Hey, has anyone checked this game out? To me it just looks like a cheaper rip off of the glorious total war games, but i am quite inclined to have a go at it.

I downloaded the demo from GameShadow and played it the other week. I bought the first Europa Universalis when it was out on budget. EU3 is OK but I would wait until the price comes down. To me its more of a micro management game as the actual battles on screen involve the adversaries having a bit of a dance before the winner is declared. I did play the demo for several hours though without reading the instructions, as you do, so I suppose it depends on what type of games you enjoy.

A cheap rip off of the glorious total war games??? EU is far from a rip off of TW, EU 1 and 2 are strategy games, that are far more complex and challenging than the campaign in TW games and the diplomacy worked, but it do lack the battles of TW.

EU 2 is with is an improved version of EU 1, is probably the game I have played the most, in spite of the lack of graphical glitter.

Yeah, EU really can't be compared to TW. EU1 and 2 were really quite interesting games to play - I actually remember learning quite a bit about history and geography. The diplomacy and trade aspects of the game are superior to TW but the military segment of the game is very much "move your army here - fight". In fact, I don't think EU3 includes a real-time or even turn-based military component - but I could be wrong as I haven't tried EU 3 yet.

What EU lacks in military strategy, it more than makes up for it in diplomacy in trade, which are far more on a "micro" scale than the TW series. Overall, the games are very enjoyable but perhaps not quite as polished as TW.

I highly recommend.

EU 3 has earned some very good reviews so I might check it out this weekend.

I did buy it, but you need a card that has 2.0 shader support. My card still works pretty good, it's a saphire radeon 9000 128mb, but more and more games now are requiring things it just can't do. It's not even alowed to try for EU3! Caesar IV was another one, and oblivion.

So anyway, don't have much to say about it other than I can't play it.

Anyway, the EU games are most assuredly *not* a rip-off of the Total War series. The first game (Europa Universalis 1) came out in 2000, the same year Shogun Total War was released. It has just as proud a lineage, and just as rabid a fanbase. ~;)

Where as the TW games focus more on combat and the military aspects of running your faction, the EU series focuses more on the political, economic, and diplomatic aspects of empire-building. It's really more of an apples-oranges comparison, and both types of games have their appeal.

and the EU has over 200 factions and countries to choose for. if you want variety, check this game out. plenty of places have the free demo.

I would really like to this game, but at this time, my pc can't play it at any reasonable speed. Since EU3 is in real time, and must manage all those countries continuously, its sadly more demanding on my computer than Medieval 2 :( Oh well... At least M2 runs :D

EU is the ultimate diplomacy game. There´s simply no comparison. If TW had the diplomacy interface that EU provides it would be the ultimate game. EU is a must buy for the avid strat-gamer.

My Asus geforce 6800 gt clocked to 512 mb with 2.0 shader support plays oblivion so it shud play eu3
