Playing as :egypt: I have taken most of Italy now, including Rome, destroyed all of those wimpering Greenies, leaving just the Scips between me and my ally Britannia, and the Brutai hanging on with only Salona.
I completed the 50 provences and Take Rome, and chose to continue to have the pleasure of killing all Romans before I quit.

Anyway, a new experience, that I wonder if its a glitch or if its something I need to be aware of whilst holding so many Roman cities.
I am working my way up Italy and am dealing with Segasta and Mediolanium but I was struggling with Croton at the foot of the country as I accidently enslaved rather than exterminated when I took the city.
I destroyed all the Roman buildings that I could but was still in the Red, and when it started rioting, I let it rebel so I could retake it and exterminate.

As I had destroyed all the military buildings I was expecting a city of peasants; however I am faced suddenly with about 12 units of maxed out hardcore soldiers.

how?
is this a Roman thing? are they all hiding in the government buildings with their armour under the beds? its even more annoying as they only had 4 units in the city when I first took it.

so, any experiences or suggestions ?

Sounds like you do have a problem there... Since you want to take over the whole map... Why don't you try to send them the plague first (you have time), to reduce their numbers (I know this is not always possible). For those who don't know how, send a spy from a plagued city to go and infiltrate you target city... Blam, they get the plague.

Then, besiege them without assaulting to reduce their number some more. If they sally, just withdraw. A war of attrition.

You don't want to bribe them, because you want EXTERMINATE them.

Then there is always brute force, but you know that.

Hi bedlam,
What units were these hardcore soilders? If a settlement rebels it automatically takes units from the recuitment pool in the city (which should have been peasants and gladiators, should there be an arena or above) and then takes units from the local mercenary pools. Often all of these units are maxed out in experience for no apparant reason, proabably to make the city harder to recapture.

Good luck with getting back your cities from your stinking rebels, cheers!

Sorry Om,

reading your question I realised I'd missed that bit; The city had reverted back to a Brutai city which was the issue, as if it were just rebels I could ignore them for a while, But I'm trying to kill all Romans.
Unfortunately there are bloomin loads of gold plated Principles waiting on the walls for me.

I've destroyed the Garrison so I was stunned to see them. Thats pretty much the essence of my question - with the Roman cities do I have to avoid rebellion otherwise this will happen again in other cities or was this just a weird glitch ?

It could be a weird glitch, as you have said, although I believe that sometimes, if a loyalist revolt - rebelling to a faction rather than the rebels, then some special veteran troops sometimes get brought in. For example, when I was the Greek Cities, Salona rebelled to me. It contained some standard hoplites which were not, trainable in the city, and also peltasts which were not either. I believe that it may be a feature, although I am not really sure.

It might be a feature. This happened to me against the Gauls as well. So its not just the Roman cities.

Thanks guys,

I guess its just a risk that needs to be dealt with like all the others:

now though a follow up question would be whether a city has to stay in your ownership for a certain amount of time to revert to rebels or whether you have to destroy that faction.......

pondering.. pondering..

Anyway, I guess its just a risk considering that sitting in Brutai occupied territory they are just waiting for the opportunity to weaken my position....
this means War !!

probably why they call it Total WAR ha !

Hi again,

now though a follow up question would be whether a city has to stay in your ownership for a certain amount of time to revert to rebels or whether you have to destroy that faction.......Sadly, this will be a continual problem till the Brutii faction is dead or the city advances in level through one of your own governor's residence buildings. Sadly, if it is already a huge city, the latter is impossible and your only hope to stop these loyalist revolts is to go hunt and destroy those cursed Romans!

Cheers!

We must keep in mind that Roman soldiers retired to these towns after their 20 or so years in the legions. They had an obligation to come to the aid of the Empire to protect these cities and towns if attacked.

There probably were all these veterans in the city with armor under their beds!

does this come back to the rebels then?
On a seperate note I actually managed to get one of the juli towns to rebel hoping it would come back to gaul who where still in the game as allies for this effect. It did nt it went rebel. I just think the game is rigged for rome to win. Often their towns will not revolt despite only having 20% PO for several turns. Croton went back to Bruti for a riot at 80% in one turn HOW??

Hi Captain Pugwash,

Hmm, that is a common error. I think that it may have something to do with difficulty levels.

I think that to work out if a settlement is going to go to the previous owners then all you have to look at the culture of the govenor's residence. If it is still the culture of the previous owners then it will revolt to them. If not then it goes to the slave faction - a.k.a those stinking pitchfort weilding rebels.

I just think the game is rigged for rome to win.
Not always, I have seen the Brutii and the Julii lose to the Greek Cities and Gaul, respectively, on a very hard campaign as the Scipii. Also in that campaign Rome was exterminated and the senate was completely killed. Not a bad thing however, with no nasty bearded old men telling me what to do I had the opportunity to go wild and do what I wanted - sadly I was destroyed too within a couple of turns by Carthage :embarassed:
