Fisheries Minister Jim Anderton said the squid, weighing an estimated 450kg (990lb), took two hours to land in Antarctic waters.

Local news said the Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni was about 10m (33ft) long, and was the first adult colossal squid landed intact.

One expert said calamari rings made from it would be like tractor tyres.

"I can assure you that this is going to draw phenomenal interest. It is truly amazing," Steve O'Shea from Auckland's University of Technology told local media.

Colossal squid, which are found deep in Antarctic waters, are thought to be about the same length as giant squid ( Architeutis dux ) but are much heavier.

The species was first identified in 1925, but very few specimens have been found.

The first specimen recovered intact, a 150kg (330lb) immature female, was caught on the surface in the Ross Sea near the Antarctic coast in April 2004.

'Nearly dead'

Mr Anderton said the fishermen had been fishing for Patagonian toothfish in deep Antarctic waters when the squid - which was eating a toothfish - was caught.

"The squid was almost dead when it reached the surface, and the careful work of the crew was paramount in getting this specimen aboard in good condition," he said.

The squid was frozen in the ship's hull and brought back to New Zealand for scientific examination.

"The colossal squid has just arrived in New Zealand and it is likely that it is the first intact adult male colossal squid to ever be successfully landed," Mr Anderton said.

This thread lacks the advocation of hunting whales and seals.

As discussed here... (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=79941)

Has anyone seen that show on TDC or maybe it was Animal Planet, but anyways they dropped bait lines for giant squid? They were able to photograph, via motion activated cameras, tentacles taking the prey and I believe they even hooked a tentacle once, but the squid freed himself and that camera malfunctioned.

Well I think its safe to say that global warming is the direct result of the recent increase in giant squids surfacing and their ammonia emissions.

Well I think its safe to say that global warming is the direct result of the recent increase in giant squids surfacing and their ammonia emissions.

We need to enforce a green tax on them, or a cap on their emissions.

Since we're not even sure they exist, that could be a little difficult.

Well, seeing as how global warming hasn't been proved and has tons of counter examples to it, i dont think your in a position to say that. If there was sarcasm in your statement, im sorry i read it wrong. If you werent, then im sorry you dont know the whole story.

I was using the irrational to make example of the irrational.

So years down the line when these fishermen are recalling what their biggest catches are in the dock side bar will anyone believe them?

I'm kinda surprised its red in color, I imagined that things from the depths of the ocean would be more white from the lack of sunlight.

Yes, and it's quote obviously a fake. It's about as convincingly real as the supposed pictures of the WTC having planes flown into it.

But of course! It's all a conspiracy!

The WTC wasn't felled by Al Qaeda, or Jews, or Dubya - it was self-propelled sonic kraken, jumping out of the nearby Atlantic at ridiculously high speeds, straight into the WTC.

Why you ask?

Because a company responsible for 80% of the squid fishing in the world had their offices in both of the towers.

I think we should leave these squid alone. We don't want to mess with them for a few good reasons.
