The unit is in the process of being reworked. Those guys will probably be recruitable as a unit, but there will be an early and a late pontic bodyguard that haven't been created yet.

They will be getting some, although you can now recruit Galatian Kuarothoroi & Lavotuxri cavalry in your capital.
The problem with Pontos though is that compared to other factions they don't seem to have any elite units. By most sources they seemed to copy fighting styles & tactics from their neighbours, but also use their neighbours as soldiers.
One thing though that we might do when we eventually go back and revise our factions, is to perhaps make more regionals available to Pontos or even some almost semi-factional troops as well. Another thing is to perhaps lower the MIC level for a few units. Although, Pontos is supposed to be a hard faction to play.
Historically, Pontos had a good relationship with the Seleukids and marriages between the royal families weren't uncommon. However, the RTW AI is programmed to prioritize going after the human player (after rebels), so having Arche Seleukeia coming after you is a harsh reality any Pontic player has to face (on Hard & Very Hard).

Is this restricted to .81a or are they recruitable in .81 too? and what about in Galatia itself? An EB member mentioned that the recruitment issues were fixed for pontos in .81, i guess not.
edit: version # correction
Really looking forward to Pontos once all there issues are complete and what not, A while back I read a book(called The Last King) about Mithradates Eupator (Mithridates VI) of Pontos while the Romans were trying to conquer it, and every time he was defeated he'd form another army and try again. Really made me like Pontos for this determination, especially since according Wiki, and the book he was considered one of Romes most formidable foes.

That should just be a 0.81a fix elthore. It slipped out of 0.81, but we got it in the hotfix.
Was that a good read Rilder? I know it is historical fiction, but I saw it a few years ago and was curious. That is a fair bit later than we start off though. There is a lot of fertile ground here for stuff set around this time - I'd love for EB to be the starting place that motivates or captivates someone with one of our factions or generals that ultimately would lead to some new historical fiction. Caratacos' next image should be enough to spark something like this in and of itself.

Yea it was a real good book, around the beginning it has soom scythed chariots saving the day (not vs romans) and later tells how they failed versus the Romans, its all in his sons viewpoint to, so its like this Young kids growing up while watching his father fight these battles and how Mithradates took poisons daily cause he was so afraid of asassaination.
Hopefully it doesnt spoil it to much :P
that sounds like an interesting book, its not too fiction though is it?
thanks for the reply teleksos...btw, 15k posts? yikes, the letters on your keyboard must be worn down!

That book DOES sound really interesting. I'll have to look for it. I've loved Pontos since vanilla for some god awful reason. Maybe I secretly love getting owned by the Seleukids or something...I dunno...:smash:

Well didn't pontus recruit armenia's "imitation legion" guys, forget their name, during their wars with rome? So let them have that unit too, that'll give them a good sword armed units that should really help their armies out *I already modded this in for myself*.

We definitely will have a thorakitai for them before too much longer. It would be nice to make it a little more eastern looking than the others, but the model would have to be reworked, and we just don't have time or manpower for that.
I refrained from commenting about the immitation legionaries, thought i'd be too off-topic, Fondor must have picked up my thoughts!
I got two questions, maybe someone can answer:
are those units already in EB, for Armenia?
and whats their deal, were they actually immitating legionaries?
it seems more plausible for them to be immitating the nearby galatians, or to simply hire them

They werent imitating anyone. They would throw javelins before they charged with their swords. When romans saw this, they "assumed" armenians were imitating their legions.

Indeed, as artavazd states the Romans when facing enemies who fought in a similar manner as them (fairly armored infantry with javelins, swords & shields) they assumed they imitated their legionaries, even though research has shown this style of fighting was sometimes invented in an area before contact with Romans.
However, it is noteworthy that during the First Mithradatic War the Pontic army was mentioned as being armed in a Macedonian manner, that is pikes & cavalry. But from the Second Mithradatic War onwards the mainstay were "imitation legionaries" or Thureophoroi/Thorakitai armed troops.
There was a big discussion if imitation legionaries were to be included, but they were not.

Incidentally, shouldn't the Kappadocian cavalry (Katpatuka Asabara, IIRC) have a bit higher armour value than the other two "Persian" medium cavalry types (Mada Asabara and the Hai equivalents) ? They've got those full-lenght scale leg protectors on top of the helmets and cuirasses the other two sport, after all.
