View Full Version : Total War Asia
I know people have been requesting Japan and China as possible expansion or next in line main game for the Total War series. I think a whole Asia game would be nice. In my brief stint with EU III, I thought it was cool with the absolute humongous number of countries available to play. Unfortunately, I really couldn't get into the game much. I also know that a Total War game including the whole world would probably be unrealistic but man would I like a go at a possible Total War Asia game. Just some of the nations I would like trying out:
Korean
Japanese
Chinese
Mongols
Thai
Indian
Malaysian\Indonesian
and alot more.....
Maybe around 20 or so factions would be nice. I think the weapons, soldiers and navies of the different time periods would be awesome. Who wouldn't want to use some ninjas? :2thumbsup:

Yup yup, that would be awesome indeed :)
maybe before the time of the 1st emperor that way china could have several factions in it.
But having played with ninjas in Shogun Total War I would definitelly want Japan having a similar level of technology in any Asia Total War game, selecting the right period is the toughest part.
I dont see why this couldn't be integrated into Med2 with an expansion? The koreans, chinese, and japanese were all strong powers then. A game DEVOTED to asian countries would be overkill and frankly hard to pull off with Shogun TW being the best ever TW IMO.

IMO, the current time period would be best, or perhaps 100 years earlier. Can't do an asian TW without the rise of the mongols!
Personally, I'd like to see it in the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" era. Of course, those common(?) hundred thousand men armies or even that one million-men army would have to be scaled down quite a bit.
Actually, lets just end this issue ONCE AND FOR ALL. I hope the next TW game or a series of expansions will do the following.
Start a little before Roman times and go ALL the way up to the revolutionary war. Of course you should be able to start around the time you want but I think Asia as well as the new world should be able to get to eventually. It should go all the way up to about the US revolutionary war timeframe because after that, combat drastically changed. Think about it, it could be done. For instance, they could have guns evolve with multiple upgrades to be more effective and so many other good ideas.
Holy crap, that gave me a great idea !
How 'bout a Civil War TW?! I'm going to recruit lots of "cowboys" to kill off local generals and raid cargo trains with. Mercenaries could be desert thieves and indians :laugh4:

That sounds great but it'll never work with the current AI. It'll keep popping out Hastati when it could produce F-16s just because the pilots don't have any armor or weapons and Hastati look better on paper. Or how about a sailboat trying to blockade a nuclear submarine base for no reason? OR perhaps a player 'exploiting' with a fort in the middle east on the oil resource so you can have 50 Halliburton agents camping it? Or how about a 80 year old British monarch who refuses to die while the faction heir is already 60? Or how about the leader of the mysterious land of America... hmmm... too many jokes there so I shouldn't go there.:2thumbsup:

No, really this idea fits into "Colonial TW" or "Napoleonic TW" that we've argued over. It's a subset of the eras and warfare involved there. Considering TW is expansive and always has more than 2 sides, it would be better as a part of a larger TW game. I think a colonial game could start sometime after the Reformation and going up to as late as the Zulu wars. The US Civil War would fit inside that time frame, and the game would cover the whole planet so it'd be in there.
And cowboys to kill off local generals... huh?
I thought I had posted a realistic idea for a new game for CA. A whole planet game is not possible IMO due to CPU limitations. A nice dream would have been to merge the EU III map with Total War gameplay but that will not be possible in the near future unless you could run it on a supercomputer. Think of how long a turn would take waiting for the AI? :laugh4: As it stands, I love the Total War Series and especially MTW 2 even with all it's bugs and it shows in how long it has kept my attention. This was just an idea I had for a possible future game from CA. As I said earlier, EU III is not for me. The learning curve is too high and as ugly as the graphics are, it still taxes my PC more than MTW 2 does I think due to the real-time component.

it would be cool because you would have at least 3 elephant factions:yes:

If you put Europe and Asia on the same map, great, just don't forget to add the 10 factions or so in between Europe and Asia! :2thumbsup:
Not including Indian continent factions of course.

Whoa whoa hold on, thats why I kinda stated that you have to stop SOMEWHERE in time. We can't do trench warfare with the engine (WW1) nor can we have massive troop engagements with machine guns and foxholes. We have to stop somewhere for now. Maybe they could add all of that later but not at this time.
Please no Asia stuff >.<. Don't ask me why I hate Asian history I just do.

Oh ok, they won't make an Asian game because you don't like them. *sigh*
Personally I think it would be amazing to put Europe and Asia onto the same map. REALLY re-write some history! ;-)

I think the TW engine would be ideal for a game based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Just make sure you have lots of Confucian philosophy and lavish quotes from the novel. Of course, to really get into the spirit of the thing you would also need a personal combat module...
The TW model works better on smaller rather than larger subjects. That was one of the strengths of Shogun and Viking Invasion over the larger scale games. ROTK:Total War would, unfortunately, not fall into the smaller scale model, but it could still be made to work. The trick would be to emphasize the subject matter rather than the game engine (most of the TW games are really about the game engine rather than the period they supposedly cover).
And yes, I really do miss the old KOEI ROTK games.

I agree that TW games work best on smaller scales, such as early Medieval Britain or Shogan Japan. A game focusing on Japan, China, Korea, and Mongolia would be nice, if you tried to include Europe and Asia, you have a lot of space in the middle with factions that a lot of people aren't really as interested in.

what would be nice are some mini-campaigns fought through a series of battles. more alternate reality than historical campaigns. and you get animation movies in between battles and a story line to go by with choice options during the campaign to choose to fight one battle over another.
i guess like a warhammer campaign like game.

I think the Spring/Autumn and Warring States period would be the best for a TW game as there are a lot of different units and philosophies trying to get one up on each other, and the Barbarians are quite strong, with mainly the Hun on the North and the south barbarians, one of which eventually becomes the State of Chu. So there really is quite a diversity then. What I really wish was that there to be a sort of way for the adoption of units, technology and not fix each state to a certain set of units as is the current TW games. No idea how to implement that though. :P

Asia: Total War?
Hmmmm... I would play it straight for a week or two, then I think it might hit the shelf. Medieval Asia is kinda... boring.
Now, I was thinking instead of taking everything huge scale, is there anyone aside from me who likes the idea of smaller TW games? I mean something like a 1,000 man army at the biggest. I was thinking War of the Roses kinda thing. The whole commanding a small duchy is cool, IMO. With smart AI allies, fighting other small sub-factions, and one month turns... Fun.
Back to Asia; Ninjas should not be used on a battlefield. I don't know how they were used in Shogun: TW as I never played it. *Shrugs* It never appealed to me, and I was busy with MTW and RTW then.
Damn, I can rant. :hanged:

Dude, my gf is a cambodian Blasian (Half Black, half asian) and I love the history. And hell, I had to put up with Rome. Just no more Mythical stuff like I heard Shogun was like. I never played it, MTW was my first TW game ever but I still heard stories..

I would have to disagree, nothing would make me more happy than to start off on a conquest without cheating and have it take a year or two to fully complete. Don't get me wrong, you should have an option to play a scaled down version like the Viking Invasion addon for MTW but as a whole, the grand campaign should remain huge. I want to so badly see my empire start from nothing, by not feeling rushed at all, build its way up into an elite superpower over hundreds of turns.
I would love to see a TW game covering Japan, China, Korea, Mongolia and maybe India. Having one that covers Europe AND Asia, or multiple time periods is not gonna happen given the huge amount of extra work needed for it. And no you can't do what the opening poster suggested in an expansion for M2Tw as it doesn't relate to the game at all and would require completely redone modles for everything.
I'm kinda leaning towards something asian, like what Lusted just said. Something covering the Mongol era (dupe with medieval's period, so I kinda doubt we'll see this) or ancient China (being able to build the great wall a chunk at a time on the campaign map sounds outstanding). The other thing I'd like to see is the limits on the campaign map size and factions raised substantially. Being able to have a bigmap sized map that covers all of Asia, Europe, Africa, hell even the Americas would be awesome.

Shogun is the best TW ever made. Don't talk if you don't know.

Given all the crazy weapons they invented in medieval China I am surprised CA hasn't tried it. In any case, they should.
