View Full Version : Excommunication
I was just wondering... does the AI get excommunicated during the campaign?

Yes, quite frequently. It all depends on how aggressive the faction is being.
Standing on the defensive against Catholics can be a good ploy - let them get excommunicated by repeatedly attacking you, then you are free to attack them without Papal restraint and maybe even crusade against them.

I have seen a few times that the excommunicated faction was reconciled after I kicked his bu took one of its settlements.
Therefore a word of advice: if you are going to take a stab at an excommunicated faction, attack multiple cities in one turn.

In my recent HRE campaign I had almost all my neighbours excommunicated. Six factions total.
Then, the Sicilian Cardinal becomes the new pope and his first act of duty was to excommunicate the Sicilians for attacking him (the Papal states). :laugh4:
Heh, France just got the big X for the second time in 10 turns. First time the pope died a turn later (darned lucky frog scum!) But then they couldn't resist blockading Zaragoza, even though the fleet I had parked in the port waiting on them had them outclassed. Silly frogs. Excommed AND sunk.
I went about 25 turns excommed after getting the X the 5th turn or so when I (as Portgugal) took out the Spanish. The miserable frogs get a 1-turn excom. Well, the first time. This time they will pay! :smash:
Ive knoticed that the main reason for excommunication is so that faction that was Exed. will be put in line for not listening to the pope after they lose 1 or 2 provinces the pope thinks they've served there time and trys to give them a chance at being a good little catholic schoolgirl... (the King has to wear that Uniform I think or the Pope gets mad)
If you kill the faction ruler, he is in hell and no longer X'd. The Pope is then ok with the new ruler. So if you want to wipe out a faction while they are X'd, don't kill their king until the end.
that's one of my strategies playing a cath faction, trying to get other cath factions excommed.
