im getting quite bored with M2... anybody know a good MP FPS game? i was really considering Call of Duty 2 if its good. or a really good action game or a VERY good RTS game.
COD2 is okay for MP if you find a good modded server with ample amount of people, or at least ones that are skilled and fun to play with. The many servers and their mods make for many interesting playing experiences. The best mods are the realism, since you can actually kill someone with a shot to the chest. After a while it can get booooorrrrrringggggg. Try BF2 if you're up to it. It has some good mods coming out plus good expansion pack(s) not sure about the new one tho.
As for RTS try CoH or the new Dawn of War: Black Dark(whatever it is) Crusade. I think it is stand-alone so you don't have to buy DoW just to get it. Battlestations Midway just released its' demo along with Supreme Commander. You also might wanna try MadMinute Games, Inc.'s Take Command 2nd Manassas, it is supposedly the best American Civil War game out there.
These are some off of the top of my head, hope it helps.

Multiplayer FPS has to be Battlefield 2. Or maybe Battlefield 2. Although I might make an exception and go for Battlefield 2.
PS: Battlefield 2 is the only multiplayer FPS I've ever played, so my opinion might be a little skewed.

i also thought of Battlefield 2 but the GS review (which is good) is intimidating for me.

America's Army is free, though it requires a bit of a learning curve and a very steady mouse hand.
MOH:AA is old. Really old. But it is insanely addictive, and you should be able to pick it up in bargain bins.
Other then that, there's the Battlefront and Battlefield games, and Wolfenstein.
F.E.A.R. Combat: the free version downloadable for MP purposes. They basically took the MP part from the full SP/MP game.
Besides that one and the other ones mentioned here, I'd have to second CoH, simply because the setting alone makes a person immerse into it. It's one of the best RTS games I've ever had my hands on.
Day of Defeat: Source
No question about it - easily the best fps I've ever played.
As for CoH, it's fine as long as you like micromanaging and having your tactics in part dictated to you (there's very little flexibility even in skirmish maps thanks the the supply system and it feels far too much like you're running around in circles for no reason, imo)

As already stated above, Company of Heroes is a fantastic RTS. Dawn of War Dark Crusade is also a lot of fun. It would be worthwhile for you to review these two titles. I think you will find them interesting...

That thing about microing is true, and it takes a fast mind (not to mention a fast physique) to be able keep up and play an effective streamlined style in skirmish or online MP.
About the running around in circles, I don't know what you really mean. You mean for instance the enemy might cut off your supplies behind the main line and you have to put a couple units back to retake a position, stuff like that? And reinforcing units at base and then sending them to the front again?
Anyway, what I like a lot about CoH is the Victory Point system. It forces players to take those positions and hold 'em. It's constant back-and-forth offensives and defensives, flanking maneuvers, tactics, etc. But while it's happening you could very well be sending some troops to the enemy's base if you can reach it with your current army, and even call in some arty to take care o' them. Beautiful :laugh4: Or what about detonating a bridge when your enemy crosses it? Hilarious! :smash:
If you're gonna get it, God's Grace, enjoy it!
@Bijo
What i don't like about coh
- You can't play defensively
- The skirmish maps are far too big (so you have to spend all your time recapping points that you can't hold effectively thanks to the pathetically small unit cap)
- The ai cheats (well, not really, but a human player can't micromanage 4 snipers at once; it can)
- The skirmish difficulty levels aren't 'right' (one's too easy, another too hard - same thing with dow)
- Battles just turn into an excercise in outproducing your enemy
But you can play defensively. It's just easier to play offensively for most people.

Battlefield 2142.
Very steep learning curve, even for a BF2 Vet.
People actually brought 2142 :inquisitive:
I'm not touching another EA game after bf2
Their persistent stats system is ruining the franchise - if there's one thing i hate in shooters, it's having time = better weapons/equipment/abilities.
Everyone should be on an even playing field, and they're not.

My computer couldn't even run the game. My brothers could, but then it came down to if you can find a suitable server with team players. It was hard, but every know and again a group or two would crop up.

