View Full Version : Query - A Popeless Papacy?
I'm not sure if this question has been asked before, but I'll ask it again anyway. Do refer me as appropriate if this has been discussed before.
As Milan on 0.5 year/turn I destroyed every single Catholic faction, save for the Papacy. Hence, everytime the Pope died I'd automatically get one of my cardinals elected, since the College of Cardinals consisted of Milanese naturally :laugh4:
Which brings me to my question, which hit me at this point of the game.
If I let my army of priests and cardinals die, and if the Pope dies, what happens then? If there is no candidate there should be no Pope. :laugh4:
Btw, I conquered Rome and killed my own Pope, destroying his armies in the process. But the next turn another Pope was elected and a single pathetic Papal general unit appeared beside Rome.
Since I am pretty curious about this, I shall unashamedly bump this up...:inquisitive:
I did this yet instead i wiped out all the other cahtlic state cardinals (i didnt have any). He was then left with no cardinals so i struck dwon and killed the pope in 2 turns. From then on the game couldnt elect a pope so therfore the papacy was wiped out :help:
I've never tried that but I presume if there's no Pope then you can't declare crusade, and you will never be excommunicated for harassing another Catholic faction, hence no one can call crusade against you. And Muslim and Orthodox factions might have easier time with their expansion, no unity among Catholics.

You have to kill every catholic faction and then the pope and let all your priests die for that to happen.
Not likely.
See if you can get the papacy back up afterwards?
You can never be reconciled or get rid of inquisitors either
@pever - it comes back up on you acieving victory conditions, i think

Don't the Papal State also have cardinals? In my current game I have all seats in the college of cardinal save for one seat that belongs to a papal state cardinal.
They start with one but i've never seen another one elected.
Yeah, for some reason they don't build their own priests, despite the tons of tribute I gave them.

Well, it doesn't matter if you reconcile and let the last one die off naturally.
If there is no Pope then my Duke is the new leaer of Christiandom. :laugh4:
To Sir Boo: When you say it was wiped out you mean the faction didn't appear under "diplomacy anymore"?

so i actually played as the russians (note: not catholic) and have the same effect i killed every other catholic faction and the pope himself. then i saw him pop up from somewhere instantly so i thought that he would be created from nothing but after a little bit i killed him too and forgot about him for a while(tens and tens of turns). now i cant find him anywhere on the map and i even used the toggle_fow command to see if he was hidden somewhere bc i was puzzled as to if i could actually kill off the pope permanantly. so yea i guess it can be done. im just a little skeptical though bc when i killed him the first time there was not a catholic bishop anywhere in the vicinity that he showed up

Really, when I play under vanilla, they always have at least two cardinals - on average.

I've seen new papal states cardinals before (LTC latest version).

The papal states trains cardinals. And when there is an election they also cheat.

i killed the pope so many times immediately so he wouldnt be able to pick new cardinals and then i killed the last one and there were no more popes

:laugh4: Lol.. That is funny and realistic... Never thought it was posible since the game is mostly based on numbers... CA must have included a trigger for this...hats off
Look at the horrible and sinner face of the "new Pope"... :laugh4:
By the way, I think that's correct because England has decided to abandon their "old land" and instead migrate and make friend with "infidels" :wall: :laugh4:

ive noticed that happening sometimes lately, i'm thinking it may have more to do with the preferati system being changed or something, as apposed to base votes. I've seen some get elected while having as much as 5 less votes, so i'm thinking either its based on piety (as in my 5 cardinal votes= 41 piety, while your 7 = 40piety, so i still win)
or, it could just be some sort of bug where some votes just aren't counted for whatever reason. Pure speculation on my part since i am not savvy with computer stuff.
