I am angry with the Internet speeds.
We pay for 500kb/ps, we get 50
We upgrade to 1.24 mb/ps, we get 150kb/ps
We upgrade to ADSL2, (4 or 5 mb/ps) and we get 460 kb/ps..
Only once, EVER has it maxed out dl speed.

You make an interesting point about Fileplanet...
I usually seem to get 40-70KBps(320-560kbps) on most downloads, but last night I was getting close to 140KBps(1.1Mbps) from Fileplanet- which is much closer to what I'm actually supposed to be getting from my DSL. Fileplanet must have their servers very well connected/placed.... for me anyhow.
My internet is about the same speed as Xiahou's.

Yeah, i was surprised when i downloaded a game off fileplanet in 6 minutes.
I think you've got some of your facts wrong pever ;)
There are no 1.24mbps plans in australia, and 2+ is up to 24mbs
Try downloading off an australian server (such as internode (internode.on.net)/ign (games.internode.on.net)) and see what speeds you get.

If you're with telstra i've no sympathy for you.
They have crap service, rubbish speeds and massive prices
Internode ftw - largest gaming network in australia (Servers, linky (http://games.internode.on.net/gameservers.php)) + mirrors every game patch via 3dgamers + almost every mod via ign + most linux distributions and open source software.
And none of that counts towards your download quota.

Are you sure you aren't getting Kilobits and Kilobytes mixed up? Those speeds don't seem totally unreasonable.
I'm on a university connection in halls. I'm not entirely sure of the speed, but it's pretty quick-I get download rates of 5-7 Megabytes/S at quiet times, when few other people are using it.

In that case the speed will be something like:
50 mbit/sec
If you want fast internet make sure you get to study at the University of Twente. 1 gigabit per sec ~:cheers:

There are a lot of other factors effecting how fast you get your data. The 10 Mb/s or whatever is how fast it can put the info onto the wire. There's delays for it reaching you, delays while the sender waits for it's turn, corrupted packets that have to be resent, and then some of the data sent is just header.
And besides what Sasaki mentions, there is terminology.
500kb/ps to me means "fivehundred kilobit per picosecond"~;)
let's assume you mean "fivehundred kilobits per second" as in 500kbps or 500kb/s. That is how most connections are advertised.
When you now download something, your download program will most likely show the speed of your download in "kiloByte per second", like 50kB/s.
Now since every Byte consists of eight bits, we are about there because 512kbit/sec(probably the real speed) equals 64kByte/sec and the rest of your loss comes from things Sasaki mentioned like upload(communication always goes both ways), resending of packages, packages taking long ways etc.

Yes, people are always getting confused over why a 1mbit/s line doesn't download at 1mb/s hehe.

Was at 512 kbit, getting 50 kb/ps
at 1.024 mbit/ps getting 150kb/ps
at 5mbit/ps getting 450kb/ps

Well, you should divide the connection speed by eight to get your download speed. But that's only a theoretical maximum, you'd never actually get that.

Simple - isps are trying to sell you something, and bigger sounds better.
Browsers have no such restrictions so display things realistically

We had here a problem with internet.
The ISP gives to us 640Kpbs and the modem was giving us 32Kpbs.Now its fixed

I think it dates back to the old modem days. The baud rate = bit rate for old-school communications. Using bit rate in telecomms makes more sense than byte rate, because a data line may not be always be transmitting a byte-oriented protocol.

40 bucks here for 6-8MB cable
After a year of CRC errors (noisy telephone line) on all my DSL downloads (meaning every file over 5 megs was corrupt) it's fixed itself. :sunny:
Now I can DL stuff myself instead of having to go to my buddy's house and burn all my DLs onto CDs there and bring them home.
Speedwise, about 150kb. My buddy's cable machine was hitting 2000kb. Shmuck.
We pay $40 a month for 1GB of "fast" speeds which are supposed to be around 1mb but I end up with 60 kbs on a good day! Our phone cuts it off whenever somone picks it up, and after that 1GB is used up then we get 4-6kbs. The problem is that my parents don't have the money to waste on their crap service!
Telecom are a bunch of criminals charging ridiculous prices for rubbish service. Our Prime Minister even called them criminal. Everyone else has it soooo good compared to us ~:pissed:
