View Full Version : The ultimate challenge, anyone else do this

This is my ultimate challenge for myself and for other people as well.
It is very simple, and for me extremely hard to do which is why I like playing this way.
Be the ultimate chivalric line as a catholic nation, no matter who attacks you do nothing but defend your land (do not send your lads into another catholic faction's lands) even when they take two of your princessess and then attack you breaking the alliance, do not declare war on anyone else instead wait for them to attack you, and even then only destroying the armies that invade your lands join every Crusade that is called with a majority of your soldiery while leaving only a skeleton force at home for defence, regulary give money to the Papacy just out of the goodness of your heart, in Europe only take rebel provinces which historically belonged to your faction, and if that doesn't increase the excitement enough while on Crusades or retaking towns in your homeland you occassionally lose never press the exterminate button that is for knaves and primitive impalers not chivalric royalty you must on top of everything else accept having to have high squalor and high unrest cities. You do not start trying to take over the map untill some time in the 15th century which is when you may also stop giving regular gifts to the now exposed as frauds Papacy, which is balanced because at this point you may face pretty good enemy technology.
Has anyone else tried my special challenge?
P.S I find that diplomacy is actually useful in this mode for getting the evil agressors who take advantage of my absence on Crusades, and at the same time it helps my Crusader Armies because they are made up of the vast majority of my forces, and the best to, although the obvious disadvantages of having ever growing in power nemies.

This has been my playstyle since Shogun. I don´t leave my homeland with the majority of my forces though. The ultimate challenge in this game is... peace! One exception is playing Rome in RTW since there wouldn´t be much of an empire otherwise.

I accept your challenge, Horatius. I was going to go the chivalric/diplomatic route with my next campaign anyway. After finishing up my Byz campaign in a day or so, it will be on to... France! :knight: Pour l'honneur et la gloire! :knight:

I've been playing like that for a while except that I do invade nations that attack me. Only occupy and ransom/releasing.

I am glad to see others are doing this.
Just remember no matter what the provocation, even if it is killing four of your heirs in a treacherous battle (just happened to me, I knew not to trust the Germans but my idiot Lord Chancelor told me they would not attack my ship carrying my heirs back home from the Crusades) Catholic owned cities are off limits.

Even if they're excommunicated? Or don't they count as Catholic any more?
What about a crusade called against a Catholic faction?

1. (assuming city in question is not a Crusade target) if they are excommunicated it only means that the nobility has been a bunch of scalewags and scoundrels, but because the cities population is still of the same flock as you are you may not conquer the city. You may however assist an allied faction in taking the city, which maybe helpful to you and makes diplomacy mean something.
2. No good Catholic knows better then the pope, if he calls a Crusade on a Catholic City then Deus Vult (just remember that you are only allowed the city he calls the Crusade against).
Good luck
I was considering a game of nothing but agents offensively. Armies van only be used on crusades and for holding ground.

Good luck at that, although beware of being too successful and assassinating the Pope.

Using agents only? Too simple.
I am currently trying to dominate the game world by using only Princesses. they cavort around the cities dressed in sheer frocks with their baps nearly hanging out and have been the cause of multiple conflicts between other nations through their diplomatic wiles. Soon all of them will turn rebel muhahahaha.

Are you allowed to freely attack infidels? Within the bounds of chivalric warfare, it goes without saying...
But could you play as, say, France, and launch a naval invasion of the Moorish lands in order to help out you besieged christian brothers in Spain and Portugal?

Sounds reasonable. Even better if you can get the Man in White to bless the outing.
Of course, to be a true noble king, you should give the newly taken provinces to your brothers in Spain and Portugal...

I do this all the time. Except once the Pope says they are excommunicated, all bets are off and they are open to invasion. For my current challenge, I am attempting to conquer the world with nothing but peasants! I started an AAR on it here: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=78164
Should be fun once the Mongols arrive.

hahaha this is actually very similar to how I play normally :2thumbsup:
You know what the pope did to me for being a good boy catholic? Frenchies attacked me and pope gave me a "warning". Next turn frenchies attack me again and I am excommunicated LMAO.
I thought it'd be funny to wipe out the pope then. Had a good laugh :laugh4:

If you fight outside of your land you get excommunicated, even if you aren't the one who declared war.
