View Full Version : Huh? Did I just lose that battle?

Okay, had a full stack army as the HRE and assaulted Bordeaux, at that point occupied by the French. Had a few mercenary units, among which a "rhibault" (sp?). I needed some artillery units because I had none and couldn't be bothered with waiting another turn to build a ram. So, I got the mercenary rhibault, which is some sort of light artillery.
Anyway, the battle starts, and I direct the rhibault at the gate. Which it smashes. I then fire a bit more at some enemy units and suddenly, I lost the battle??? :brood:
"The enemy has snatched away victory"??? So, I reckon it's a bug, reload the game and try again. Same thing. Once the rhibault runs out of ammo, I lose the battle! :wall:
That's dumb. I guess it's because Bordeaux's a fortress, and I had not breached the second ring wall. Of course, there's no need for breaching it, since the ring walls are interconnected.
Thought I'd post this, might save someone a reload...

No working siege equipment + unbreached wall = insta-loss.
Shouldn't always be, but is.

Funny you should mention this as this happened to me last night and I think there may be a tiny bug relating to being out of ammo and losing. I was assulting Genoa and the only defense was a cannon and Xbow militia. My only siege equipment was a mortar and the thing would just not connect. Eventually I got the wall down to 90% and had one shot left. Thankfully it connected and the wall section was down. Unfortunately it seemed that as soon as the round was fired off and the wall was still intact I lost. It landed and I saw the animation of the wall opening up as I had punched in, but it didn't matter as the results screen soon popped up.

ths has already been discussed before in earlier threads

Yeah, simple solution = never fire your last artillery shot and it won't auto loose the battle.

Or jsut wait a turn to build a ladder which at least can't break.
These are valid work-arounds, but when you do breach the wall and the artillery runs out of ammo, why do I lose? :D
I just re-siege and build ladders the next time.

It does write you lost, but actually it is a draw. No biggie. Okay it is quite stupid with a castle, where you can travel between the walls. But if you pay attention it won't happen. It happened to me only once.
Not really a draw, as your army retreats from the city you were beseiging. So, while numerically it is a draw, tactically its a loss. No matter though, generally my armies have enough movement points to reseige the same turn.

I had another mysterious loss last night that I think I figured out after the fact.
My English troops, defending Gaza from the 9th siege by the Mongols, decided to sally and wear them down a bit. I did so:smash: , and was pleased with modest losses, and went to exit the battle. It said if I did, I would lose. I thought, huh. So I didn't exit, and went to check that everyone was safely within the walls. Yep, they were, so I tried again. Still a loss. It's 2 AM so I think, well, maybe it's just being goofy. But although my troops were decimated, I still held the city. Grrrrrr.:whip: :whip: :whip:
I went to bed when it came to me:idea2: : I had built too many troops for the city to hold, so there were a couple of cavalry units sitting outside the city. Even though they never appeared on the battle map, the program seems to have been considering them to be troops "left outside the walls" triggering a loss on my sally.:wall: So I should have sacrificed a few units to die so that they could come onto the map as reinforcements, hope they could make it into the city before they ran into the Horde :skull: and THEN exited the battle.:wall: Correct? Bug or feature?

the walls are interlinked but troops are not allowed access into the critical areas until they have been compromised by artillery or siege engines.only then can you go up the towers interconnecting the walls to enter that level.

:laugh4: I actually find it kinda funny :smash:
Ah, sorry, man :)
Anyway, when I siege I always wait to build some siege equipment (ladders, towers, etc.) and then I auto-resolve 'cause I just dislike siege battles, unless I'm defending. That way you won't have to worry about things like running out of artillery ammo and whatever.
Well, at least you know what you shouldn't do next time :2thumbsup:
