View Full Version : Lag on Campaign map

Hello everybody!
First of all I wanted to say that I really enjoy EB 0.8. Just one thing is confusing me.
When I'm on the campaign map it's all a bit laggy and little freezes from time to time. I don't know what to do because the video options when in the campaign map don't offer too many settings. The weird thing is I can play on the battlefield with huge units and pretty high graphics settings and have no problems at all. Does anyone have a clue why the map could cause such problems and what I could do about it?
I mean I don't want to change graphics settings to low because of the map and change them to higher for each battle. :inquisitive:
CPU is Pentium IV with 3.20 GHz
RAM 1024MB
DirectX 9.0c
Graphics card Radeon 9800XT 128MB
thank you :)

Yeah I'm getting that too.. Could be from all the new trees and extra land marks they put in... Or the general map size itself, it is a lot larger than the original RTW.
I've just installed EB last night. I haven't played it as yet, but I did fire up a campaign just to see how it was running. The game itself took an absolute age to load, at one point I did think it had crashed and was hitting ctrl+alt+del. The campaign map lags horribly, as to be unplayable, a problem I had never had with Vanilla. The battles always lag a bit on my rig but not usually the campaign map.
My spec is:
Athlon XP 2400+ (2GHz) FSB 266
1GB DDR 266
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 64MB AGP
Gigabyte GA7 VTXE+
Pathetic Maxtor 27.3GB HDD (I had a 60GB WD before this that died)
Apart from that this looks to be a great mod, just a pity that I can't play it! ~:mecry:
I may have to throw this thing out and get a decent PC at some stage... :shame:

Have you tried it without loading the background script?
Your gfx card seems to be the weak point of your system. Do you play with shadows on the campaign map? Turning off that option and playing in a 800*600*16
resolution should vastly improve your performance, imo.
I´m playing on 3 GHZ, 512 mb, 5900XT comp now (my girlfriend tried to improve the performance of my new gaming rig with a cup of coffee and it didnt work out that well) and im having no lag at all.
Edit: How much virtual memory do you have?

The graphics card needs to go, it's on borrowed time already, the problem is finding something reasonable, and AGP, to go in there. I'm not a big spender on hardware, having the latest rig doesn't appeal to me, if it works then it's good enough. If I can find an AGP graphics card that will do the job I'll get it, but they're getting harder to come by and I'm not keen on getting one off ebay.
I think I may have turned the campaign map shadows on when I was fiddling about and forgotten to turn them off. They would definitely slow it down, like you say. I'm running it at 16bpp now, though at 1024*768.

I need to check that one as well... I usually restrict it through system.ini, it's not a problem though for the moment as I intend to put XP back on there tonight. I'll try all of your advice then.

Hm, i think the AGP X800 and 6200 series are available for ca. 35 - 50 euros now. But im sure the guys at the Apothecary can you some further information.
Hope i could help!

I had looked at the X800 the X1600 and a few others. I'll look into it, thanks again.

Yeah, that graphics card is really holding you back in relation to the rest of the specs - it's not surprising that EB is taxing it quite a lot.
It's the trees mostly, but also the campaign map resources too - that are causing the problems. The size of the map too doesn't help though.
Try to remove your city and character names also on the strat map - there's a shortcut key to bring up the shortcuts to all of those options.

CTRL-T turns off all names on the campaign map.
