...a 30 unit army?

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v191/p.grigorakis/30.jpg

Well, ok, not a 30 unit army, more like 30 units in the field. I had just conquered Byzantion, when I saw a small Pontic force (507 vs my 830) of Pantodapoi approaching. Nikaia had a full stack of Pantodapoi, a couple of Thureophoroi, 3 Akontistai and 2 slingers. I attcked the small force and it retrated towards Nikaia. It did look like it was close enough for the garrison to help so I attacked again. Turns out it was quite close. I said what the heck, I have an elite veteran army and they have crappy units. I was going to rush in on the small army, then reorganise and face the larger one. I click start battle and I see the small army deployed and the larger army by the red line but all its units were on the field! Is that supposed to happen?

Anyway, here are the results.

That should have been a heroic victory though. I mean, it can't get any better than this. They were twice as many men. I also have to bitch about not getting any command stars out of this. When assaulting Byzantion I faced (with the same army) 1 6-star general and 4 pantodapoi...1/4 of my size and I got 2 stars. For this, I get nothing? :inquisitive:

the army strength bar has you in favor of winning the battle
you really only get heroic victory/kick ass war traits when you win a few battles when you ratio is against you

I faced a battle, as KH, that pitted two full stack armies of Epirotes against my one full stack. I didn't expect the 2nd stack to arrive for the battle as reinforcements, but lo and behold, they arrived and I was totally surrounded. Luckily the reinforcement army was most skirmishers, so my small contingent of Hippeis destroyed most of them while my hoplites, especially my spartans and general held off the phalanxes of the main epirote force. The end result was roughly 3000 dead epirotes, to my 250 dead. (large settings btw) Needless to say, I got my first heroic victory that day and their back was was broken. The only reason they exist today, with one city, is because I want them as a buffer against the Romani. :whip:

I faced a unit of 205 Epirote Thorakitai :help:
They defeated my first assault but were destroyed on the second try.

I've seen the AI run around with 20+ unit stacks that require you to scroll to see all the units.

In the Enemy army info scroll it only shows 9 units line, so it seems like a 22 unit army but its only 20

Thought I saw 20+ stacks. But I never bothered to count, since I won anyway.

But pretty cool to see darius 3rd sized armies.

In RTR I once forgot to move a Macedonian army in Asia minor and it was surrounded by eight Seleucid armies, three of which were full stacks. Must have been like 80 units. Of course I have always played with huge unit size and at the time had an ancient coal powered pc which didn't even meet RTW's minimum requirements, so the battle took over four hours (a frame every two and a half seconds maybe). The Seleucid armies consisted mostly of crap, so I won with a furball formation. It was nice to see their three scythed chariot units run amok in the crowded battlefield.

Woooow :sweatdrop: most I've actually faced in battle was about 1.5 stacks simultaneously.

It is... an illusion. No really, there are nine units per row when you look at an enemy army, so what you are looking at and thinking is a full stack, is actually eighteen units. The two units on the third row makes it up to twenty.

With a captain? captains always take up a unit and you protect it.

About half my force was horse archers. It is true that the Getai horse archers are great units. But you have to spend a lot of time building up their experience to make them as effective as they were in that battle. Newly recruited ones would have been slaughtered. Even still you need to use them right. Conserve arrows. Charge at flanks. Runaway before your slaaughtered ect.

That was a really fun one.

I did neither. If you need "proof" then read the full description of the battle in my AAR. There are other screenies so you can see exactly how I did it. I'm sure there are dozens on this site that can match that victory. I am a good player but hardly claiming to be the best.
