View Full Version : Indie Rock
I really am not a big Indie Rock fan and don't know that many of the smaller bands out there that haven't signed with big labels or were never that famous. I know a lot about music, bands, styles, and genres, but not that much about Indie Rock so;
If there is anyone who can suggest some good Indie Rock bands i can go look up and check out i would greatly appreciate it. (p.s. please dont mention Modest Mouse, i know they have a new album coming soon, but i think their previous ones stunk so im not buying.)

Well I'm a pretty big Indie Rock fan. Here are some of my favourite Indie bans:
Arctic Monkeys - Not everyone's cup of tea. I really like it though. From England
Bloc Party - These guys are pretty good. From England
Little Man Tate - Great band! Just released their first CD. Really good listen.
The Subways - Pretty good. If you like Bloc Party, you will like these guys.
So yeah, these should start you off. I really recommend Little Man Tate though.

Snow patrol. Not sure if that one counts, though.
that's not really indie is it? Snow patrol & Artic monkeys are not real indie if you ask me.

How are we defining Indie here? It's always seemed a rather bizarre genre to me, in that it was primarily defined by the way the music was disseminated, rather than what it sounded like.

You have a few kind of indie rock genres I believe:
1.The quite singer songwriter/folksy stuff (think Belle& Sebastian)
2. some sort of punk rock
3. some sort of goth thing
4. anything else that's new and hot (artic monkeys, snow patrol)
I don't think many of the bands that are often mentioned as 'indie' are actually on an independant label.

Too many to list that I'd recommend. But do try: Will Oldham, Mogwai, The Decembrists, The Veils, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Notwist, Sophia, Great Lake Swimmers, Gravenhurst, ...And You'll Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Sigur Ros. A more comprehensive list including less-known bands could have followed, if my ipod hadn't just died.
But really, the best thing to do if you're looking for new music is to head to the nearest record store, grab some ten random cds, and listen to them in the shop. Keep trying until you find something you like; it's one of the joys of life, discovering new gems.
Quite so. Also if you do that I can advise you to listen some of the CD's from the Nuclear Blast CD label. Have a look at their site, if you want a list of indie bands. From methal to punk,... They have quite a lot of it. From Lacrimosa to Ektomorf and from In flames to Agnostic Front.
