My Romans seem to be having all sorts of babies. I thought the Roman faction was adoption only?

No..... The Romans had children too, believe it or not.

P.S. Are the Romans the only faction that adopts new family members? I thought all factions could.

???? Where do you get that from? AFAIK no faction has unusual family structure. My Romans always have kids.
EDIT: Carses! The wait-time between posting got me!

No, AFAIK all factions can adopt. I just thought that EB had made the Romani an adoption only faction, by making them unable to have kids.

Maybe it was a different mod, but I thought it was to represent that it wasn't just inherent rule in Rome at the time.

Yea, but if your right up there in the senate you'd think your children would have a quite easier time of being a senator then some guy who managed to kill 5 Gestatae without laughing his behind off.

I recall that an EB member explained once that the Romani get very few births, but are supposed to get lots of adoptions (and MoH's) instead, to represent the more meritocratic nature of Roman political life (compared to dynastic monarchies) and patronage. Having the major political offices largely in the hands of a single family or gens isn't realistic.

To represent a Republic (the most basic definition of 'republic' is a government that does not have dynastic succession), as Rome was, birth rates have been lowered so that more Roman 'family members' are gained through adoption and "man of the hour" events. EB does not and cannot completely eliminate reproductive 'family member' gains. The whole thing is done by adding an invisible trait to all Romans that gives negative fertility bonuses.

Certain traits will cancel out and even add fertility to Roman family members. One noteworthy one is "AVGVSTVS", emporers seem to get extra fertility so that you will have heirs and the adoption system EB seeks to give Romans doesn't destroy your dynasty.

lol the family tree does not represent the meritocracy's of the roman republic

it represents the founding families of Rome during those times
or so its supposed to represent

and your fraction leader is the head of the senate (or king etc. for other civilizations)

but after the founding families, (the people who you start with)

everything else is randomly generated and adoptions are created by the growth of provinces based on if you have available sons or not

the family tree creates your own Dynasty of families

its a shame because it doesn't allow 'tailoring' the family tree to our liking so

no Juli family for yous!

i think adoption can be preprogrammed but I'm not sure

MAA's answer is spot on. The best we can do with our 'no-babies' factions is give them -3 Fertility with hidden traits. This is what happens with romans, but it usually is not enough.

So with the AVGVTVS trait I should try to keep the dynasty, which could mean changing who my faction heir is. Does that mean there is still the former-faction heir trait there was in vanilla?

That's one of the first things I noticed with EB. A lack of a penalty for being a 'former faction heir'. I could be wrong, but I believe they eliminated that part of the game.

Oh, well that is very good then.

That was a very frustrating trait in vanilla because it never gave me a choice about whom I wanted as heir until after the fact.

Taking away, or modifying, ancillaries that increase fertility would certainly help. My guys always seem to have babies.....after I get a 'doctor' or whatever it's called.

I'm having a little problem with my Romans in my current campaign. Not a single candidate for adoption or "man of the hour" so far and ALL the guys who want to marry my oh so many daughters are "dumb and uncharismatic" and between 40 and 50 years old :inquisitive:

oh and btw I'm in the year 210 already.

How many generals do you have and how many cities? Usually the game ends up throwing tons of men at me when I'm low. You could always bribe rebel family members...

Well I have enough generals now lol. My Romani are reproducing like bunnies just got 8 new generals within 2 years now. Just wondered why I never get one for adoption and all the guys who want to marry my 16 year old daughters are over 40 :laugh4:

not that I would need lots of generals now. although one or 2 more wouldn't be toooooo bad. I have 60something cities now so I always have a place for them to go to :egypt: :whip:

You only get "Man of the Hour" and "Candidates for Adoption" when you have less generals than cities. Children that haven't come of age are concidered as a general when the game is concidering this. As for bad marriage candidates, don't turn them all down if you are getting concideribly deep into the game. I have had about a dozen women reach 'above child bearing age' and I have accepted every candidate for marriage since about 240BC.
