Not sure if this is the best place to post but I'm looking for free or inexpensive software that allows me to create music (not just edit/mix).

Are you looking to compose using MIDI sound sources and multi-track sequencing, or using multi-track audio sound loops? Or both?

There is a wide spectrum of software available, ranging from simple in design and simple to use (some free), to extremely complex and feature-laden (and very expensive). Knowing a bit about your music and technology background, and budget for this, would be useful in answering your question.

Most of my direct experience is with MIDI sound sources and multi-track sequencing, but I've kept abreast of the industry as audio loop recording has become more popular.

This site (the leading magazine on Keyboard technology) is arguably the best single source of information on this subject:

I have no musical talent, no musical equipment and know nothing about any aspect of it :)

I just wondered if there was good software that was free or inexpensive that allowed me to create small pieces of music for mods - not the cheap electronic synth sound but real theme music. It would need to be able to create sounds like an electric piano I guess and provide some basic way of mixing/editing.

p.s. sorry, arbaces ;)
