View Full Version : Shouldn't this be a draw?

I'm currently playing a campaign as the Seleucids, no battle time limit. Currently at war with the Romans. I took Carthage, and seeing a Scipii army land on the beach just south of the city I took an army out and confront them. Little did I know another army had landed to the west of the city just inside the fow.

The city is now defended only by 3 militia hoplites and one mercenary hoplite. Here's the first odd thing, the army from the west marched to my walls and within the same turn attacked me. They had 3 balistas and to my surprise they also had a ram and a siege tower. I didn't know you can build those in the same turn that the siege started.

So I had this full stack of leg cohorts along with several aux and archers sitting outside the gate. I had move my hoplites to the gate hoping to kill off as many of those romans as possible. But they just sat there, their balistas knocked out a couple of my towers but then they stopped. I sped up the game and watched TV a bit, 20 minutes later nothing happened. I exit the game, and I got a clear defeat. Shouldn't that be a draw if an army just want to sit outside the wall?

Hi SextusTheLewd,

I didn't know you can build those in the same turn that the siege started. That problem is nasty - the AI seems to either cheat, or it is based upon difficulty level. I think it may also be a problem similar to the "AI build sapping for Epic Stone Walls even though the player can't" bug and the "AI sallies multiple times in one turn even though the player is not allowed to" bug which are also rather irritating like the one you have mentioned. I'm very sorry, yet, sadly there is nothing that can be done about it.

Shouldn't that be a draw if an army just want to sit outside the wall?
Sadly, the computer only calculates end battle results as Draws if a siege sally battle ends due to the timer running out. If you quit a battle it, unfortunately, is considered as you surrendering to the enemy, and offers you an automatic defeat which is calculated based upon the numbers of men more than you the enemy has on the field. If they have a huge amount of men more than you then it is a "Clear Defeat", if they have some more men than you then it is an "Average Defeat" if they have less than, equal to or slightly more more men then it is a "Close Defeat". Sorry, yet this is also fixed and there is little you can do about it.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, good luck with your campaign, cheers!

I figure as much, those roman dogs will pay dearly for that. Nothing but dust and ashes will remain once my cataphracts run over them.

That's why I don;t play with a battle timer, and battles that last for ever (literally) when you can't run down enemy militia/archer cav cause they have no ammo, and are still on skirmish mode.
