View Full Version : Going on a DVD shopping spree
Well I'm gonna go and get quite a lot of movies on DVD. But Now the problem is which movies are worth buying and will be watched more than just once? So anyone a suggestion?
What kind of movies do you like? Love, war, sci-fi?
What kind of boob tube do you have?
all sorts of movies. Really all sorts.
boob tube? No sir.
boob tube? No sir.
You don't have a television? :inquisitive:
The Jackass movies are good if you like watching people doing stupid stuff that'll make you laugh.
The Last Samurai was a good movie I bought it and I've watched in 5-10 times.
Um Troy and Alexander were pretty good movies.
If I think of anymore I'll be sure to tell you.

Layer Cake, Donnie Darko, The Ninth Gate, The Green Mile and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou are great films I've watched or rewatched fairly recently. I also enjoyed Chronicles of Riddick a lot as a surprisingly good and spectacular sci-fi action movie, though that's probably more one to rent. When I next get home I'll jot down a list of worthwhile purchases.
If you can find them, the tv series Carnivalé and Life on Mars are excellent.
Edit: oh yeah, Door in the Floor, great depressing film based on a book by John Irving.

Poor guys, don't have NetFlix (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netflix) (yet). I'm surprised they haven't spread further, or gone to net downloads yet. We've used them since 1999, after getting "fined" $55 as a late fee from Blockbuster.
At $20 - $30 to buy a DVD movie, rental seems the way to go. We actually buy maybe 2 or 3 a year, and that's usually some "classic" I want to add to my library (The Great Escape, Seven Samurai, Metropolis, that kind of thing).
If I want to I can get them much cheaper but lets not go there...

Amazon do a DVD rental scheme very similar to Netflix.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Zissou? :inquisitive:
Me, I could watch Goundhog Day (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107048/) every day of my life! Again and again and again and...

Yes. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362270/)
Lost in Translation is also a favourite of mine.

The Life Aquatic is worth watching for the Portuguese David Bowie songs alone.
The Matrix, Pitch Black, Dark City, Gattaca are all nice Sci-fi flicks.
Clear and Present Danger, Heat, Ronin, and The Jackal are all nice action flicks.
Braveheart and The Emperor and the Assassin are also fine flicks.
If you like music, I highly recommend Bob Marley, The Legend Live at the Santa Barbara County Bowl.

Dodgeball, Anchorman...best movies of all time!
Plus Oceans Eleven. love that one.
Lately, I've just been getting DVD's of TV shows I enjoy: Space Ghost Coast to Coast, The Venture Bros., Shogun. I've been thinking about looking into Gummo, though. It looks interesting enough, but I wouldn't know if it's worth seeing only once and then not buying.
Gummo. Bleah!
An ugly movie about ugly people doing ugly things. I'm sure some will find it interesting but I killed it halfway through.
Try Shogun, based on the novel by James Clavell. - 5 DVD's, 526 minutes; I picked it up at MediaMarkt lately, 30 or 40 €. It's just fantastic.
If you've got some money left and if you're a big fan of GTA:San Andreas, get Menace II Society and Boyz 'n' the Hood.

I'll echo the choice for Shogun, great series and well worth the money.
The mention of James Clavell also brings to mind another stunner, The Last Valley. At first the old-fashioned style of acting irritated me a bit, but the writing, story, and characters are fantastic. It's about a group of mercenaries in the Thirty Years' War who essentially take over a secluded village for the winter. Beautiful movie, the end in particular.

May I suggest that you try out Bruce Almighty which is about a man who gains the powers of god. It's a good funny comedy movie that I have enjoyed watching over and over again. If action is more your kind of thing then I suggest you try purchasing Snakes on a Plane. I haven't seen it myself, but a friend of mine has and they said that they enjoyed it immensly. Another reasonably light comical one that you may like is Kindergarten Cop which is about a police officer who has to pose as an undercover teacher in a schools kindergarten class. Whatever you select, I hope you enjoy and get much pleasure out of the movie.

Braveheart?!
(Even in jest, death threats are not allowed - Beirut)
thanks for the suggestion guys.
Never heard of Shogon but gonna change that I guess.
The box looks like this:

"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".....basically that movie is the reason why they invented DVDs....the cassette tapes kept wearing out :2thumbsup:
The Mexico Trilogy (El Mariachi, Desperado, and Once upon a Time in Mexico) are great movies if you want to chill and see some cool gun fights and such. Lucky Number Slevin is among the best movies released in the past few months. Crank Spiderman and Sin City are all damn good movies and all out on DVD

Battlefeild Earth. Travoltas best work IMO

Yeah, it's pretty much for Nihilists only.
Yeah, it's pretty much for Nihilists only.
Ugly nihilists maybe. I found Gummo to be a grey, depressing, dull movie.
As for good movies to buy:
Casino
Lawrence of Arabia
2001: A Space Odyssey
I've got a good war movie collection going, too many to list. Battle of Britain is great and it sell for less than $10. Just got Ken Burns's Civil War documentary. Very expensive but very good.
Want to get Caligula but I'll wait until the price comes down. $35 is too much for a movie. Going to pick up Eraserhead soon, it just came out n DVD last year.
Braveheart?!
I assume your gripe comes from either
1) Historical inacccuracy (or)
2) The smarmy love story.
:laugh4: Death Threat noted :sweatdrop:

Try the Usual Suspects, or Killing Zoe. In failing that, look for anything Izzard-based.

I was about to say there is no other kind, but then I remember how very pretty I am. It sounds like the movie accomplishes what it sets out to do. Now, to track down a retail copy somewhere around here...

Starship troopers !
Not a lot of other movies I can think of that have a lot of re-watch value. TV series tend to be better for that sort of thing (In de gloria, Coupling,...)
Don't bother with DVDs, just rent.
Buy music. It'll last longer. Plus you can listen to an album many times, whereas a movie gets dull after 1 or 2.

The three most re-visited movies in the Haunted Mansion are, in order:
Joe versus the Volcano
Apollo 13
The Man in the Iron Mask (Depardieu, Irons, Malkovich and Byrne version).
Absolute necessities for annual film watching are of course, It's a Wonderful Life and Scrooge (Alistair Sim, 1953).
As for TV series, my M*A*S*H collection gets watched almost every day.

whereas a movie gets dull after 1 or 2.
That depends on the movie.
Watched The Godfather probably 12 or 14 times already, as well as Braveheart (for all its flaws), I basically watch A Bridge Too Far once per year...

They've just released a special edition DVD of Casablanca. Get it if you haven't already got it.
I must say, though, it's rather difficult to suggest films when we don't know what you already have.

Training Day, Seven, Dirty Harry, Usual Suspects, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Harder They Fall, The Wild One, The Limey, El Matador, The Mechanic, Snatch, Trainspotting, Carandiru, City of God, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, From Here to Eternity, Casablanca...
These are just some of those worth getting. Most of them are also old, so you might be able to get them for next to nothing.
