hey, I thought I might contribute this https://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k257/Astaroth_03/GetaiCaptaincopy.jpg
and if that doesnt work here is the url https://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k257/Astaroth_03/GetaiCaptaincopy.jpg
I did this in a few hours on photoshop. Stil fine tuning it but I thought I would show you all.

It is quite good, especially for being done digitally. the arms could use some work though.. :)
Good work mate.
Some pointers though- get a decent book on how to draw anatomy by Bridgman for example, that's a popular and useful one. Also try to use values, instead of contours to define the character. You might also might want to try to play with layers for the background.
Yeah thanks guys.
Like I said Im not done so I still have work to do.I can put up some more of my stuff if you like. Oh what coud I do to improve the arm? Is it disproportionate?
It's proportions and stance really. It's been a really good while since I picked up my wacom or a pen to draw for that matter, but I'll try to offer some sugestions.
On proportions, the arms are too short as well as the legs. Try to draw joints and lay down proportions before you color, even if they're just basic guidelines. Understand that the various parts of the body are composed of different bits and pieces, and are seldomly straight lines. To understand where each bit and piece goes [bodies are built along the same lines, if you're going for regular bodies of course] is 50% to having a decent drawing skill. And keep practicing...I still regret that I stopped drawing. :shame:
Just a really quick sketch...the cellphone-cam sucks, so sorry about the quality. Notice how each part combines with the next to create movement.
https://img110.imageshack.us/img110/1072/armpitfw0.jpg
On the stance, get a mirror or a camera and understand how you balance yourself when you're standing.
Photoshop or Painter are different skills entirely, and you might need to go to online forums and get some pointers. Some members may even have made threads containing tutorials. The Art community is usually very helpful.
Yeah cool I can see your point, Ill put up some more work based on your suggestions. Very nice arm by the way.
Heres an update on what Ive done so far https://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k257/Astaroth_03/GetaiCaptaincopy-1.jpg
Thanks, haven't drawn in a long time, but it did feel really good. Who knows, maybe some of these days I'll do some concepts again. For now I don't really have the time or the motivation to be honest. Too many things going on with my life right now. :beam:
Final sugestion - use reference if you aren't sure of a particular pose or piece of anatomy. It's really usefull, and there's no shame in it. Like I said, a camera or a mirror really helps.
@Belail
The easiest rule of thumb for drawing humans is that the body is ca 7 heads
tall (for a "heroic" one 8). There are a lot of good guides out there, i´ll post some that i found quite useful if youre interested (i recently started drawing again after having quit 2 years ago and i decided to get some "professional" help).
@Sarcasm
Beautiful work, especially the hand/fingers.:2thumbsup:

Bavarian Barbarian I would also like to see those guides. I like to draw but humans, specially faces and proportions have been my heel of Achilles.
Mine is more animal and dinosaur stuff.:book:
I put something up in the "feeling inspired thread" if you want to look at it.