In 2142, they also added in game ads that constantly stream new advertisement and will track how long you look at it and stuff like that
That's the future, and is a good thing for companies

Theres ads? Same as bf2. A start up once up ad. Small. from the game itself.
In this one, its much easier to rank up. The unlockable weapons are not much better that the normal ones. Just specialised.
This last weekend was "All unlocks Weekend"
Everyone had all the unlocks.
Bonus: If you had a character in BF2, you put it in, and get a free rank up and upgrade for your guy in BF2142.
If it isn't flashy graphics and high SR you are looking for, I would suggest the games, Thief, and Deus Ex. (P.S. avoid Deus Ex 2 and Thief III like the plague, as Warren Spectre ruined them both. A sad end to two good franchises...)
If you don't like those two, I'd suggest BF2. (not BF2142 as it is not nearly as good!) BF1942 was darn good too. I've played a lot of FPS, but those, I must say, are the best.
As far as RTS, Total War are the only ones I've ever been impresses with.

I have to disagree with BF2 being better than BF2142. 21 has a new mode, which is so much more fun, with another new mode being released with Northern Strike.
Answer to billboard advertising ingame. Get an Australian copy. It's illegal for them to do that in australia, so the australian copies have the in-game advertising taken out :2thumbsup:
@pever - you got a source for that?
afaik there's no law against that in australia (and it's probably out of the government's jurisdiction)

wikipedia its from, pulling linky now, if possible, were they got it from as well. But its true, as I have no ads ingame.
Advertising components
Battlefield 2142 shipped with dynamic in-game advertising provided by IGA Worldwide. A similar system is featured in games such as Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, and SWAT 4.[25] The system changes advertisements on objects such as billboards in-game. These in-game advertisements have been dubbed adware by some, and there has been a vocal backlash against this element of the game.[26] Some players also alleged that the game contained spyware that monitors the user's web-browsing habits. However, DICE employees have claimed on the game's forums that the game only reports what in-game advertisements the player look at, and for how long.[27] The Australian version of 2142 however lacks the Dynamic Advertising feature[28] as it is believed to be illegal under the Australian Spyware Act.[29] EA/DICE are currently holding a contest to find the best player in-game ad ideas (futuristic ads) to put into the empty billboards in the game. Civilization 4 is a game I can highly recommend.
@pever - under my reading of the act in-game advertising is perfectly fine (it'll be agreed to in the EULA) but it's not worth them argueing atm ;)

agreed
The Australian version of 2142 however lacks the Dynamic Advertising feature as it is believed to be illegal under the Australian Spyware.
So they left it out in fear maybe. But :focus:

Counter strike source is the king of FPS and only costs around a tenner though.
Wouldn't appeal to a first time FPS player mind.

Pretty old but my 0.2 is....
Well playing defensively in imo kinda sucks. Because what we're talknig about here is turtling and decorating your base with turrets/mines/barb wire/sandbags/machine gun posts etc. So you simply make it suicide to attack you. If this is a successful tactic then both players will do that and you'll get a stalemate. This actually happens on the "Vire River Valley" and "lyon" 2v2 maps because theres 3 bridges between the two sides, so everyone just fortifies the bridges. Its boring. CoH however offers something where turtling is suicide, it means you have to get out there to succeed.
About skirmish maps being too big, well I know this is gunna be me doing the old "you're complaning because you didn't know how to play properly na na na na na" but barb wire is free and goes up very quickly. It costs 50 munitions to get barb cutters, thats ALOT early game. Get out early with barb wire and your points will be safe until you have a larger force. Also by determining key buildings and rushing up a mg42 team in one can cut off your enemy from whole areas of the map.
AI cheats...well it does that in all strategy games.
Play online, its much more fun ;)
5...lol you've played strategy games before right? :sweatdrop: Whilst with cover, flanking, special abilities, etc, coh does have an extra strategical dimension. But you're not playing a TW game here mate, I just play it for a good ol' bit of fun and try not to worry about the fact its not the greatestgame for finding the greatest general...but what it is is fun

anyone notice that Company of Heroes is alot like Brother in Arms?
beat campaign great but it kinda feels like an AOE ya know, the bigger the armies the better?
@monarch - you make some good points, but i just don't get enjoyment out of the frantic grab for points that CoH and DoW tend to be, especially in mp
