Okay maybe this wish would be to go to far, but any chance we could get the generals speeches before battle in original language?
Id love to hear some real sweboz nonsense! lol

Maybe we could, but what would be the point? Are you going to note it down, translate and giggle later?

Perhaps... ~;)

It would be nice to read what the units actuallt say in battle when they not simply shout their name. Can I find these sentences somewhere?

You could turn subtitles on. Perhaps that is what you mean?

(Though these may be incorrect if the EB Voice Mods use different sentences than Vanilla and the subtitles haven't been updated.)

Do you know how much more work it would be to translate the speeches? My God, what an undertaking. And then record them? Yeah, it's doable, but would it sound good? Having the orders and voices of the units in the original languages is enough, in my opinion.

...

But if the speeches were in the original languages, coolness points would be had all around.

I like laughing at crazy general's speeches so no.

Okay that last reply won't bring the intro's much 'closer to home'... the one before that on the other hand...

I initially flirted with the idea myself. I think I agree with GodEmperorLeto on this one. It has already been much work for us to do the voices, let alone do entire general speeches. You know how many sentences are recorded in total for the vanilla Roman speeches? 650 wav-files, each being a sentence.. that's a lot of wav files to produce.

I mean, when I click on let's say leves they sometimes say "ave". Ok, that I understand. I know what word they are saying (i.e. ave). But when I for instance group units and command them forward the centurion (or whoever) might say a whole sentence or two. I don't want a translation (I can do that myself) but I'd like to know what words the voice is saying for me to analyse them.

It will take some time and a lot of :book: but,

Ancient Greek voicemod was started by Teleklos, continued by me and with the noble assistance of Tellos Athenaios we seek to bring it to a total immersion status. (Shigawhire's help and guidance was VERY helpful, as he leads the voicemod effort) It will take time however, and I must ask for patience. But, If you like what you heard so far, you will like the rest...

And if you want to laugh with it, knock yourself out... :laugh4:

However, before even beginning to look at that direction, there's alot of research to be made...

Most of what you heard were on loan from Xenophon and his Anabassis. Pre-Battle speeches will be based again on Xeno but more on Arrian. Even if he wrote the book on Alexander 400 yrs later (everyone agrees is the best of them all), he is more epic on his text, more goal driven...,

Xenophon on the other hand, in the ancient text, reads like an AAR. Like he is closing his eyes and remembering what exactly happened. Textbook Merc.

So, you can understand why I will be going by Arrian this time around.

:balloon3:

Intro translations might turn out to be completed faster than the battle event ones (there are fewer sentences to be done), but the real issue is we don't exactly know how the engine picks it's intro's, and thus neither how we have to arrange the sentences to make them be picked at the right time only.

Most of the work will therefore be all sorts of (play)testing, and a bit data gathering stuff. (How are certain people called in ancient Greek - the Sweboz for example, or the Saka.)

And if only we could have those vanilla "guideline speeches" translated and working...

PS: Has anyone actually heard such sentences - those like "we should slaughter them from a distance" when you're fielding lots of archers - when playing EB 0.8? If so, then we might not need to play around with the Vanilla packs... (And that probably will save considerable time.)

If you guys really wanted to be jerks, you could translate the entire game into the original languages.

...

It wouldn't be a big deal for me (at least as the Romans or Greeks), and it would definitely help me study for my language qualifiers.

I don't think it's a good idea, the languages spoken aren't widespread, some not spoken, so it would be pointless to translate a speech into something nobody will understand.

It would be authentic, and it would just be plain cool to listen to. How many people listen to the speeches as is?

As shigawire, tellos, and keravnos have indicated, there's a LOT of work required to create ancient language pre-battle speeches. From my perspective, that work would appear only at the beginning of a battle - never during - and with a single click most people would blow right past it and head for the battle. So these things would be heard perhaps a few times, and then never again. Plus during any single campaign you would only hear the speeches of your faction, not those of any other.

By contrast, the existing voicemods click in before AND during the battle. Plus you can hear the voices of the enemy too. So the amount of "earplay" the existing mods would get versus the "speech mod" is roughly 100-to-1. That equation makes it pretty darn hard to justify spending resources on speeches (although if some guys want to do it, so be it.)

MeinPanzer, thank you. :2thumbsup: Will do!

As for time spent, well, I believe it will be worth it. Not to mention the fact that it will take A LOT of time to do all the research required. It is not something that can or will happen overnight. Remember how long it took EB to have Ancient Greek being heard in the first place.

As for translating the whole game in Ancient Greek, now THAT would be pointless. All other voicemod work, just increases immersion.

I know, but he said it would be pointless. I'm just pointing out that it wouldn't quite be pointless, but I agree that it's probably not worth the effort anyway.

I found the vanilla speeches to be rather charming actually. Some of the more pious, or crazy generals sometimes said some rather funny things. And sometimes they'd really let you know just how big of a battle this was going to be, and how screwed you might be (assuming, of course, that losing a battle had been possible in vanilla). Though, with the changing of nations (and the new ones) around, I doubt the original speeches would make sense.

Those you mentioned are exactly the ones we would like to have in most... and sadly seem to have disappeared with EB. (The tips & tricks that is.) It also seems as if the speeches are controlled by certain triggers, for example what faction you're facing today, or the amount of archers in your army... And thus, if we could find out what exactly those conditions are, we can have a 'sound' pre-battle speech Voice Mod. But first we need to finish the battle event sentences anyway. (Translations for the Greek Voice Mod are done, recording however will take some time though. - If you want to know for sure ask Keravnos, he's into recording - But it's about certain that 0.8.1 won't contain those files.)

The changing of nations would require us only to rename a couple of sound files...

The vanilla speaches are ok. There are things like "let them tire themselves out on our line" when defending, or "we can use the trees to our advantage" when you could lay an ambush (which never work, btw), or "we may have trouble with their cavalry" when facing horses with only swordsmen. But what I hate is nearly every battle my guy will say, "I have faced this enemy many times," even when he has the trait "Green", I find that one stupid.

Though I do like how they can recongnize the enemy even if they are officially a different interal name. (ie "servents of Phaoroh" when facing Ptolaemai even though they are internally "numidia,")
