View Full Version : Did you ever have a Legion drown?

Well I have ... and all because of a little band of rebels. Here is what happened a small group of rebels spawned where they always do just to the east of Atrium, I happened to have a legion regrouping there so I thought great and moved them to engage ... they were deployed just south of a lake, north east of the rebels. I also had a mobile reserve stationed in Rome that I brought to bear they engaged from the south ... this pushed the rebels to the north. So now the battle started for real with my cavalry army to the south ... and my legion, still by the lake now south east of the rebels. My cavalry army was the primary assault force so the legion came up as my reinforcements.

HOWEVER, the AI deployed my reinforcements IN the lake ... and as they entered the battle each unit proceeded to drown. An entire legion dead!

Now I think this is not without historical precedence ... I believe in WWII a Soviet Division was sunk as it crossed a frozen lake and was engaged by Finnish Artillery that caused the ice to crack and so many died in a similiar fashion. But, as far as RTW is concerned this was a first for me.

:wall:

PS ... I have (had) only two legions ... so half of Rome's might just went to the bottom of this lake.

:sweatdrop:

I have chased skirmisher cavalry into the sea before, where they drowned. That was quite amusing. :laugh4:

I've had people fall off bridges an drown, but not that spectacular fate like yours.

I once started a custom battle in the MP community mod only to find that the entire battlefield was water :fishbowl: .

So who won? I suppose the smaller army in manpower was killed off before the bigger one and so could claim victory!

I had an army that decided to play Omaha Beach. 20% of my army started on land though, but the swimmers died and I was hopelessly outnumbered then.

I am sorry to say that I cannot remember. Anyway, everyone drowned at the same moment the map was loaded, before I could hit "start battle".

one of my infantry captains was literally neck deep in a river and he still didn't drown. I guess some units know how to swim. :D

One time there was a group of fleeing enemies running parallel to a river. I told three groups of cavalry to chase them down. One group ran straight into the river and kill about 80 of them. The other two groups walked about a hundred feet behind the enemies until they left the map.

A tactic I adopted after the war with the Arverni as the Aedui was to basically just let the Romans try and fight me on a bridge so that the Romans would just jurl themselves into the water and die. It was quite realistic.
