View Full Version : How long do you play?
What is the minimum amount of time that you decide you need to have free before you sit down to play MTW II?
If I want to autocalc battles and turtle for awhile, 30 mins at least.
If I want to fight a multi-stack battle, at least an hour.
Sometimes 5 hours go by and I'm like whoa.....got to work tomorrow.
I don't think I'm addicted or anything. Maybe just a little bit.

I'm so bad with scheduling and such, I just play whenever. Even if I only make one or two troop movements, I can always save and come back to it.
Then again, I spend a lot of time each turn planning and such, so one or two movements can be a bit of a deal.

I play when I really feel like it and I have a spare hour or so. I really don't even attempt to play unless I have atleast an hour to play.

i need about 5 hours to play, thats often spent trying to win a single near impossible battle. i refuse to quit until i've won.
I have a habit of leaving the campaign map running in the background, and making a few moves every once in a while as I do other things. However, I tend to play campaigns at length, instead of trying to break some record for how fast I can crush everyone.
Normally memory leaks and lockup after long idle times aren't a problem for most gamers. They are for me. But it's my own fault and I can always kill the process and load a save game so no biggy.

I aim to get a good hours play in. If I play for short bursts I'll often forget something I was doing and end up letting some units/agents sit in a field somewhere for a couple of turns.

Well, I've heard birds chirping when I only meant to play a couple hours more than once. I usually go full immersion -2 or more hours at a time.

Well, I can go several hours in a stretch, about 3-5 hours in a session when I do decide to give M2 some time in a day.

It's never the scheduled time. Like an hour to do a couple moves ends up being several because the last move started something new that has to be finished off like a battle for a city/castle. I just know I can't say "oh I will do 20 minutes and head off to...."
There is always one.. more.. turn..zzzzzz:shame:

People stop playing?
;)
I got the game for Christmas and took advantage of my lengthy company holiday to really clock some hours on it. There were multiple 'almost the entire day including going to bed at 3:00 A.M. days.
I think the game has an 11:00 P.M. code. Two nights in a row, really exciting stuff started happeing during the 11:00 P.M. hour and I simply couldn't just save and go to bed.
It was during one of these events that I experienced one of the most exciting castle sieges I've ever had that combat was what really hooked me into the game.
Now that I've had the game for a bit, my playing time has normalized to a few hours a night.
I played the hell out of it when I first got it, up to the point that I skipped classes and just didn't show up for work. Brilliant on my part, I know, but I had no finals last semester and I work in my grad school lab. I knew what I was doing. ;)
I've not played in several weeks, but that's due to me playing Neverwinter Nights 2 over and over... I think it is time to break this lil' baby out again, at a more normal pace.

I have failed about 5 or 6 exams because of this damned game:-) Once i started a game at 8 AM and finished next morning at 10. I just can't stop when I start.
If I don't have at least 1 hour to play, I won't fire it up.
In the first day, I played about 20 hours straight. I'm average about 2 hrs/day now.

I kinda do that too, partly because I like to accomplish a whole lot in one sitting so to speak, that and how I never want to feel so rushed to finish something in the game up to a point where it screws up what I had in mind i.e. Battle Plan.:wall:

Like most I end up playing much longer than originally planned. I like to work a campaign while I have the NHL playing on the TV in the background. That way I can keep up with the hockey and still play the game. How long is a hockey match? 3 hours, how long on the campaign map? 3 hours......or more....Lets go for overtime!!!!:laugh4:

I don't start playing unless I have an hour or so. I rearly stop playing before 3 hours of gameplay.
It's always the same.
I go and sit behind the pc.
I start the game.
I look at my watch and I think, ok, at 11.00 PM I'll quit, take a shower and go to bed.
I start to play.
I look at my watch again: 00.30 AM
Hm, off to bed without taking a shower.
The next day I arrive at work stinking like a camel.

I prefer to have atleast 3-4 hrs of free time. Since I´m used to get up very early in the morning, between 4 and 5, due to the nature of my work. I tend to start weekends off early and my daughters usually dont stroll out of bed until around 11 so I have plenty of time in the mornings for game play.
Just curious, what´s your longest session? Mine is 28hrs straight, phui!

LOL, This HAS NEVER HAPPENED TO ME!!! Hmmm, whats that smell? :embarassed:
Oh yes, usually I sit down and start the game...."Well, I wanna besiege this town, then I´ll stop...I promise."....2 hrs. later...."Things are looking good...one more territory and hunt down them Rebells!, then I´ll go to bed!""....1 hr. later....."Damn, who would have guessed the Mongols would show up that fast in my neighborhood! Let´s build up them castles and get decent armies into the area..."
I only play 1-2 times a week, but then I often don´t get enough sleep that night...."Oh, and England declared war on me.....let´s have a look at it!".......

