As far as I know they replenish over time, or heal after a battle. But you're not able to retrain them. Well, you can retrain them for weapon / armor upgrades - but not to add more men to the depleted unit.

Personal Security Raises the number, as well as one other thing, 90% sure it was influence.

Cheers guys, I fought a mega battle and just managed to be victorious, The general was the only survivor of his unit.

So the higher the personal security of my general my unit will replenish over time to 90%?

I just feel a little attached to the general after what he has fought through!

What they meant is that it will replenish over time. AND that having high influance or personal security raises the maximum number of members in the unit.

Bodyguard units replenish quite quickly (though quicker for the ai then for you).

Your general should be able to fight in a few turns, and be back to full strength soon after.

iirc, a heir gets double and a king 4x the base number of men in the unit.

Personal security also has an effect, as noted

Since generals don't have influence in M2TW (unless I missed something), it should only be personal security.
I once had a non-heir/leader general though who had 22 bodyguard units (small unit scale normal = 16/17) without any personal security boosts which I found funny. Not sure what caused it though.
