View Full Version : Hot fixes?

Hey EB Guys

now as always I don't want to seem like a whiny fan trying to wheedle more updates out of you, but as i understand it there are a few small bugs that could be fixed quite easily with a small fix patch. For example the farming and port buildings for the Saba and the KH general's unit being stuck in phalanx all the time. I'm not a big comp person so I don't feel comfortable trying to edit the files myself, but it sounds like these could be fixed pretty easily. So if someone could take the time to make a real quick hot fix download that would be awesome.
If it would take too long then I guess don't worry, It's just a request.
Thanks alot and as always this game rocks my world!

EB's working on a hotfix. As we speak.

The team is testing one right now. We prefer not to spam a lot of minor fixes out there as it's confusing for many players and potentially makes support a complete nightmare for us, trying to keep track of which version people are playing and having problems with. At the moment there's a CTD we're trying to track down and kill before we kick it out the door.

So what's coming is a little more than a hotfix and something less than a patch, as we'd prefer not to release anything else until the next major upgrade.

Just to pointlessly argue semantics, are you going to call it. v0.82? Might as well, unless 18 patches are expected between here and v1.0. Plus it gives the publicity feel of rapid accomplishment...

Will v.81 be save-game compatible with the new patch/hotfix you are talking about?

At this point, it's not fair calling it a hotfix. A hotfix implies a quick release after the initial release, just to take care of minor things immediately discovered. If the team decided that's not the way to go with it, that's fine, even better in my opinion, it's just not cool calling it a hotfix which makes the fans have an implied idea about what it is when it'll be out. It should just be a patch and get on with it.

We like to call it Franklin, and Franklin doesn't like noises.

Do you have any idea how many CTD's this upcoming release will fix?

I guess what I'm wondering is, is it worth it for me to wait for it before starting a campaign because it will increase stability a lot?

EB is pretty stable already, but the Rebelling City CTD is a bit more prevalent than we'd like. The primary reason for the hotfix was to fix things that DON'T cause CTD's but which are definitely bugs. We also want to test it to make sure it doesn't cause other problems.

We wanted something that would be save game compatible, but unfortunately it won't be. Frankly the v.81 release is pretty solid already, and anybody who has a major campaign underway might opt to forgo the hotfix. But we hope it will eliminate the rebel city CTD and it really helps out several factions with reported v.81 bugs (if you read all the threads, you can probably guess what most of them are). Plus there are minor tweaks to recruitment, text, and a few other things.

All of this and never having played a campaign yet. :laugh4:

A few other people seem to like it, but if your reaction has been what it has been so far, never even having played a campaign, I definitely do not look forward to the day when you start one and then let us know all of the campaign problems too.

You have to admit, Fallen has been pretty nice in the past few days. Don't push it TA.

Btw, yesterday I had my first ever reinforcement CTD. Do you know what triggers it and have you figured out a solution? All I know is the battle was crazy, it took 40 minutes, about a thousand of my men died and then snap. Good thing I can avoid the battle next time.

Out of curiousity, was the reinforcements enemy?

The reinforcement CTD was fixed by not using a given variable in the post battle triggers, called NumEnemiesInBattle. The fix involved using NumFriendsInBattle instead, combined with the estimated battle difficulty. NumFriendsInBattle may also be bugged, but we've got very few reports on it since then. There's also a possibility that battles involving more than one extra army cause problems.

If you're only having CTDs caused by the rebelling city bug, they can be solved by using one of the modified export_descr_building.txt files posted here on the forum ( bovi I think ?) which work as in for v0.80. If you dislike having a unit that can be recruited automatically you can, in the turn afterwards, swap again the txt file for the original one. This way you can continue your v081 campaign ...

Sorry, someone with hundreds of posts on this forum asking us yesterday if it "worth it" for him to finally start a campaign because we have too many CTD's previously? Trolling us. Again.

Spectral, it was not my post, but Fallen851's, whose fix is based on Marcus' initial one for 0.80. Kudos to him for it :balloon2:.

Come on now, I didn't say EB had too many CTD's in this version, I said will this hotfix fix a lot of CTD's that it will make the game so much more stable as to wait, there is definitely a difference. I know CTD's are part of the game, and I was planning on playing 0.81 and being merry, but this thread about the hotfix got me thinking.

Until you stop assuming I'm making assaults on the EB team, we will never get a long. I'm sorry if it seemed I was saying the game at too many CTD's, but that simply wasn't there.

Let's just be nice, eh?

sorry for the confusion, I remember the original being Marcu's.

BTW, and talking only for myself, I rather prefer a solution such as I'm doing - whenever there's a CTD due to rebelling cities swapping the txt files, than having some units recruitable directly from the gov building. Though I suspect the vast majority of people wouldn't agree with me :laugh4:

03-01-2007, 19:02
That is indeed the best solution, for those who care to make this manual fix each time. I would get tired of it pretty quickly though, and likely the vast majority you mention too :2thumbsup:.

May be this hotfix should be released as RAR archive also ,not only as exe file.In that case some people could decide what files to fix without loosing savegame compatibility(for example, changes in EDU.txt are save compatible in most cases)

Just to clear things up a bit Fallen...the standard .81 is very stable in my humble opinion....and I mean VERY. So you can either play now or wait...and you will have a smooth ride.

Peace.

This is an excellent idea, and I think it would be fairly easy to do if the changes are limited to only a few files.

Unfortunately, there will be quite some files involved, way to much to pick out those you think you need. And work is done on the KH general, but he seems not to be save game compatible.

And if somebody DOES decide to "pick and choose" between which files they use, and thereby breaks their game, and THEN reports bugs and CTDs?

Well on behalf of fans everywhere, let me congratulate you in advance for your personal part in delaying the next release, as the EB Team fruitlessly tries to solve your bogus problem. :smash:

Let me be absolutely clear on something. One of the major reasons why the team takes it's time in releasing patches is so we can minimize the number of official builds floating around out here. As it is, we find plenty of people reporting problems related to a file incompatibility between v.80 and v.81. And soon there will be a third version to spice up the mix. Used properly, it will clear up most of your problems. But a sizable number of people will not install it properly or will try to continue old campaigns with the new files or any number of things which we'll beg them not to do but they'll do anyway.

And we will waste our time trying to fix bogus problems. And what if - as so many of you have urged - we had released three patches and three hotfixes? Would that REALLY have made you guys any happier than the current method? Having to restart campaigns every week or two? And plenty of people here have problems with just two versions of 8.x. Think about six versions. Can you imagine what the bug report forum would look like? Gah.

That's true...

Well what you can do is install the exe from the hotfix to some random folder (other than EB folder), then pick and choose the files from the fix you want to use by copying them over to your EB folder. But don't report CTD's then, you'll make Kull angry...
