View Full Version : My sig
I've been warned for the text I have in my sig:
I'm not intending to imply insult or judgment here but I am curious to know in order to be able to respond to your posts in an appropriate manner, so please forgive what appears to be, but in fact is not intended as, an insulting question: Are you stupid? - Helm
Someone says that this sig is offending, as it says ... according to him:
Your sig implies that those who do not agree with your opinion are stupid. That is unacceptable, please edit this.
Which is not true, read my sig again.
So I would like to know, what do you think of my sig?
Is it funny, offending, just plain stupid, or just gah
If a majority thinks it's offending I'll edit it ... or I'll give them a sense of humour
I've had this sig for a month or so now, and only by now I get a PM warning for it.

Hi Stig,
To me it's just :gah:

Nope. For me you ask if the guy is stupid to know how complex your answer can be. I mean who would explain things the same way to a 4 years old kid and to a grown adult?
Oh, by the way, I'm stupid. :dizzy2:
...
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!

Sorry for my brief post, I think I should give a more detailed opinion on the matter. I personally do not take offence at it, I am stupid after all :stupido3:, yet others who are more sensitive to these sorts of things may, so perhaps you should edit it, just to keep them, and the moderator who issued the warning, satisfied.
Hmmm, I kinda like your signature Stig, so, for what it's worth, I am not offended at all.
Did the moderator warned you because he thought your sig breaks the Org rules or did you get the warning after a member hit the "report bad post" button saying that he felt offended? Anyway, if you are really upset about it, it might be better trying to sort it out with the moderator in question. Or you can adress yourself to our benevolent ruler, TosaInu.
On the other hand, if the staff says your sig violates the rules, I'm afraid you'll have to obey the masters :whip:

As I see it, someone might quite easily take offense (even though it's not intended), therefore: don't do it.
It's also more appropriate to discuss this with the moderator in question in private.
I know m8, but I just wanted to know if people see it as offensive, next to that it's aimed at someone you don't know anyway (and I doubt if he visits the org ... and knowing him even if he did he wouldn't care)
...it's aimed at someone you don't know anyway (and I doubt if he visits the org ... and knowing him even if he did he wouldn't care)
A sig aimed at another gamer is not acceptable. It doesn't matter if third parties don't find it offensive. You are calling him stupid and such ad hominem attacks are against Org rules.
For what it's worth, I think the M2TW MP forums have been a bit of "Wild West" part of the Org until Hosakawa Tito took on the role of moderator. For those who don't know, Hosakawa Tito is a veteran Org staffer and one of those people for whom  embodies what the Org stands for. I would listen to him. There's a new Sheriff in town.

Anyway I'll edit the sig ... what I don't get is why I only get warned for it now, a month after I first used it

It has nothing to do with having a sense of humor.
From a backroom thread, Adrian said it best:
We can't all be friends, nor do we want to be, but we should be able to engage in debate without stooping to personal attacks.
Verbal horseplay among good friends is a common practice that most of us engage in. However, directed at people we don't know well or get along with, can cause hard feelings, arguements, and fights. There is a time and place for verbal horseplay, unfortunately, the MP forum is not that place. Adrian sums up the reason above. There are tensions and divisions within the MP community who post on this forum, not everyone are friends, let alone good friends. I am responsible for trying to maintain a civil atmosphere in the MP forum so everyone can debate without things getting personal.
If a majority thinks it's offending I'll edit it
This isn't a popularity contest. I asked for your compliance to a reasonable request in a private pm. I expected the courtesy of a private reply/discussion in return. You're in complete control of the situation, what you decide to do next will determine what my course of action will be.

Anyway I'll edit the sig ... what I don't get is why I only get warned for it now, a month after I first used it
Thank you Stig:bow: I have only been moderator in this forum for about 2 weeks. I have had "bigger fish to fry", you're not the only sig I have had to deal with, not to mention the SA clan, and just trying to get a feel for the MP forum community.
This isn't a popularity contest.
I know, but I can't win any argument against you if I don't know if people actually consider my sig non-offending, so I had to ask, after that I would PM you (as I simply couldn't bring any arguments before that)

For what it's worth i didn't think it was offensive, but considering it was once aimed at a real person I can see why it would be seen as inappropriate to use it as a sig.

I am said person, seeing as that statement was directed at me. I certainly am not offended nor do I mind, although it's a shame Stig didn't quote what I said to Helm before that. Bah!
This is an interesting situation though, seeing as I got warned for referring to Stig as 'Stiggles' and 'Stigglet' because he may have construed it as being offensive. Not that he actually complained, but he might have been offended.
Two-way warnings, eh?
seeing as I got warned for referring to Stig as 'Stiggles' and 'Stigglet'
Let them withdraw those warnings.
You know I can't be bothered, besides everyone calls me Stiggles and Stigglet

Who would do such a thing?

I came up with 'Stiggles', I believe PG was the first one to say 'Stigglet'. A limited number of .commites call Stig those names, mostly Nudists (members of the Naked Fanatics clan; see siggie).
@ Stig
Meh. I just now noticed that you changed your sig there Mr. Stiggin's. Personally, I found the old quote to be hilarious, nor would I have known that it came from the Org forums, NOR would I necessarily have known it was aimed at another Orgah. I guess I can see why it should be removed and the reasons for it... but personally I don't agree. In my view a reasonable individual would see that and know that it's a sig quote, and know it's not directed at them.
@ Hosakawa-san

I gotta disagree, there's always room for humor, always. Then again I'm here as a newly minted former junior member going up against a number of mods and senior members here on this. Some mods moreso than others tend to rule with an iron fist. Guess I'll just say that I've seen a fair few number of forums or subforums for other gaming sites that literally had the spirit crushed right out of them for this reason. Please don't misunderstand, I'm not saying you will and I know nothing about you or your mod style. I've just seen enough actions by overzealous mods in general trying to stamp out humor that's harmless, at least in my view. /shrug :2cents:
I am responsible for trying to maintain a civil atmosphere in the MP forum so everyone can debate without things getting personal.
A very sincere "good luck." You're going to need it. :sweatdrop: In my humble view the key will be to encouraging good discussion and discouraging the hollow arguing, bashing, and flaming. But I'm sure you already knew that... I've just seen a large number of what start out as good threads hijacked, bad threads that take a very positive turn closed, and threads summarily locked with no reason given. It's really discouraging.
Again best of luck.

Firstly, that comment was made at the Pond, not the .org. And secondly, Stig and I are thorough-bred .commites. :2thumbsup:

I have no idea what you mean by "the Pond"... but the quote is still hilarious. I am very happy for you though, that you and Stig are apparently... horse friends? :inquisitive: :beam:

My absolute first, immediate, knee-jerk thought on loading up that link was "wretched hive of scum and villany".
The pics are hilarious.
