hypapists (spel?)

In my current macedonian campaign i used hypapists in two battles and in both of them they performed really badly! :wall:

Case 1: Battle of Thermon

2 hypapists, both with bronze armor and weapon. both with 56 men.
VS.
1 Thorakitai hoplite. about 50

I didnt expect the thorakitai to rout instantly but the hypapists took ages to kill the thorakitai, and about half of the hypa. died! (the rest of them died when some iph. hoplite deceided to help the thorakitai)

whils on the other side of Thermon 1 40 pezhaitori held of a 50 men thorakitai and even routed them! (in much shorter time too!)


Case 2: A Battle in Asia Minor

1 Hypa. chasing sphendoctai

When the sphendoctai turned around and killed 3 hypa. the hypa. routed!


Are they underpowered? the phrespidai got 1 more attack, shouldnt the hypapists be stronger?

The Thorakitai hoplites are in the RTW phalanx formation, while you hypaspistai aren't. Attacking them from the front is not a wise move.

but i attacked from 2 sides... (one at the front, another at the side)

Thorakitai hoplite's secondary attack *sword* is ap, so they can rip people up with that too.

As for the second case, just a freak accident. What were the conditions here? AI your general died, you were near theirs, were your men exhausted, were their's, and how many men did they have compaired to how many you had?

BTW why were you chasing Sphendonetai with Hypaspistai? Seems like a gross waste, they should be in the big meele not chasing down missiles anyways. Use Prodromoi for that.

In my seleucid and macedonian campains, the Hypaspistai have owned pretty much everything. They are much then Pheraspidai, their spears destory all cav and their swords can destory most inf, while heavy armour protects from archers.
