I download mu copy of Rome:Total War then try to start it up. It goes to the Play,Links,Download screen but when I hit play Rome a error message saying " an unspecified error has occured. Rome will now close." What is this and how can I start playing my game?

I am rather sure that downloading R:TW, without paying for it, is illegal.

Indeed, downloading (without paying!) is not legal - it's piracy.
If that's the case, coming to this (un) official fan site may not have been the smartest move one could have thought of.
If this is all some misunderstanding (badly phrased initial post, perhaps ?) then the first thing you should do is list the specs of your computer. Vid card, RAM, Mobo etc. etc. Then, providing a screenshot would help a lot also.

Welcome to the Org, Titan!
Our rules prohibit the discussion of piracy, including downloading games without paying for them. If, however, you meant that you'd installed your copy of Rome and that it's not working, then you should follow Dutch_guy's advice and post your computer specs.

Perhaps not that drastic. Maybe he didn't know it was illegal or perhaps he thought that it was a free game off the internet anyway? The pirates often want you to think that so you believe it isn't ilegal. It's easy enough to think.

Why would you think total war was free?
And trust me, i know members of the illegal downloading community, and they got fined £20000 for downloading pirate games and ordered to do 70 hours community service

Not knowing any better.
If you lived in some country away from the PC gaming publicity and shops which sell games you would not know the TW was a priced game, would you. Henceforth if a pirate was to claim it was a free download, you would have no reason to not believe him/her.

But surely if the pirates are claiming it is legitimate to download games to unsuspecting citizens then they shud be wiped out like terrorists

"Wiping somebody out" is a little bit drastic to say the least for a "medium" crime like piracy. It cannot really be compared to terrorism, although it always says on those "F.A.C.T" DVDs that "piracy funds terrorism".
