In my Sicily campaign i took calgari off the rebels which is fairly normal. I decided to start my normal scheme of building it up inot a trade centre when i was greeted by some unwanted visitors. Milanm, Venice, the Moors, Spain and Portugal all sent fairly powerful half stacks (in the early game). It is especialy infuriating seeing as the island has a decent garrison and i had alliances with spain and portugal! Is there some kind of internal message going around europe that Sardinia is the place to be or is it just sods law?

No kidding. I took Corsica as France in my "nice guy" game. Within a few turns Sicily had a 6 unit stack there followed closely by Milan's half stack. Over the course of years Milan kept ferrying troops over and built their expeditionary force into a monster 22 unit Italian Militia stack (I think something is messed up with my stack sizes). It was crazy. And by the way, how the heck is Milan fielding and supporting all these troops, plus a powerful galley fleet, from only three modest cities?

It is quite rediculous. They just sit there endlessly, wheter at war or peace. In some cases the moment the garrison drops low enough they attack it. While some factions literally just sit there, and make no aggressive moves at all. In my Milan game the entire Sicilian royal family sat there on the island. I've seen the Pope land on the island and sit there for a few years, totally alone without any other units to protect him. I've seen AI faction members die of old age on the island without making a single move.
I just can't grasp it. Since the patch the AI seems to model itself around the vikings, which in itself isn't bad. But on this one island they just throw logic out the window and go totally over the top.

Yep, the ai just gets ridiculous arounds islands now. in my venetian migration game, i captured that one byzantine castle of cyrene i think and kept a sizable garrison it. The byzantines would drop off about a quater stack army every turn or two and then not besiege my castle so i would kill the army and then the same thing repeats. My garrison in a matter of about 20 turns went from no exp to all silver

With islands they pretty much can't get vassalated... I think they fear that more than wiped off the map.

Oh plz not more Christian Trance.... I guess at least they don't have to have too many lyrics. Perhaps Urban III was actually the inventer of Christian trance?
You can always turn this to your own advantage. When you want to start conquering one of these countries but don't want the reputation hit, just de-garrison (if that is a real word) the city and they'll probably take the bait and attack. You got the war you wanted (admit it, you wanted it) but it's them who are the aggressors.
If you get it right you could probably attack the army whilst it is beseiging the city and smash them against the walls.
