All right. Before I speak with TosaInu about the idea, I first want to find out if there's enough interest to warrant it:

Who here would be interested in the Main Hall having a separate sub-forum dedicated to guides for factions from the various mods (XL, BKB, MedMod, etc.)? And if such a sub-forum were created, would you be willing to write up guides for those factions that you're familiar with?

I most certainly approve Martok, it might stop my countless number of defeats at the hands of my enemies in XL! Unfortunately, however, I am way too noobish in M:TW XL to write guides. Sorry.

I'm hardly an expert, but I'll be glad to help in any way I can with XL guides, as that's all I play anymore.

Good to hear from you UltraWar. The Republic of Genoa has been missing the presence of its Consul.

I would be very interested and to help things along, I've started an XL Volga-Bulgar guide.

I am not bothered. What I AM bothered about is how I'm being discriminated against by not being allowed to vote! You're a racist, a sexist and a specieist!

Also, I think you need to shorten the flood control time...4 minutes (or whatever it is) is damn annoying...

Don't mean to insult, but the reason you can't vote now is because of messages like these. You have a postcount of 71 but still a junior member. If you start making constructive posts instead of complaining in random threads, you'll be a full member in a matter of days.

I don't necessarily disagree, but that's up to TosaInu -- and you're certainly free to PM him if you like. ~:)

Also, not to pick on you, but.... To be honest, I've noticed that quite a few of your posts have been rather spam-like in nature, Cazaric. To be fair, I've also noticed you've been better about that the last few days or so, but your earlier posts still make you look like you're not yet ready for full membership. If you continue to behave like you have been this week, you'll be promoted soon enough -- and you'll be bestowed with the reduced flood control enjoyed by us regular members.

But I digress. I appreciate the responses so far, guys! Participation will be crucial if this endeavour is to succeed.

I voted yes - would love to help, but have no experience whatsoever with XL. I could cheer wildly from the sidelines, I suppose.....if that helps....

I believe Lord Cazaric intended the comment to be tongue in cheek, he was simply pulling your collective legs, as with his 8,000 steppe cavalry and various peasants vs 50,000 mongols claim, this is one big joke! Am I right sir? am I right? :wink3:

yup, I kinda expect something like this, now that I'm getting familiar with the guy...

I voted no. But it is just because I'm way to green on the games, and am not in the mod yet, as I haven't "finished" the vanilla one. I haven't stepped out of the viking campaign map in MTW:VI yet and it will probably be my heir who will start a campaign in "early"! :shame:

But I'm not against the creation of such guides. Just not intersted in those guides. (yet?)

Great idea and I'd be happy to help with some XL factions although I'm not sure everyone would agree with my tactics!

I also voted no by the way. I have a few reasons for this, the main being that I answered truthfully that I'm "not interested", some other reasons include:

1) You may as well call it the XL Factions Guide forum, as it will probably be all about XL, and not a lot else. When the forum fills with XL related faction guides, it will appear as if the .org is almost promoting XL (rhetoric alert). There are a lot of other mods out there, but they rarely get a mention.

2) Any guides for mod factions would be better placed in the forum(s) specific to the mod in question, and not in the MTW single player forum.

3) I can forsee a situation where every player is using XL and posting about XL. There are about three XL threads at the top of this page. This can be offputting to vanilla players, especially newer vanilla players that will not know what "XL" is and get confused when reading XL related threads. I feel that this mod could end up with de facto status if it continues to be pushed in this way.

I would be all for the creation of a subforum in the MTW Mods forum, to draw the XL threads away from the main hall.

Well, you definitely have a point there. When I joined, I was all confused by all those unknown faction names! :-) but having guides about XL factions in the XL mod forum should be okay...

The thing is that there are no sub-forums for the respective mods (PMTW excepted) in which new guides would have a place - all which exists for the mods in the Engineers' Guild is some kind of neverending thread (XL, MedMod, BKB...) dealing with all aspects of the mod, and although there have been some guide posts, it would be decidedly jammed if upcoming faction guides would have to be out in there.

It might be a better idea indeed to create such a sub-forum over at the Engineers' Guild, but even creating a sub-forum in the Main Hall wouldn't equal "pushing" the XL mod IMHO. There are players who would like to share their mod experiences while not writing about XL at all (me, for instance); anyone who isn't particularly interested in the mods could still stay away from the sub-forum. To be honest I don''t quite understand the problem here. As things are now, players who mainly use mods can't contribute fully to debates which have ever focused on vanilla, so why not give them some room for further discussion about mod campaigns? One thread per mod seems somewhat unfit for such a purpopse.

edit: those everannoying typos....

