Hi guys, i just wanted to ask who of you managed to reach age of Marian reforms plaing as Romans? I played several roman campaigns but i was always stopped by CTD :furious3: My best is year 217.

And maybe one more question, is it possible to capture the great desert province of Sahara?

1) I have but I edited the prerequisites so I got them in 200BC

2) it is, but whats the point? (the city is way down the bottom left corner of the map if you want to try...)

Thanks i know where it is, only i was not sure if this location is "reachable" i sent there my army but could not get close enough. I will try again now.

Actually it is not possible to capture the Sahara province..... at least that's what I was told when I asked that same question.

Kugutsu

Really? Did they put a landblock or something round it then? I thought the team had decided against that path, but just made it very remote and pointless, so the AI wouldnt find it, and the human player wouldnt bother, but still could if they wanted.

I'm pretty sure that it is completely surrounded by the "impassible desert" terrain, if it's not I am definently conquering it. You can take about half of the EB world's landmass with one city.

Kugutsu

but what for? just so you can see the map being filled in? I dont even think it has any useful resources to speak of to make it worthwhile except from an aesthetic point of view. Each to their own, I suppose... You might be better off sending a diplomat down and bribing the place. They walk faster than armies, and cost less to maintain...

Yes! I love seeing the map covered in my faction colour. There is someting satasfying about adding a huge piece of land to you empire. However, I am really quite positive that the Sahara can't be conquered, the settlement in the map's corner is of no historical significance, and the character inside of it never even existed.

Kugutsu

It did exist. It was the location of an important salt mine. Heodotus mentioned it, I believe. Whether the character there existed or not I dont know.

I havent tried to go there, but I reckon the team probably did leave a path open. I also dont think its possible to make any settlement totally unconquerable. Theres always the move character cheat which can teleport an army down there...

Heodotus? isnt it Herodotus? I dont know just asking...

No path to it. Leaving a path was talked about, but in the end it was sealed. The only way to take it is to cheat.

And yes, I have reached the Marian Era, the Imperial Era too (with alterations to the script). I'm currently in 130BC and fighting for Media and Northern Germania.

It looks like you're right. Terhazza was the site of some important salt mines in the Sahara. Funny, as it seems to be in the middle of nowhere. As for the character, Gisgo was a fairly common Numidian name, so it woudn't surprise me if he was a randomly named general...

Yes Herodotus is correct, I am assuming it was just a typo.

It was a typo. I posted that at about midnight last night, so apologies for any confusion. I blame lack of sleep.

Have you the bug too that all existing roman barracks in Italy are permanent 100% damaged after Marian reform?
I can build all Troops in them but they show 100% damage...if you repair them they next turn still 100% damaged....i hope the game dont want from me that i tear all barracks in Italy and build them much years again? and if yes...can you add the barracks after tear them down to the City´s? what is to do to do it?

That's no bug, it's a feature!.

Marian and Imperial MICs are in their complex, there is no way to uprgrade a polybian MIC to become a marian MIC. To prevent that players can train both, marian and polybian units at the same we have script that damages the old MIC every turn after the reforms.

At some point we planned to have script that additionally places a marian MIC in all italain provinces after the reforms but don't know if this wa ever realised or dropped.

oh sh.. :laugh4:

so i must live with the thing forever...or tear them down and rebuild than? (this would take many ig years with no Units) since the one that i builkd now outside of Italy going not damaged...and this one in Italy that was Lv 4 and now Upgrade to 5 stays intact too....strange

Whaaaa...? I could swear I spent a bunch of time in 0.81 going over the marian MIC drop script to fix an error. Schatten, are you saying you can't recruit any of the marian units? Do you see a new barracks in your building list?

The Polybian MICs and the Marian MICs are two different buildings. The one that gets damaged is the Polybian one. Tear it down, it isn't needed any more.

Nono, i can recruit them and the old polybian Units all disappear, thats not the problem, the problem is that the MiC´s are permanent damaged (to avoid the recruit of polybian Units if i have understood correct....but at other side, who will still recruit polybian Units if he has the much better Marian?)

The point is, if you have a Empire that is necessary for Marian (for me now 60 Provinces) you have autobuild on for the City´s....now as the MiC´s permanent damaged you have to set autobuild for all Italian City´s with polybian MiC´s off or the AI try to repair them every turn (und wastes Money)...this is really annoying after some time.

MarcusAurelius...hmm i build my Marian Units in Lv 5 Polybian MiC´s, they are permanent damaged but Unit recruitment works well...sure you can tear them down and rebuild but its needs years to rebuild them to Lv 5 and Hill´s of Money....a bit annoying that they dont go simply damaged like the old Camillain MiC´s and after Repair works as the new one without tear them down.

MarcusAureliusAntoninus

Wow, I didn't think anyone used autobuild for EB...

EDIT: No insult intended. It just seems like it would be harder playing that way.

So what the heck is the point of this town in the middle of no where if you arnt allowed to reach it?

Does EB assign the rebel capitol or it is random because if it is assigned we should assign this city we cannot reach as the rebel capitol ... I have read elsewhere that this city has a tendency of creating some unusual armies and by placing it where we cannot reach it then it will never become an issue.

I'm really curious too. I suppose there must be a reason but I'm scratching my head at the moment trying to figure out what it is.

And why go through the trouble of placing a character there as well? Is there a reason for that?

Does it have something to do with endless rebels spawning and trekking across the desert?

Or is it a distraction for the AI since it's attracted to rebel cities?

You mean the one in the sahara? I believe its just there to allow the map to work out, so they can have the area were the saba are, and the provinces farther down the nile.

At least the AI.

So no one will conquer it. Historically no one did conquered it. The logistics of sending an army across the desert would have made it an almost impossible venture. With little or no reward at the end, it wouldn't even be worth the effort.
Someone argued that even the province of Arabia on the peninsula should be made impassable for armies. And that it's capital be made unconquerable. It wold be more logical not to have the AS or Ptolies cross the desert to get on eachothers throats, but take the long way skirting the desert.

Only Alexander the Great crossed a desert with an army on his return trip from India. It was one of the most grueling journeys ever taken by an army. Luckily he had already conquered Persia since the army that reached more hospitable territory wasn't in any shape to fight a war afterwards.

Sahara is not meant to be conquered as no one did. Unfortunately we cannot properly show the logistical aspect of war so this is a different approach to the matter. The Arabian interior province might be reworked so it is also unconquerable. MTW2 luckily has Impassable terrain.

As for the character, he is there as a "condition" for the script to trigger a few things I think.

Interesting, So basically it was a creative fix for a a hardcoded terrain issue.
I can rest easy now :beam:
