I was looking through some of the unit stats recently and there was a couple of things I wasn't sure about with regard to what effect they have, so I thought I would ask and see if anybody else knows.

The first thing I wasn't sure about is a unit's 'base strength'. Each unit has a number to represent its base strength, and while the majority of units have a base strength of 80, some units differ considerably from this and it isn't at all clear why. Here are some examples:-

Billmen - (have a base strength of) 1
Clansmen - 16
Catapult crew - 28
Peasants - 60
Most units - 80
Order soldiers - 145
Trebuchet crew - 1000

So there are some strange variations of base strength, and I just wondered what effect this has, or if perhaps it's a redundant stat.

Secondly, there is a stat element called 'FORMATIONS_PREFERRED_NUM_ROWS', where each unit has a number to represent its preferred number of rows. I wondered what effect this has also, if perhaps a unit gains some kind of bonus or is more effective in its preferred formation, or if maybe this stat is only for AI purposes or something. Some examples are:-

Longbowmen - (prefer the following number of rows) 3
Clansmen - 4
Urban militia - 5
Billmen - 4
Spearmen - 5
Chivalric Sergeants - 4
Pikes - 5
Spanish Jinettes - 3
Steppe Heavy Cavalry - 4

Does anyone know the effects of these two elements?

The first I'm not sure about, the second I think is only used by the AI to make certain it forms it's units properly.

I have no idea for units base strength stats except that maybe it was set for coded instructions but it's nothing more than a miserable try.
On the other hand I can tell you [Formation preferred number of rows] stats is for cosmetic purpose only and I've modded it several times. So, if you want billmen to line up as the urban militia you can change the 4 to a 5 and still get no trouble.
