View Full Version : Why can't I drink anymore?

Recently, including tonight, I haven't really been able to stomach alcohol. I can't take straight shots anymore without feeling like I'm going to puke and mix drinks, despite any ratio I try, taste like crap. I use to be able to pound down shots and mix drinks no problem, now I can't stomach them. What the hell is happening to me? This is quite upsetting. Does anyone have a good explanation?

Apparently, you're turning into some type of pansy.

Have you watched The Notebook more than once, ever, or recently felt the need to talk to people about your feelings?

Seriously, I have no clue - see a doctor if you're feeling bad when not drinking? I doubt you liver is failing you this young.

I don't feel bad when I'm not drinking, just when I drink. I dont need alcohol, I just want to be able to enjoy it.

PS. I've never seen the notebook EVER. :smash:

You're 19. You don't have the proper stomach for booze yet. Give it time.

As for The Notebook, oh my... That movie is an emotional nuclear weapon. I went to bed only to be awaked by an uncontrollably sobbing Mrs. Beirut two hours later. Saddest movie she ever saw.

I told my buddy to rent it for his woman the next time she was being insufferable - which would be soon in her case. She'd be begging for forgiveness for things she hasn't even done yet.

I had this too at one point, just don't drink for a while, your stomach should heal itself, it's surprisingly resilient.

The liver has to detoxify the alcohol. If you overwork it you will feel the difference.

Give serious alcohol consumtion a break for a few months. Give your liver time to recover.

In an odd case of reversal, i find myself capable of drinking entire bottles of Martini every friday without any problems.

Maybe i stole your drinking abilities?

That thing about detoxifying the liver, I dunno. I've had my liver pretty much detoxified, and when I drink beer nowadays, it just doesn't feel good, as it actually was okay during the times I did drink a lot/frequently. It's like my stomach, etc., ain't used to it anymore.

Compare it with an athlete: you overtrained your liver.

A few days rest to recover. Afterwards, start drinking at a regular basis but take a break every two days, increase the amount of alcohol slowly each couple of weeks of training.

Within a couple of years you'll have an amazing, superbly trained uber-liver :2thumbsup:

And within two or three decennia, you'll die from liver cirrhosis :shame:

Never experienced this myself, but I know several people who claim to suffer from something similar to your...condition. They're all in their twenties and complain that they can't stomach as much alcohol as they used to.

A vermouth man, too, eh? Mmm...

But yes. Maybe it is just the onset of age. As one gets older, the liver becomes less able. Which is why young whipper-snappers like myself are free from hangovers after nights on the vermouth, or polish off a bottle of Black Label on Hogmanay (over the evening, of course) without unsightly consequences...

Did you have a bad experience with alcohol recently? I drank far too much cider once, and was sick as a dog the next day. Now even the smell of cider makes me feel queasy, and I couldn't drink at all for a couple of weeks. A similar thing happens whenever I have any kind of bad hang over, I always thought it was just a negative association type thing. Or maybe an inflamed stomach lining, for the sohrt terms effects.

Your live clears alcohol from your body within a day, two at the most if you've been drinking really hard. Seeing as there's no way you've got cirrhosis, I wouldn't be worried about that.

That's the thing. Last time I drank was last Saturday, where I got pretty drunk, stumbled home, and passed out. No puking, no hangover.

Just make sure that you're not developing an ulcer. My brother developed one in his 20s from drinking too much cheap whiskey. Other friends have had stomach problems from it too. Your body could be rejecting it.

Watch Withnail and I and go get bladdered!!! Served me very well over the last two years, very well indeed, though my liver aint liking it, it does feel like it is gurgling sometimes! ~;)

But yeh I know exactly what you mean, I go through stages of not being able to drink specific types of alcahol - or at least really not wanting to - at any certain point, normally after I had been drinking it a lot the previous few nights. At the moment it is Vodka for me - oh hangovers of nightmares, but nights out of joy! - we all got a bit carried away at my mates 20th Bday...

Anyway, I am sure you know what the answer is - just keep on battling through it! ~;)

My body decided to fix me another way; now I get terrible hangovers from any amount even when I drink a bunch of water. So, I haven't gotten really drunk since St. Patrick's day.~:mecry:

(Thankfully, there are many much better drugs out there.~;))

you have probably mildly irratated the lining of your stomach and digestive system with too much alcohol. it happens to me nearlly every time i go on holiday.

stay off the alchohol for a few days, then start with beer and test out spirits a few days later.

avoid mixers altogether, they are for girls.

Because it's such a sin for something to taste good... If you're a real man, you'll be able to stomach eating or drinking San Pedro or Peruvian Torch... that is a challenge.:balloon2:

You're probably tired. I find alcohol ruins me when I'm tired. Have an early night the day before, eat some proper food, and you'll be leaving others in ditches before the night is done.

I find having a break helps too. Heavy drinking constantly meant I was getting pretty ill when I drank anything by the end of last summer. What a fun time that was. *sigh*

Well, I thank you for the gift, very thoughtful. But I'd say it's Mrs. Beirut who needs forgiveness more often than me.

Can you send her a copy of any movie with Jessica Alba?

I do but I am saving them for myself......

Ice, Relax dude. You're probably just pregnant. Your hormones will try to protect the fetus and turn your stomach against the alcohol. Mrs. Colreone went through the same thing. You should probably notice the symptoms disappear when you finally stop nursing, somewhere between 9months and 1 year. :2thumbsup:

All kidding aside, it could be a bunch of things. You've said that you've quit for a week or so. That'd be enough time for any acute (immediate) stomach damage but not chronic (long-term) or any issues with your liver.

You may have something else all together, and your liver is telling you "Look, I can deal with the disease, or I can deal with the booze. Not both. Take a break".

You may also be slightly allegric to certain types of alcohol (well, actually, the other things in there, which is why it's different types...). Not much you can do about this. Allergies are funny. People assume that because they haven't had issues in the past, they're not allergic. Typically, it takes several exposures to start getting a good allergic reaction going, and they intensify with each exposure.

Finally, let's bring in the world's experts. Now many nations claim to have advanced drinking prowess, but as somebody who's travelled widely, and drank heavily, I can tell you there truly is one group that towers over all others in terms of raw ability to put down mind-numbing quanities of alcohol and not feel any affects..... So, Kagemusha, Watchman... what do you advise? :finland:

Don,thanks for the "compliment",~;) Id say that poor Ice“s stomach is irritated becouse of booze, i think everybody who has taken larger quantaties of strong liguers like Whiskey and Gognac or Tequila have felt the odd sensations in their stomach afterwards. To put it short dont drink more then you can stomach, maybe you ought to chance the types of shots you are drinking or drink more more "softer" drinks. Or lay down the drink for a bit.If you are drinking coctails in my opinion those are just evil.My recipe is straight shots and beer. Those never fails you to achieve an hangover.:smash:
