View Full Version : Need Unit Cards - Want your work in game?

As the team works down the list of items needed to finish off the Patch, we've identified a few units which still have Peasant Cards. Although we have guys who could create the Unit Cards, they are working on new units instead. So if you can create the following cards - quickly - we'll get them into the patch:

1) EDU #216 - Numidian Cavalry - We already have the small one in the UI/UNITS folders - #african_missile_cavalry_numidian.TGA, so we just need the large one for the UI/UNIT_INFO folders - african_missile_cavalry_numidian_INFO.TGA.

2) EDU #18 and 26 - Cidainh (Celtic Chariots) - Need both unit cards. The skins are the same for all three Celtic Factions, so if you do one, you've done them all.

3) EDU #112 and 147 - Scythed Chariots (Pontos & Seleukid Chariots) Need both unit cards. The skins are the same for both Factions, so if you do one, you've done them all.

Here's the link to a tutorial on How to Create Unit Cards (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=51373).

Edit: It isn't that hard to do, as you can see from Obelics' work in this EB Thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=63802&highlight=unit+card).

OK. One hundred and eleven people took the time to read this thread, and not a single response, much less somebody spending a few hours to help us out. Yet while this thread lay fallow, a real opportunity to add value to the mod, several individuals constructed some very long "whiner posts". So long in fact, that the authors could have built these UI Cards in the time it took to write their manifestos.

Whatever. Obviously too much to hope for.

I'll see what I can do. I don't have classes tomorrow so can stay up working on them and getting it just right since this is new for me.

Don't expect anything yet, but I can give the Hellenic chariots a try through editing out other stuff from some screenshots I accidentally took for exactly that purpose. Any results not to be expected before next weekend. (I don't think that I'll have much time in the meanwhile to do them... :juggle:)

If I'm succesfull though, I could do more in the meanwhile.

This is just a question which is kind of unrelated to the matter at hand, but do you evaluate each description submitted?

Geee, making this lousy unit card took almost an hour ( my first try to mod RTW besides fooling around with edu stats :embarassed: )

I´ll try to improve this one and do the others on friday/weekend.

Kudos to all the poor guys who had to make the myriads of unit cards.:stwshame:

Better than me so far, but coincidentally we have the same angle.

Maybe coz its the only possible angle for a chariot. ~D

My very first pic had a width of 260 pix, i had a good laugh when i saw it ingame...

Hey, you're on the same unit as I am. Considering that you did more than me already, I'll just drop this one - so we don't get in each other's way. Allow me one 'contribution' though:

Cool! Suffice it to say, this is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than peasants! And if there are multiple submittals for the same unit, we'll evaluate them internally and pick the best ones for the mod. And don't forget to do the "Small UI"s too (although those would logically be nothing more then a shrunken version of the big boys).

Kudos to all the poor guys who had to make the myriads of unit cards.:stwshame:

Think about it. At one skin per unit, that would add up to 350 cards. Except that in most cases units will have customized skins for multiple factions - up to 12 or more! So the real number of UI Cards is well beyond 1000!

Honestly, this is a pain, but the celtic chariot is coming along.

If anyone ever complains about peasant cards again, they can bugger off.

In all honesty, VERY FEW people ever took us up on the offer to "write their own" (turned out to be wishful thinking on our part). So most of the descriptions are written by those guys we believe to be experts in their particular area, and they get vetted to some degree (i.e new ones are posted internally for review), although nowhere near as intensively as the units.

Thanks again for working this, and although I'm not happy you are going through some difficulties, it'll be nice to have some folks out here who understand it's not a snap of the fingers to create these, make them look good, and get them in game.

It took me 4 hours, but here is what I've got done. It isn't perfect yet, but it's 00:10 here in Finland so I finish it and the rest tomorrow. Shouldn't take so long, as I now know what to do with the alphas and stuff.

http://xs511.xs.to/xs511/07053/NumidianCavalry.png (http://xs.to)

As I said it isn't perfect yet, especially the alpha's aren't. And while I'm proud of the grass I don't think it's quite in par with the great EB grasses you have under the numidian foot skirmishers and other folks.

That Numidian pic represents all what Numidia is.

Excellent pic ;)

And why not sand if grass is giving you trouble?

Hmm, post up links please.

If the EB team fails to put them in, it would be nice to have them. Thanks!

This is certainly a different process for making unit cards than the ones I made for my mod, which were very similar to vanilla. Far more complicated too.

I'm sorry guys. I haven't even had time to play the game in the past week or two. Work, work, work, family, family, family.

I will keep my eyes open for further requests for the public to help in the future, however.

Cleaned up the alphas of my Numidian Cavalry, and I'm ready to release it. This is the final version, unless someone notices something horribly wrong with.

http://xs512.xs.to/xs512/07054/NumidianCavalryFinal.png (http://xs.to)

Hmmm... just realized I can't upload .tgas to xs.to, so I don't know where to upload the ready product. Any ideas?

Well, I'm off to do the chariots. BTW, I noticed that Pontos chariots have the small unit card, but Seleucid unit doesn't have it. Both are lacking the big card though.

Try to make a .rar/.zip of it and/or upload to http://www.axifile.com/.

It looks like a vanilla card for Pontos though.

Ok, I have finished the Celtic chariot also but don't have the energy to try it ingame. (Kull didn't give the name of the file and I'm too tired to look it up in the EDU). If someone else wants to try it out and maybe post pics of it in action, I have uploaded both the Numidian Cavalry and the Chariot to Axifile.com (Thanks Oleo!). Of course, if there is something wrong with them I'll

Here are the links (both are compressed with winrar):
Numidian Cavalry (the big picture) (http://www.axifile.com?2690071)
Celtic Chariots (both small and big picture) (http://www.axifile.com?5923757)

Hope it's use to someone. Took me ridiculously long. Especially the grass under the chariots. I have no painting skills so it's made by sweat tears and sore back.
I have also versions without the grass, if someone can make them better.

Here ya go, Puup's Chariots:

Nice work so far guys! :2thumbsup: The best of these will definitely make it into the mod for the v.81 Patch. I really like the "action shot" Puup used for the Numidians, and the angled "top down" look at the chariots seems to translate best for their UI cards. I KNOW how tough it is to make these, so thanks again, and I won't object if there's more on the way!

Edit: There's room for two Celtic and two Eastern Chariot UIs (total of four), so if there's enough good ones, we can probably have different cards for each.

The files inside the rar are named like: original_eastern_chariot_scythed.TGA

I recently made another version, I figured I include that in the rar:

Guys, I want to thank all those who worked very hard to create these UI Cards, especially since I was given multiple versions to choose from. And here are the winners (whose work will soon appear in the v.81 release):

1) EDU #216 Numidian Cavalry - Puupertti Ruma

2) EDU #18 and 26 Cidainh Celtic Chariots - Puupertti Ruma

3) EDU #112 Eastern Scythed Chariots - Oleo

4) EDU #147 Helenistic Scythed Chariots - Oleo

Man, I'm trying to figure out how to get renders to work in 3ds max but to no avail. So frustrating. Apparently there is a unit card template ready to go and all you need to do is get the unit to render and do some tweaking and you have pro unit cards. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to go about doing this, I have just downloaded 3ds max for the first time. Anyone have any experience with the program? Know how to use it, render units?

-edit-
Found some more tutorials, including the cas importer/exporter, but it's not working. Did everything I think I'm supposed to, final step of actually importing the unit model and it seems like it should work but after loading there is no image on screen. Just the blank 3ds screens.

-edit-
Oh my, looks like the units were there, just realllly zoomed out. Off to figure out how to use it with the pre-made backgrounds and whatnot......

Still need help in the Art sector? I am a qualified Artist and Designer up to A levels and right now I am finishing up on my first year of my BA Degree. 4 years exp. in Adobe software and 15 years in art (however I am counting from when I picked up a pencil).

I really love the mod, but I have an ache to quench. Some of the art really stands out from the vanilla artwork in that it looks worse. It is possible, if you are working along side the vanilla panels that you can incorporate the style used for them. That way the mod will have a polished look to it.

The above goes for not just the unit cards, but the buildings too. This is a fantastic mod and this is the only real gripe for me. Any chance I could help?

After April 23rd I will have a lot of time to spare, until then it will be a little scarce.

I have a very niche portfolio in that its just studies of certain things, not full colour illustrations.

The images here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=200&t=358836&page=1) are between 3 to 12 months old, I have not had the time to commit to the forum as of late.
