How do I get my cavalry to charge in M2TW, when I double click, my unit yells "Charge!", but they all draw swords instead of lances, is this supposed to happen?

Not having M2TW yet (curse you old comp!) I can't offer any solid advice but you can find plenty of threads about it in the Citadel.

To answer your question, there are many factors that go into charging.

1. make sure that the unit is formed up (in neat lines)

2. the flatter the ground, the better

3. single right click to charge (then hit 'r' to make them run if you want)

4. Pause the game, and order your units one by one, or they'll attempt some sort of 'smart attack' that never works. This applies to all units that are grouped - if you want them to work properly, order them one by one

No, no, not at all!!! One of the most rejoicing situation in those games is to have a an enemy unit pinned on your spears while your horribly heavy cavalry charges in their back!!!!

As to the moment when the unit actually charges, the charge effectively happen at the last moment. The unit reaches it's charge speed a few "yards" before the enemy.

There is this lance to sword thing that I wonder about. But I don't play M2 yet...

To answer precisely, a unit charges when it moves to atack, you don't have to order them to charge specifically. You click, or double click on the enemy unit. Your unit marches, or runs, towards the enemy. Your unit will charge automatically when at the right distance.

There are two vital aspects to a successful charge. Firstly, and most importantly, you must have soldiers! There is no point ordering non existant soldiers to march into battle, they don't generally obey! Except for your imaginary friends...

Secondly, you must have enemies. Otherwise your soldiers are simply running and screaming at the top of their lungs for no apparent reason. In most civilised cultures, they will then be known as 'that clinically insane fellow' or 'the madman down the lane'.

Follow these two strategies, and you will never go wrong, believe me.

Well, my dear friend, you have forgotten the third vital aspect, which is in my opinion the most important one: you need a GROUND for your enemies to stand on, and for your soldiers to run like hell on.

Charging succesfully needs a lot of caution: if you forget one aspect, you're doomed.

sapi
02-28-2007, 10:45
You also need horses.

And lances.

And swords.

And stableboys (to care for the horses)

And blacksmiths (to make equipment)

And a commander (preferably with an outrageous british accent) to lead you into battle.

Seriously cazaric, do we want to go there?

Hello!

The best results I've had for mass cavalry charges is to deploy my horse in 2 or 3 deep lines and surround the enemy army in a roughly circular or semi-circular formation.

Then group all the units to charge, then ungroup them (keeping them all selected) and then finally... double clicking an enemy unit that lies in the centre of the enemy formation.

All the horse then charges inwards in a fairly impressive and morale shattering manner.

Caerfanan, you're absolutely right! I mean, there's no point trying to run on water (although some claim there was this one guy...I won't go there) as you'll just sink and drown and, rather than being known as 'that clinically insane fellow', but instead as 'that poor bugger on the bottom of the sea'. Swimming in armour just isn't great fun.

And as for attempting to charge on air, well, do I need to say anything? Xehh, don't try it!

Sapi, I'm afraid you're wrong...there is no need for commanders, swords, lances or blacksmiths. All you need for a charge is a lot of raging lunatics running at another person with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. That doesn't necessarily mean they intend to cut up their foes into tiny pieces and feed them to the dogs back home. No, they can just maim and murder them without weapons, as long as beforehand they run like hell at their intended victims.

Thanks for listening.

Or crush them by throwing the horses at them. But that would be a ranged unit then, so off topic...

(Argh, Lord Cazaric has taken control, please help me!!!! :laugh4: )

Well, more seriously, I think that cavalry charges were devastating mainly because of the momentum of the horses. If I'm correct, by the end of the 14th century, the knights' armours were having something to put the end of your lance on in order to be capable of relaying all the force to the foe without needing that strong an arm. Heavy weight + tip of a lance directed to your chest => man don't you stay here!!!!

Brilliant! A unit of either Supermen or extreme weight-lifters! That'd be a sight...100 hobilars with bulging muscles charge within 10 metres of a hostile unit of chivalric men-at-arms, suddenly dismount, pick their steeds up onto their shoulders and hurl them into the enemy soldiers, knocking them all down.

Horses = Siege weapons? :dizzy2:

:beam:

Lord Cazaric
03-14-2007, 05:18
Of course. They are certaintly not hand-to-hand, and as soon as they are lifted off their feet by the superhuman soldiers, they no longer count as cavalry, but are ranged!

That leaves archery and siege engines. And except for one of these superhuman soldiers (Ali ibn Ali ibn Ali by name), the soldiers don't fire them from bows.

Therefore, except for Ali ibn Ali ibn Ali's steed (steed? Arrow?), they must be siege weapons, as they are thrown like rocks.

Xehh II
03-14-2007, 08:26
You are strange, why would it be like a seige weapon?
I think it'd be more like those funny little javelin guys but without javelins.
Because they would be short range, AP and they are thrown.

Spajus
03-14-2007, 09:25
Cazaric, I fear you are being ridiculous.

You are attempting to define 'horses' as seige weapons? p'shaw! Your logic is flawed. You have stated the exception which proves the rule, in Ali ibn ali ibn Ali, and his bow-drawn-horse. However, the Ballistae, an acknowledged seige weapon, is also essentially a giant bow.

Faced with such hasty logic, how can you expect anyone to take what you are saying seriously? (A pity, because I would tend to agree - artillery!)

By the way, when's Cazaric-mod coming out?

Soooooo.... :stupido2:

The horse not being efficient against a wall (I guess), it shouldn't be a siege weapon, that's right. You have a point here Xehh II!

It could be the non explosive equivalent of the Naphta throwers, though, the guy having a chance of being crushed by his own missile, and the missile being capable of killing several people at once. what do you guys think?

So the unit size should be 12, showing the difficulty to train the horse-thrower.

(and now I remember Xehh II asking a simple question about charging in M2TW, my, where are we!)

What mod? If you're referring to Hellas: Total War and Steppe: Total War, they are simply ideas for the next games, or if someone would like to, as mods for the original Medieval Total War - it's the only one I have!

And Caerfanan, I'd advise you to cut down the number of soldiers in a horse-ranged unit to 5. They are VERY hard to find. Especially ones such as Ali ibn Ali ibn Ali (whose name, for those of you who don't know, means Ali son of Ali son of Ali).

Thank you for acknowledging my insanity. It is why I am still a junior member.

Mmmmm. :stupido2:

So we could have two types of units:

- one of a size of 5 with Ali ibn Ali ibn alis as launchers, and armored horses. The Alis having huge bows acting as ballistas, this would be artillery.
- one with a size of 12, being the non explosive naphta throwers sometimes dying under their own horses (% when tired?)

If you're going to go into horse throwing units, you have to count them as a short ranged catapult with area damage that lasts around 30 seconds 'til the horses stop kicking. It's quite a complex matter, actually, and you'd just have to make a few textures, add a unit, etcetera.

Say, a horse is around 15 hands on average, but if you really want to squish someone, use a Shire Horse, the biggest in the world. The biggest Shire horse even was 220cm tall and weighed 1.5 tonnes! :charge:

Ohhhhhhh..... Ahhhhhhhh!

Well, a flaming horse would be good, but how one would light it on fire without burning themselves... hmm.

After all, you've got to pick it up with your bare hands, unless you could throw the horse then jump up into the air and light it on fire mid-flight. Now that'd be a plan. Also, I suppose these super soldiers could also mount on a donkey or something, and 'pepper' the enemy with horses from horseback then quickly retreat behind friendly lines. Right? You know, call it Mounted [Insert Unit Name].
