View Full Version : Query - General Cap?

I'm currently playing a strange game as Portugal: I took out the British Islands and gave my lands in Iberia to the Pope. Once my economy was stable, I let the computer auto-build and kept hitting "end turn" so I could fast forward to the New World.

Anyway, I noticed something strange during the process: No one was having kids! I had about 20 generals and half of them were married. Only a couple of them had potential problems like a mistress, ugly bride, or *ahem* fertility problems.

When all of my generals were over 40 without a single child, I started getting really concerned. I suspected that there may be a general-per-region cap of some sort, so I decided to ship off 10 generals to their deaths by pirates. Well, after they died, I started getting a flood of birth announcements and adoption options.

This may all have been a coincidence, but it's hard to imagine 10 married couples not consummating in their teens, twenties, and thirties--and suddenly all deciding to breed like rabbits in their 40s and even 50s. Does anyone know definitively whether there's a cap or not?

Here's another somewhat related question. I was playing as England, married my heir to the French princess, and ended up wiping them out (hey, they hit me first :sweatdrop: ). When I checked the family tree, the French princess was grayed out and she was only in her 40s. I don't check family messages closely so it could have been a natural death that I missed--but I'm suspecting that when a faction is destroyed, the princess of that faction dies whether single or married. Can anyone confirm?

Generally, the game makes it so you have about one general per region you control. There is no normal way to get around this

Has anyone found a way to mod this?

There may well be a cap. Only last night I had the chance to accept a suitable husband for one of my girls but selecting yes caused CTD. Only when I declined would the game continue

The same thing happened in my spanish campaign .. i married my prince to portuguese princess but after i destroyed portugal she died too .. and she was just 30 or so .. it's weird that they (princesses) die after their factcion is destroyed even if they are married .. is it a bug??:dizzy2:

There is definitely a boundary, but not a hard limit. The game looks at the ratio of provinces to adult male family members. If the number is too low, you start getting adoption opportunities. If the number gets too high, your family stops having children. Only when the number drops below the upper limit do new kids start being born. Any children can still come of age during that time, daughters can get married, princesses can bring in new generals, and "man of the hour" can still happen, but no new kids will be born.

In both my Spanish campaign and my Venice campaign I ran up against this. At game start I had the default family. I quickly expanded, got a few adoptions and marriages and children reaching majority. The third generation of the family was large, and as a result the fourth generation was HUGE! Of course, the fourth generation didn't have kids as a result, so I went through a long period where I had mass numbers of barren couples. Only when the fourth generation started to die off did things get a little better. There were time periods when I was down to 4 generals, because the kids weren't old enough yet and the old guys were dropping 3-5 every turn due to old age, and I can only get one adoption per turn. Of course, the fifth generation had dozens of kids, meaning the 6th generation was huge and had no kids as a result, so it happened again. 7th generation recovers, 8th generation is huge, repeat ad infinitum.

I REALLY wish there is a way to mod this. As things are now, I simply don't lose generals, because they are so important, and can't be replaced easily. If there were more of them, say twice as many, they would be a lot more expendable, and I could use them more as they should be used historically..

can the ability to train general units (line in BI) be modded in? they seem to be in the game as all factions start the campaign with one general who is no family member.

this might belong into the mod workshop - but can you tell me how to mod recruitable generals into the campaign?

I've always found your family declines and then booms, for example at one point I was down to about 5 generals (15 provinces) due to assassinations, low birth rate, inquisitions and all the usual stuff.

For the next 30 or 40 turns things steadily improved and then suddenly everybody was having kids, every couple of turns 2 or 3 male children were born and a couple of females. The number of generals in my family constantly grew as so many were coming of age so I ended up with 24 generals for 25 provinces. By the looks of things i'm going to end up with alot lot more and many still need to come of age.

These fluctuations were apparent in RTW and are just the same in M2TW, a declining family suddenly booms for no apparent reason.

If you start to get too low, you will get offers to adopt generals.

About recruitable generals. First remember that recruited Generals are not "Family Members". That being said, here is a link on how to recruit generals.
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=76323&highlight=NE+Bodyguards

I do this in my own campaigns. This does solve the problem about not having enough generals in the game, but not the hard coded limit on family members mentioned above. Of course if you have enough generals you may not care. The file you will need to modify is export_descr_buildings.txt . My suggestion is to download Lusteds Lands to Conquer mod and look at the export_descr_buildings.txt file in his mod. I don't play his mod, but he has a lot of great stuff in his mod. Search on "NE Bodyguards" and follow his pattern. Their are also generals (Mounted) for all of the factions.

You can also use a dismounted General if you are a Northern European faction. Adds a different flavor to battles with generals  The name is "NE Dismounted Bodyguards" I believe. I have also modded this into my own campaign. Good luck, and good modding. If a dismounted general exists for other non Northern European factions in the modding community I have not found it yet.

There is a mod for that already Lusted's LTC mod it allows you to recruit generals, like actual generals. Despite the fact though it takes a while before u can recruit another one, but then u can have like 20 regions which can all recruit generals and then you can just keep making them. I have 38 generals while only holding 21 regions. :smash:
