Yes, it's true! Barack Obama's white mothers great-great-great-great......grandfather owned slaves!

I hate to see what Hillary's line looks like.

Does this mean he can expect an apology from himself sometime soon?

Geneology searches on political figures seem to be all the rage now. Sharpton-Thurmon a few days ago and now Obama.

BTW MM, you need to register to see the article.

One has to wonder why this is news.

One wonders why anyone would care.

It's not his fault what his greatx9 grandfather did. Making this a political issue is just stupid.

Are we going to make an issue for every "European" American because they attacked the American Indians?

For those who want more details here is a link (http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/nationworld/politics/bal-te.obama02mar02,0,3453027.story) to the original Baltimore Sun article (no regis. required). It also refers to slave-owning ancestors of other candidates.

Why should we inherit the sins of our fathers ?

Why should we inherit the sins of our fathers ?

I agree.

Unfortunately in the Universities in the states this is what is taught to incoming freshmen. Guilt for our Fathers 101 is required. What they fail to understand is that imposed guilt and understanding are two totally different things.

Why should we inherit the sins of our fathers ?

Pillar #1 of american culture (if we can be said to actually have such). Self-reinvention, despite your ancestor's station in life.

This new information, added to the facts that his middle name is Hussein and his last name rhymes with Osama conclusively indicates that he should not run. in fact, it is an insult that he is allowed to run. As proof of America's resolve he should be interred in Guantanamo. It's obvious he was trying to derail your great nation.

So we've been "on-track" all this time? LoL.

Of course, are you insinuating it is not?

Why do you hate freedom?

Sounds like Obama is being railroaded.

A lot of Americans are feeling we aren't on the right track.

Why do you hate freedom?Because we are being trained by the media to do so.

Puns aside, whether the motive is "sins of the father" or "reinvention", they are both bogus. In either case, the offense is so far removed from Obama as to be insignificant regarding who Obama is or isn't. It is interesting trivia at best and nothing more.

And with that, I'd better get my caboose out of here while I still.

Hecks no. You're Irish, I'm half. Ergo: I half got it. :laugh4: Enough to play with you, mate. No harm, no foul.

But now I wanna do a geneological search on you and your ancestors. a'fore you know it, I'm sure we'll find we've ALL owned slaves, or dominated Asia, or upped the british, or dissed the french; or been scoundrels, pirates, diplomats, heros, Guys-who-have just-played-along-to-get-by and feed their families.

In america, the promise has been: "no matter your dad was a scoundrel, you can be a hero..." or whatever; president, CEO, janitor, mailman, certified nursing assistant - you are what you say (and do) you are.

It'd be a shame to lose that in the interest of marketing/politics. In my opinion.

Wow, so Obama is a hidden Muslim and his nth ancestor owned slaves. What else have we got?

Did he ever come near a swift boat? :idea2:

I'm going to go out on a limb and say everyone has ancestors who, at some point in time, owned slaves. Be that in the American south or longer ago.

1 out of 64 of his great-great-great-great grandparents was a slave owner...
and?

I pretty sure that a few americans are the byproducts of slaves and their owners. Does that make them guilty of slavery or a victim of it six generations removed? I'm pretty sure that they would be a spectrum of wasp to african american to asian after six generations.

The part that bugs me is from the Baltimore Sun article:

The records - which had never been addressed publicly by the Illinois senator or his relatives -...

The wording implies that Obama was trying to cover it up.

In light of this expectation, I myself must issue an apology to all the Org since I have received a few HoF awards without full disclosure of my ancestry. In my first posts here I failed to acknowledge that one of my ancestors 150 years ago was a horse thief. :shame: Tosa, please strip my account of all awards and demote me to Junior Member.[/sarcasm]

And I confess that one of my ancestors was disrespectful towards a neanderthal neighbor once. "Low brow" he called him. In context, a shameful epithet. I am sorry.

Dubya proves it even works the other way round. "No matter your dad was a hero...".

According to my brother, Sen. Obama has already disqualified himself for office.

My brother's rationale is:

ANYONE who actually wants to be President of the United States (and thereby putting your entire family into the media proctoscope zone), by declaring such an intent, demonstrates themselves to be a power hungry whack-job an hence undeserving of the office.

His version would have us collectively decide on a qualified person and SENTENCE them to serve for 4 years -- figuring that only somebody who loathed the office would discharge its duties with the proper spirit.

Sadly, the grain of truth underlying my brother's sarcasm is a bit saddening.

Reminds me of my favorite TV ad:

"Okay, first of all... I'm not 100% in love with your tone right now..."

He must have read (and really liked) "Le Sceptre du Hasard" (The Scepter Of Chance) (1968) by Gerard Klein!
