Weird things can happen in gateways. Things that aren't EB's fault. I've had two units of phalangites beaten away by an eleutheroi unit of sphendonetai, with their awesome general behind them, encouraging them. Those guys were just crammed into the door, and I couldn't use my strength in numbers or my sarrisas. I got irritated by it, but I understand that I should have had a second ram to knock a hole in the wall forty feet to the right and one of my units could have swept in from the side and wiped those slingers off the map. The whole episode was definitely not a stat issue though - if I fought anywhere else, I would have destroyed them (if I could catch them). Your problem is the same and not a stat issue - you fight them head on and your guys would eat them up. If they had an awesome general and were part of the general's unit (or just near him) then they would have been a lot harder to kill than usual too.

The gatekeeper gets a bonus, yes.
Did you know you can re-use battering rams, by the way? :)

Hi,
May I say that I have had something similar occur rather recently in my Seleucid campaign. I was fighting a battle in a nice open field, just the place for my dream fair battle against that evil and disloyal fool, Captain Aristophanes. I had very high quality units in my small, but elite army. This army, made up of two units, consisted of one unit of (Seleucid) Heavy Phalanx with level one armour, weapons and experience, and one unit of Veteran Phalanx which which had exactly the same amount of chevrons, weapons and armour. The twisted Baktrian enemy, which was the bribed captain mentioned above, also consisted of two elite units. These units were two Heavy Phalanxes with one level of armour, one level of experience and one level of weapons. Sadly I misunderstood my position. I sent both units at the enemy at once and they fought hard. They were evenly matched at first until eventually, very rapidly, I started losing loads of men. First my Heavy Phalanx came down to five men (from sixty-two) and my Veteran Phalanx came down to twenty men (from sixty). At this point my Heavy Phalanx routed like cowards while my Veterans carried on the fight still losing about one man a second to the corrupt enemy. Eventually, after destroying the traitor (the bribed captain) which was the only man I managed to kill, my Veterans routed with just two men in their unit. The surprising end result was a crushing defeat with only seven of my men left (from one hundred and twenty-two) and the whole of the enemy army had not suffered a single casualty and was still alive with all one hundred and twenty-three men remaining. This is the most shocking defeat I have ever had in EB or even in R:TW. Do you guys know what may have been the problem? Cheers.

Was your formation broken at any point? If that happens, things can deteriorate quickly. Had you gone a far distance - so that your guys got exhausted at a point? Maybe your captain died and the men became worried and caved in.
is this on medium difficulty, flat ground?

It was reasonably flat ground, just the sort of beautiful lush terrain I like to fight a battle on, but there was a very slight grassy slope just in front of my enemies, but no fighting occurred on that sunny slope. My men had walked a rather long way, however they were still fresh when they reached the position where most of the hard fighting broke out. Unfortunately my Heavy Phalanx's phalanx formation broke up when the number of men reached twenty, however luckily for me my enemy's formation half broke at the same time. My veteran formation never did break, they just lost man after man after each blow of the enemy's long sarrisa pike. My captain never did die during the battle as he was the ultimate coward and ran for his life with my Heavy Phalanx. After the battle was completed my once grand and proud army routed to the hills out of fear never to be seen again. The difficulty was on the well balanced setting of medium and the unit size was "Normal". I hope this helps you figure out what went wrong. Cheers.
