How does someone gain a surrender from a Faction? There's no option in the diplomacy options. is it really a Faction Destruction?

You ask them for peace and state your terms. As far as I remember it is quite difficult to get a peace if you are playing vanilla.

what effect does Protectorate have?

Hi,
I belive that a protectorate gives you:

A large cash tribute from the protected faction each turn.
An alliance, trade rights and military access both ways (meaning that you have permission to walk on their lands henceforth they don't have a good excuse if they attack you for it)
Their lands count as your own (eg. if the protected faction was to have two territories and you had twenty then your count would be twenty-two.
You have a cast iron guarantee that they will not attack you although the alliance may end if one of their allies attack you.Good luck and cheers!
