I've been on record several times saying that people are idiots when it comes to risk assessment, and I've also shown that when it comes to polls and statistics, I'm a bit of a poll smoker. So imagine my pleasure at finding the two great tastes combined in the NSC's What Are the Odds of Dying (http://www.nsc.org/lrs/statinfo/odds.htm) web site.

Looks like heart disease (http://www.nsc.org/lrs/statinfo/odds_dying.jpg) is the big kahuna, with lightning, earthquake and fireworks discharge trailing the pack ...

Remember, your overall odds of dying are one in one. It's the how that's up for grabs ...

I didn't realize cancer was so big. I knew it was high but not that high.

Falling is a surprise as well.

Every cell in your body is a potential traitor. Watch them carefully. Once they've eaten through their telomeres, it's as though you moved your stack out of a city with no church or tavern. Oh for a cellular no-upkeep militia!

Really, I think the reason heart disease, cancer and stroke are so high up the list is that people are living much longer these days. Scarlet fever and festering wounds don't get a fair shake anymore.

I'm just ticked off at those people with the secret of immortality.:whip:

They all took it with them to the grave! :skull:

It would be interesting to see the graph compared with one of other countries. Suicide looks worryingly high to me.

If I die of natural causes it's probably going to be a heart attack, runs in both sides of the family.

Eh, I'm guessing I'm not going to die from a freak accident. The war against the robots will do--or any war in which I am the crazy, drinking old man confined in a tall building with a good ol' Dragunov.
Speaking of which, I need to get a Bowie knife.

People seem to live a long time in my family (on both sides). Lucky me.

They do have a tendency to end up a little... odd though. I thought my great grandma (who died in her late 90s) had rather lost it with age, but apparently she'd been like that as far back as anyone could remember.

I will die in my sleep....unlike the screaming passengers in my car.

Ever think of letting someone else drive?

I read today some blind man from Brittan is flying to Australia… Now flying with a wingman is one thing…but how about the landing?
