Well the legionairres lived primarily off corn, and i remember reading about one campaign, i think it was caesar but am unsure, where the troops were complaining because they only had meat left to eat. so the might warriors of the roman empire had an almost completely vegetarian diet, so i guess it makes sense that the 'show' warriors, the gladiators, would have a similar diet.

The Mediterranean diet in general was pretty heavy on all kinds of vegetables.