As many of the above posters, I don't play unless I have more than 2 hours available. This game needs deep immersion to be enjoyed, and that only happens after 1-2 hours of management and a couple battles.
So, for me it's usually 2-8 hour sessions, once or twice a week.
PS: shouldn't this thread be a poll ?

Usually two hours (8-10PM) is enough, but no less. On weekends I go for 4 hours typically. On a serious gaming weekend, nothing else happening, I may play 8 hours straight. Have I ever finished with the birds chirping?

I tell you what is sick, I will play the game at home, and then at work when I have nothing else to do, I am on this forum!!!!!! Does that also count as game time?:inquisitive:

At the moment, I don't have my computer with me during the week, so I can only play *gasp* Saturdays and Sundays. Over the Christmas Holidays, I played between 3 and 10 hours a day. :dizzy2: But nowadays, I try to fight my addiction and plan my weekends beforehand so I don't have more than 2-3 hours a day left for sitting in front of that :furious3: machine. It's hard, but my eyes are gonna thank me one day... ~ :laugh4:

I play when I feel like it (i.e. got bored of other games for the moment) and if i have at least 1 hour free. (allows for maybe 2-3 turns late game - micromanagement and making sure evey city builds and there are no heretics anywhere takes forever)

What's wrong with that? :laugh4:
Since I'm married and want to stay that way, I try to limit myself to about 3 hours a session or until she tells me to stop and do something. I try for at least one battle (not autocalc) but micromanaging takes alot of time. If I have been away for a couple days, I wish I had taken some notes because I have no idea what is going on and what I was trying to do. I also usually leave the game on since I have a dedicated gaming PC.

when I feel like it, for however long.
Sometimes I play for an hour, sometimes 5 but I usually get bored and do something more worthwhile with my life.
On average, I'd say 1-2 hours a day.

I remember when i failed a couple of my computer science exams because of my addiction to age of empires, now we have total war, what a waste of time age of empires was!
I'm down to about 4-5 hours a week now. I guess I'm just waiting for the second patch. Too many mods to choose from which is a good problem but still a problem. :2thumbsup: My breaks from the game have been getting a little longer in between sessions but I think it might have to do with the Chicago Bears. Maybe I will play more after they win the Superbowl. :laugh4:

Always longer than I think I will, that's for sure. "This is the last turn" I tell myself. Even if I do follow through with that I end up spending an eternity filling up every build queue, checking every city and castle, and evaluating the position of every army, priest, merchant, spy, diplomat, and assassin. The problem is unless there's a major battle about to be played there's a bunch of little things that you think you can just do before you quit, but you end up doing a bunch of them and poof it's an hour later. I made it to work on time today only because I knew a force would be sallying from a town I was attacking if I hit "end turn" so I knew I had a good 15 minutes ahead of me if I stayed.

I am a guilty sinner! I work a shift that doesn't see me get home until 9:00 pm in the evening. I just have time to visit briefly with my two wonderful children before my wife and I tuck them in for beddy-byes.
After that, I eat dinner and my wife and I watch TV or play a game of something (scrabble, etc) or just chat. By 11:30 pm, my lovely wife is exhausted (she has a normal schedule) and goes to bed.
I can't sleep yet. I have a dedicated gaming computer in my home office. I launch into the game immediately and play until at least 3 or 4 AM. I go to bed, get up at 9 am, read the paper, do odd jobs and maybe errands and then off to work for 1 pm.
The weekends are for my wife and kids. I try my best (but not always successful) to stay away from the game during this time.
Seems to work out ok for all concerned!

Wow, I have single battles that lasted longer than that. I just did this one battle that lasted almost hour and a half. I'm trying though to limit myself to about 2 hours tops. Been working lately.

I will play if I have at least a half hour free time.
Any non-castle field battle that does not involve more than 3 stacks on the other side, whether custom or campaign, I can usually finish in 30 min. Castle battles take about 15 min. more.
It takes me about 10 min. per turn in campaign after the first 10-20 turns or so, so I'd like to play at least 2 or 3 turns before I close the game.
People that play exclusively at 2x battle speed or more, I've seen them finish battles in 10 min. or so.
Even so, I usually lose track of time and go to sleep 30 min. or an hour late. Thank god the office is close to home lol.
