View Full Version : bribing the pope
when i first started playing m2t the pope was really annoying, he constantly stopt me from expanding my empire. So i realised that a conflict between me and pope would be unavoidable. And when the pope called for a crusade towards the excommunicated faction milan, i saw my chance now i could march into Italy with the popes permission.
Although when Rome was taken and the pope killed there faction wasn't destroyed:furious3: . Later on in the game i made peace with the pope and i realised that if i would give him a gift of a couple of thousand florins he would forgive ALL my sins. So now i could go and fight all the catholic faction.
now this isn't just a nice gift its a bribe and with it he wont care if you attack any Catholic faction you don't have to do any more mission no more crusades no more train a priest in this settlement, and most importantly no more seas hostilities with this faction
The pope loves money. Just gift him whatever you can spare at the end of your turn, every turn, and he won't bother you. And if he does, that's what assassins are for. I made getting the pope in my pocket a first priority in my HRE campaign as I knew I'd be going to war with everyone shortly and getting excommunicated and having to fight off Crusades would have been that much worse.
10000 will make your relations perfect, you dont need to give him more...
Just set up a 100/turn for 100 turn fund for him early in the game and ignore him forevermore :P

IMHO one of the most faithful and accurate translations about medieval life in a modern simulation.

Cash is always king, Dopp. I even relocated him to Jerusalem and guess who has stopped for tea over there? Genghis and his mates, he he!

I've just finished a Byzantine Campaign were I decided to play historically. My goal was to resurrect the Empire at its peak, under Justinian (VII°s).
And that mean conquering a good part of the old roman empire, including Rome and southern spain.
In fact, I didn't have to attack the Pope, his Holy Highness did the job for me and decided to lead his troop himself to repel me out of Naples - a town I Rightfully took to these treacherous Sicilian !!
Trough he outnumbered my own army by 1,5 to 1 and a better quality (I had a mix of poorly trained militia and ragged mercenaries), I managed to beat him under the wall of the city. Must say the Pope was no coward cause he died fighting in the breach created by his artillery after his cavalry killed 60% of my spearmen.
Just before that my main field army in Italy (who sneaked by the northern pass near Bologna) assaulted and took Rome itself for the glory of the Emperor ! That let the newly elected Pope with no troops and no land of its own. A little gift of land (hey your highness ! wanna some palace near the red sea ?), the swift blade of a 10********** professional killer (had plenty of those, you didn't think they gave me those 10 skulls for nothing, hummm?) and here is another new Pope, meek and powerless, surveying goats in arabia.

Money will always do the greatest things. Like that one quote from RTW, wars are won due to money or something like that