Sure I'd say it's no problem at all, if they can be "regrouped" in some way so that "specific to a mod" thread are not lost in others, and vice versa!

Yes, it was meant to be tongue in cheek, but you're wrong about the Mongols thing.

There were only 12,000 Mongols and I had a mix of byzantine infantry and kataphraktoi in there too!

Please notice that, if I were allowed to vote, I would vote for "I'm VERY interested, and I would try to add my little knowledge and experience"

Also the idea of a sub-folder for the XL-Guides sounds good in my ears.

I don't think its a kind of problem for new players, when the guides are marked as "XL-guide"

Also I think it would be good to mention that it would be better to be able to stuff all of the mod faction guides somewhere else rather than have 20 individual threads get started in here and have them clutter everything up.

My opinion is similar to Galagros'. Since I only play XL these days, it would be useful, but I'm afraid I won't be able to offer a lot of wisdom and knowledge.. just some basic starting tactics for small factions such as the Scots.

As the person who sort of started all this, I have suddenly realised that I hadn't posted!! My thoughts were that many people - including me - will have been tempted to try a mod, but wanted an insight to the new factions and other aspects of the game. By putting these in a sub forum, it will have plenty of visibility and hopefully help people when they try a mod- it will probably help attract other people to try a mod as well.
I see no reason to limit it to XL - I would be just as interested to hear about other mods as well.
As for my contribution, I am happy to post my thoughts on my XL experiences and intend to finish off the Teutonic thread that I began. I make no great claim to my ability - I intend to post in a warts and all style, sharing my mistakes as well as my sucesses.:2thumbsup:

What about a subforum in the MTW Guides (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=47) forum? That way it would be in with the existing guides for the vanilla game?

Another (better) way would be be to move the guides to the single player categories for each game, that way they'd be easier to find and refer to.

Basically something like this example:

The Guild > Medieval Totalwar > Single Player > Main Hall
The Guild > Medieval Totalwar > Single Player > MTW Guides
The Guild > Medieval Totalwar > Single Player > Mod Faction Guides

I already discussed that idea with Froggy, and we agreed that such a sub-forum was better off either here in the Main Hall or the MTW Modding Forum. I also heard back from Blind King of Bohemia, and he feels it would be better that the sub-forum were here in the Main Hall. Since apparently XL is the only "large" MTW mod (aside from our hosted mods P&M, SW, and HTW) that generates a significant amount of discussion -- and that most of that discussion already occurs here in the MH -- that this would be the best place for it. So any way you look at it, the Main Hall is probably where the sub-forum would go.

I don't know about that. I see what you're saying, but I think that overall the Guides are probably better situated where they're already at. Their current location makes them easy to find without having to dig through one or more "sub-menus". Besides which, it would make Frogbeastegg's and Kekvit Irae's jobs that much more difficult -- and I'd just as soon not risk angering their Ladyships more than can be helped. ~;)

So I suppose the guides forum will be under the Single player forum? i.e. here:

The Guild > Medieval Totalwar > Single Player > Mod Faction Guides

I'm not sure you can do this...

The Guild > Medieval Totalwar > Single Player > Main Hall > Mod Faction Guides

As that would be a "sub sub" forum. I don't know if that's possible (TosaInu will know if it is).

Personally I would have gone for the following:

The Guild > Medieval Totalwar > Main Hall > Mod Faction Guides

This would work how the Watchtower/Wt Backroom combination currently works. Instead of having a Single Player category (in reality a forum) that does nothing, it would instead have the main hall first and foremost, with the Mod Factions Guides forum inside that.

Having played the XL mod for many many moons I would happily give back to this forum with any helpful knolwedge i can impart.

My comment thus far is that most of the faction guides already at the org pretty much cover the main factions, I mean there are some unit changes and subtleties with mods, but i think what might be most beneficial is if the forum was dedicated to introduced factions via a mod (volgar bulgars, Armenia).

The Guild > Medieval Totalwar > Single Player > Mod Faction Guides
I think this would be the most likely scenario. My feeling is that this would probably be the best in terms of ease of usage.

I agree this would work well also. However, I believe TosaInu intends to keep the Singleplayer category. Hence, why I said your first "path" is the most likely.

All that said, we're putting the cart before the horse here. First, we have to see if there's enough interest in this forum. If there is, I still have to try and convince Tosa -- which probably won't be an easy task. :sweatdrop:
