View Full Version : Using VI portraits in a normal campaign?

Hey, I was wondering if the kickass portraits used in VI (the smelly, long-haired barbarians :D) can be used in the normal campaign? I'm using XL and am playing Ireland, and those portraits would be far more fitting.

Does anyone know of a way? Thanks :)

Check your game folder. You'll find a subfolder "portraits" in subfolder campmap, iirc. The "portraits" folder itself is divided into cultural/religious groups. The ones you seek should be in Vikings. You can simply copy those to another folder but you have to make sure that they're named correctly. For example, Catholic/Assassin/ should contain portraits that are named Assassin001 up to Assassin030 or something. You'll see what I mean when you look at the folder. Make a backup copy of the folder before you change anything and then test it. I'm not sure if the changes affect savegames, you may have to start a new campaign.

Thank you very much! A pity you can't specify the portraits per faction but per religion, but all Catholic factions are now looking.. barbaric :2thumbsup:

Since R'as al Ghul already answered your question, all that's really left for me is this:

Thank you!

I already noticed that my kickass heir has a similar portrait, while the French seem to suffer from extreme moustaches..

It works immediately by the way, so no need to start a new campaign.

The suprising thing about VI portraits is the princesses. As far as drawings go, the princesses are pretty. While in MTW the princesses portraits are disqustingly ugly.

A better way would be to go to your MTW main folder then campmap/startpos

open EARLY_XL.txt and add the following text to the bottom:

//========================================
//
// Override function for the portraits..
//
// When this is specified the game will
// ignore the factions culture when
// locating the portrait images and
// use this folder instead..
//

I prefer it like that. It really get's to me when I'm marrying off one of the VI "lasses" to a general. I always have to make sure he's a fitting suitor. With MTW there's no problem at all, though I do often pity the general... though if he's a cowardly gluttonous pervert, then he's probably getting no more than he deserves. :beam:

Well, you can always turn off the light....

But yes, I like to roleplay alot, and if I was the king id make sure that my daughter was marrying a decent looking guy.

Does this work on my current (scottish, XL) campaign, or do I have to start a new campaign?
I prefer asking before manipulating some files...

It works immediately, at least the first option.

I'm going to try the second one as well (thanks Rythmic!), because I think the Spanish need the 'original' portraits.
